Cars 3 (2017)
First half not good, second half pretty enjoyable
It's rare to see a movie that gets better as time progresses, generally, in movies, it's the opposite, really strong first act, then it gets downhill from there.
The first act, and kinda the middle of the second one were bland, the build-up from the first act was pretty weak, the villain was not that intimidating, but the movie somehow recovers from that, a very pleasant surprise, the McQueen's relationship with his mentor, for example, and also the character Cruz, their character arcs is what made the movie for me.
But there are problems through the whole movie, not just on the first half or the other, like the humor, it's not good, or how the movies shots feels kinda same-y,
I didn't like watching this, especially since the movie had a bad first impression on me, even though the second half was kinda good, the experience overall wasn't that good.
3 stars out of 5, if you want to watch this, consider watching something like the first 10 minutes of the film, then skipping a bit more than half the movie.
Pokémon Journeys (2019)
Pretty awful
I cringed myself out in the first three episodes, but other than that, it's just bad, don't watch it.
The Adventures of Tintin (2011)
The adventures of Tintin
The adventures of Tintin
There's something so magical about these types of movies, simple adventure/action stories, they're not about deep emotional character conflicts, rather, they're all about being exciting, adventurous, fun, and that's what this movie is about
This movie has a fun "Assassin's Creed Cutscene" look and vibe, if you know what I mean, it's like you're playing a videogame
This is one of the few 2D to 3D adaptations that i really liked, you can't just have the appeal of 2D on 3D animation that easily, so rather, they decided to go for a "adventure movie" type of look instead, with real actors, but with mocap, to keep the character design, the setting, and overall characteristics of the comic brought to the movie, and definitively it was the best decision
Steven Spielberg's direction is easily the movie's strongest characteristic, so many excellent shots and transitions, it contributes a lot to this movie "adventure-ness"
This is my second time watching this movie, and i like it a lot more than first time, and maybe i will love it a lot more on my third watch!
4 stars out of 5, it's a bit unpolished, but definitively a fun movie.
Wish Dragon (2021)
Conflicted but still a bit fun
Don't get me wrong i'm not calling this a illumination type of level of garbage, but it's kinda one of those not so good family animated movies
The story is kinda good, but can get pretty bad at some places
The animation is kinda good, but it kinda feels generic
What frustrates me most is the potential that this movie have been going for, specially if you look at the concept art
and yeah, i'm saying it, it's a dumbed-down Aladdin, sorry, i didn't find to be that good.
Cruella (2021)
Better than i expected
I was hooked the entire story, i love the 'hero goes downward spiral' story, for a movie it's pretty good, but for this current live action Disney trend, it's the best one so far.
Zoom (2006)
A really bad movie
Yes, the movie is pretty bad, but it has some juicy "it's so bad it's good" entertainment value.
So i would recommend it only if you are that type of guy that likes to make fun at bad movies.
Karigurashi no Arietti (2010)
Not really a special movie
Yes, the visuals are amazing and everything, but the story isn't really that engaging, it lacks substance, barely anything happened to the movie at all, it's not a funny story, an emotional one, a fun one, it's just bland, and it doesn't help with the movie's slow pacing
5/10, i would not recommend watching this movie, it's really boring.
Dream Big: Engineering Our World (2017)
Boring
The movie in general was boring, very poor quality, also, what's the deal with those cheap pop songs in the film?
The Mitchells vs the Machines (2021)
Another visual feast by sony!
I must say i was very impressed with this movie, when i saw the trailer, i had little hope for this movie, thought it would be another Illumination level garbage.
Then i was told the director of this movie was the same as Spiderverse, ( also, both movies were made by sony ) you know, the best movie of past decade?! The movie that pushed the boundaries of 3d?
So i was only sure of one thing, even if the story was garbage, even if the pacing dragged the whole thing off, I was sure the visuals would rock, and it did
Let's talk about visuals, i'm going to be brief here, the visual style blew me away, it's nothing like i've seen before, it's on-par with Spiderverse.
