It's crucial for the director and the audience to have the same understanding of the foundation of the universe, especially in science fiction. However, it feels as if the writer makes up the story as the filmmaking goes along rather than having had a full script before casting. It starts from one logical gap and a small hole in the story. As it rushes toward the ending, the entire story becomes the hole. What exactly is the cloning process like? What is even the purpose of cloning? How is cloning related to peace in the U. S? Where does a clone's memory start? Why are there more than one clone of each individual? The whole movie is like - the director just grabs my arm and starts running, and I run along with him with a head full of unanswered questions and with being unaware why I'm running. Music is the only thing good out of this movie.
Seriously, WHY? Why did Jim Jarmusch decide to make this movie? Is he trying to deliver some message? Is he trying to show some good art and cinema? Why did he pour money and time into making this one film? 'Only Lovers Left Alive' is a collection of dots of literary, artistic, historical, and philosophical phonies. Those dots are not connected with each other to form a story but rather thrown away at some points in the movie randomly without a single thought. I can smell Jim Jarmusch's snobbishness from miles away. I did not expect a valid and strong story arc from him in the first place, but in addition to empty plots, the pace of the movie is freaking slow.
