Stratton Castle: The Story of Jessie Golden Heart (2019)
Why is this movie so bad?
From the description of this movie it sounded right up my alley. The scenery and the music are beautiful. But the acting is so bad. I've never taken a drama class, but I think I could act better than this. It's so sad because it looks like a great story but I cannot finish it. Would somebody with some talent, please remake this? I cannot fathom why anyone thought this movie was worth releasing. I need to find out if this is from a book or short story or whatever so that I can go read what it's really about and at least understand and complete the story. I'm no critic, but this one is about as poorly acted as anything I have seen.
Many Beautiful Things (2015)
More beautiful than you can imagine!
My Bible study group and I read a brief biography of Lillias Trotter, and so when I saw this documentary, I had to watch it, and it far exceeded any expectations! Everything was beautiful...... No, beyond beautiful. The scenery, and the way the documentary was shot; the music; the voice actors, and the dramatization actors - all were excellent. Mostly it was so inspirational, learning so much more about Lilias' life and sacrifices for her faith, and the spread of the gospel. Her artwork is so lush and gorgeous and the way they combined some live action images with the artwork was amazing. It was also so awesome to learn about the woman who has basically preserved her life and story for future generations - Myriam, Rockness, and the fact that she has made it her life's work to get the artwork and the story of the LiliasT rotter before the public. I thank God for her and I'm so thankful to have had this gorgeous documentary made available so that more people can know. If you have seen this, please tell others, and if you haven't, watch it NOW!
All Creatures Great & Small (2020)
Is there a 12 or 15 rating?
What can I say about this awesome show? Not only is it totally clean and I would feel comfortable recommending it to anybody, but I love all these real characters, who have captured my heart. I reread all the four books in the Herriot series because of watching this. Always a good thing. Nicolas Ralph is amazing as Harriet as is everyone in the major and minor roles. I can only hope this keeps going for season after season. I am a big lover of British drama, but this one is near the top. Right up there with Downton Abbey! There is tenderness, humor, romance, suspense, family, and nothing offensive. That is an amazing description for a show these days. More more more, please!
Hotel Portofino (2022)
What's with the bad reviews?
OK, so it's not Downton Abbey and it's not Julian Fellowes. As noted it is absolutely beautiful, as is the beautiful lead, McElhone. I think the storylines are interesting and the rotating characters keep it more interesting. I don't understand the hate. And why people are rating it 8 and then saying it's boring. An 8 is pretty good l, and well worth watching. If you look at the individual episodes, they are all rated above seven. I recommend it for those that want a little Escapism and a little history, and a little romance. I'm enjoying the history because it's a time period that I knew nothing about, after World War I, but well before World War II.
Emily (2022)
A really interesting combination......
I've read quite a few biographies of all the Brontës, and seen many versions of their works on film, as well as read them all, so I was prepared to not like this, based on the fact that it is not a pure biopic. However, I really liked the way they combined Emily's life with that of the story from Wuthering Heights. It made for a unique perspective. I hope it inspires people to want to go and read more of their real lives and works. The only part I didn't like was that The sisters didn't seem to love and support one another and their literary works the way I'm sure they did. They were all that they had out there in Haworth and they hung together! The scenery was beautiful and the music was a little weird at first, but I grew to like it. I highly recommend this and that you form your own opinion.
Persuasion (2022)
Fresh and new
I wasn't even going to watch this because I had read so many scathing reviews, but I'm so glad I didn't listen to them. Dakota Johnson was just adorable and I loved the asides to the audience - gave just the right amount of whimsy and seemed very Austenian to me. The updates to the language didn't bother me. I could've done without a few of the 21st-century type comments but that's just me. I loved the music, I loved the two leads and overall I'm so glad that this fresh take on a 250 year old classic was made. And to those of you that are too stuffy to give it a chance, It will be your loss. I'm just glad it wasn't mine! :-)