Let's talk the story for a moment, remember when everyone said the premise of the movie was conflicted?
Going for a family trip story, plug off your phones, spend time with your family, reject technology or something along the lines.
But then everyone was surprised by the robots invasion, technology going against us! It turned into an action movie, with a kinda apocalyptic theme.
Now.. let's ask the question: can these two themes coexist, and create a compelling story? Yes it can!
The story jusy needs to go for their family story beats, and also the action story beats.
But the highlight of the story would be the characters, the characters were an interesting bit, they had some interesting dynamics, with the most developed being the father and daughter, which were kinda tied with the family vs technology theme , which was their source of conflict.
The movie started because of their conflict, the daughter, representing the tech side, with an obsession for film, got accepted on film school and was soon going to move out.
The father, representing the family side was not happy with that, so he decided to go onto the last family trip together
A nice little touch was the other 2 characters, mom and the little brothers being the bridge to their characters' resolution.
I really liked the characters, and the change they've been gone through, a big plus for me.
At the end of the day, the movies visuals were groundbreaking, and the story was good. With its message not being "reject technology" or "live in the woods" but its more like "technology and family can coexist, and they can even help each other"
The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004)
A classic
We all know this movie, it's a fun movie, it doesn't have a extravagant plot, the main character arc is pretty simple, it's a simple movie, just like the cartoon, but that's what makes it great.
Sure the plot doesn't really make sense, but again, it feels like an long spongebob episode, you can pay little attention to the plot and still enjoy it.
Kid Cosmic (2021)
Great
Fun story and great pacing, it has some ups and downs on quality of episodes, seemingly rushed, but it's much more than it's sum of its parts.
Very excited for the next season.
The Sleepover (2020)
Hard to watch
Horrible, i couldn't keep watching for mere 10 minutes, it's just one of those netflix original garbage movies. Don't watch this
Up (2009)
Great start but the rest doesn't have substance
-- NON SPOILER REVIEW --
I know, people praise the "Married Life" montage a lot, and i do really think it was a great start, but then the movie introduces some uninteresting conflicts and deviates from the main premise, no character gets an interesting conflict that adds to the story, i think Up's villain being the weakest part of the story, so that leaves a film with very little investment on the characters, consequently a movie that feels shallow and unisteresting.
--SPOILERS AHEAD--
My biggest problem with this movie would be the lack of attention to the plot, the movie opens with the main character, an old grumpy man named Carl and her wife on their biggest dream to travel the world, the movie already had some handsome investment put into it, we got that awesome montage of Carl and her wive growing up, marrying. Then she dies, leaving only Carl to fullfill her wife's dream of traveling.
Then we are introduced to the comic relief, a young optimistic kid named Russel, his goals being, to get a scout badge, this is already a good dynamic.
A bit later on to the movie they ended up crashing the baloon's house they were piloting, fortunately they crashed right into were Carl and her wife wished to travel for so long. this is a dang good setup for the second act, and get some nice character exchange.
Unfortunately, this is where the problem becomes apparent, the plot immediately throws all of that out of the window to introduce the animal compaion, a rare bird species,
Then another animal companion, a talking dog, talking to a gadget of course, is introduced for no reason, both of the animals don't really contribute to the plot or character dynamics, they're just there to kill some time i guess...
By this point the movie has gotten very, very boring.
We get to the worst offender of this movie, we learn that those animals actually belong to a guy named Charles, also an old man, who revealed later the antagonist, don't worry, he's the most forgetable part of the movie, Charles is in a mission to get his hands on that rare bird species that conveniently Carl is taking care of.
I should also point out how much the movie already is off track on it's original premise, back to the snoozefest.
Charles invites the group to his ship, on the actual intention on getting that bird.
Carl for some reason accepts the invite, not because he was stranded, because he admires Charles, which is revealed ealier with absolutely no build-up to that moment, that exposition is just shoved into our faces.
Later the group learns that, surprise, surprise, Charles was evil all along, that was supposedly to be treated as an emotional moment but that was so poorly executed i can't tell if it was.
The writers thought, hey, you know what kids love? explosions, fight scenes, chase scenes! why don't we put that into the movie?
And the other writer replies, shouldn't we spent some time for the emotional scenes.. you know, for the plot?
Which the writer replies, what plot?
So that's what we got into the third act, explosions, fight scenes, chase scenes, Charles dies but no one remembers him being in the movie anyways.
We are getting to the end of the movie, so for the last attempt of a cheap emotional scene the group gets into the baloon house and is ready to pilot, but oh no, it's too heavy?
Carl needs to think fast on how to get the house ligther to fly off so he doesn't dies or something, so he ends up getting rid of everything inside his house, you know, sofas, fridges, and even the most precious objects for Carl, that reminds of his wife, look, that scene alone wasn't bad, if you were to show me literally the beggining montage and that scene i would probably think, hey i bet this movie is a real tearjerker!
It isn't, they spent the whole movie wandering around focusing on anything but stuff that would build up to a satisfying finale.
Proof that this movie is really that bad is that i really can't remember some plot events on this movie so i had to look it up on the internet.
So to finish this off, what did we learn? Focus on what's important. Ironic how Carl learns that at the end of the movie, but clearly the writers didn't
You could say that the plot crashed harder than the baloon house eh?
anyways...
i would give this movie 1/10 for the complete lack of effort but i added a star solely for the beggining montage.
2/10 Don't watch it
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
It's as bad as you think it is
Lazy writing, Bad CGI, it's kinda of one of those movies where you can make fun of
Soul (2020)
Goegeous yet very flawed
A quick review on 2020's Pixar film Soul
Warning: a little bit of spoilers ahead,
I'm going to score the art and the story of the film
Art, a straight 10/10 the visuals and the jazz soundtrack are brillant, i love the new york scenery, it really shows how talented the art team are, even though the soul world was pretty boring
Story... 5/10
I've going to give the main reasons i don't like the story.
Some details or elements weren't really needed, specifically 22's arc, it came so out of the blue with little antecipation, some other plot details too could have been easy peezy to erase from the film
The souls world overstayed its welcome, with a big and not really needed lenghty introduction, and worst of all every single scene on the soul world is lackluster compared to every new york scene and thats a big problem
Pixar being the big known trusted family friendly studio that it is, decided to add a cornucopia of jokes but almost everyone falls flat, which is a sign of being rushed.
And my final big issue is that because of all of this, the main's character arc not being reinforced and feeling kinda dilluted, not much attention was paid to his arc and time was either being spent on an unfunny joke or on the a not very relevant soul world plot point
I really wanted to like this movie but this movie wasnt as good as i wished it could be..
The message was brilliant but failled at the execution
If i gave a score for effort it would be 7/10
but on enjoyement 5/10
Over the Moon (2020)
Off for a strong start but very underwhelming
( Big analysis, if you don't want to read everything, skip to the aftermath section )
( Somewhat significant Spoilers Ahead! )
The order of the points I'm going to talk about are as the movie progresses
Let's talk about the first impressions of this movie, because they are impeccable! The opening song at the start felt like a Disney-level song, like you're going to get a story with Disney levels of epic. You get greeted by this kinda Ghibli-esque environment, full of vivid people walking, talking, doing stuff, the Chinese streets, the decorations, the plants, all of this gives you this really cozy feeling, it all felt so down-to-earth but magical at the same time, you know what I mean, even the characters seemed to have solid characterization going on, so in other words it was off for a VERY strong start, The movie barely started, and I'm already attached to the Ordinary World ( Ordinary World as in the Hero's journey format )
A bit later on, almost at the end of the act one, as much as it hurts to say, we can see a bit of the character derailment starting to show, but first, some context. Fei Fei, the main character, has this internal character conflict, you see, her mom died, and her father is getting remarried, she strongly believes in Chang'e story, it's also her favorite story her mom used to tell her, in a nutshell, Chang'e, the moon goddess, was forever separated by her lover, and she patiently awaits him at the moon, to maybe someday, enjoy eternity with her lover, emphasis on "awaits", Fei Fei believes that her father doesn't believe in the story anymore, that her mom is being forgotten and being put aside.
Now that we've gotten the context, let's go back again to the "a bit of character derailment" part, Fei Fei's character starts to get somewhat over-the-top from here, when a character starts to derail, it damages the Suspension of Disbelief, since her character was established, when she starts to act off-character, that feels very off, so that isn't ideal, Fei Fei starts to act whiny and angry at her future mom, almost at cartoon levels of exaggerated, I couldn't help but laugh when she was acting all angry. I don't really have a problem with the other characters so far, they don't feel unnatural as the main character did.
It may be seen as a nitpick, but after the initial 10 minutes I couldn't connect with the character anymore, and that's true for almost every character in my opinion, they were somewhat 1 dimensional.
Later, we see a montage where Fei Fei builds a rocket to the moon, it feels a bit cartoonish, but it doesn't feel out of place, as we learn later on that she couldn't fly all the way to the moon by only her efforts, her rockets stops midway though the travel and the rocket begins to fall, then it's brought by two lions, and that serves as an entry point for the magical aspect of the movie, which leads to my next point of criticism of the film.
We get introduced to the Unknown World ( as, again, in the Hero's journey template ) it's a bright, colorful, geometric world, but in comparison, it feels very lackluster to the Chinese streets that we were earlier on, it feels a lot more empty, and lifeless, there's no people walking there, talking, doing anything whatsoever, aside from a few background characters here and there it feels a lot less interesting than the Ordinary World. Aside from the stage, that had Chang'e first song, that felt exciting, vibrant, and magical, there's nothing much left to appreciate here.
Let's get to my other point, Chang'e character, in first sight, she seems like a character with a lot of potential, the moon goddess, with the twist she is a pop star, that sings to the audience she herself created, she is this big larger-than-life diva, and kinda bratty, personality. Ironically, her bratty and kinda annoying attitude she has is pretty similar to the main character. Her two main songs were a bop too, it kinda starts off to a good start.
But then the house of cards starts to fall. Whenever there's an emotional scene involving her, she starts to act in such manner, that makes her unlikable, she acts all angry or whiny at small things, her character feels more like just a jerk at this point. Her one-dimensional personality doesn't do a favor either, as one-dimensional characters are extremely detrimental, specially if it's one of the main characters.
So doing a recap on everything so far. We get an impressive first impression, but the two most important characters, Fei Fei, and Chang'e, are unlikable characters, the unknown world, or better saying, the colorful geometric world, is lackluster, and by the first 20 minutes my Suspension of Disbelief was gone.
In the midpoint, we notice two things, first, we learn about the sidekick, he doesn't do much in the story. And the second thing that we learn, the second half of the Second Act, has a lot of filler, the sidekick wasn't much of a useful addition to the story, the whole chase sequence thing, the rabbit getting superpowers thing, and even Fei Fei's stepbrother which I've been ignoring the whole review, were wastes of time. The movie is 90 minutes, but little to nothing has happened in the whole movie, and the filler problem becomes more apparent when Fei Fei's and Chang'e character arc were rushed.
In act 3, the movie is a big mess, the movie wasted so much time in filler, that the stakes weren't even built. The third act is supposed to be this big climatic moment, filled with tension, this movie barely did that, and as a result, the movie felt very weak, add the rushed character arcs, and the movie felt like a random, weak, and boring experience, such a bummer because, this movie had potential to be a great movie,
Aftermath:
So, at the end of the day, what's my opinion on this movie? It had huge potential, but in the end, it felt lackluster, and weak.
What would be my biggest compliment? The art, the animation, the scenery, they had some good songs, and great imagery, it's almost kind of magical!, it's not perfect, but it's dang good.
What would be my biggest points of critique? The first one would be that the movie kept breaking its rules. Characters that were initially established as one way, starts to act as the other.
As the second point: the movie wanders around with no goal in mind, it had a clear beginning, and the end, but the dots didn't connect together, feeling very unsatisfactory
1 star and a half out of 5.
