Ripley (2024)
Ripley: A Compelling Blend of Mystery, Suspense, and Dark Humor
When the credits roll, you're left wondering about Tom's mysterious past, and it's frustrating not being able to trust anything he says. But that's easy to overlook because Ripley's stunning visuals and flawless acting overshadow these flaws. It's not just one of the greatest Highsmith adaptations ever, but Ripley stands as one of Netflix's top shows. While some episodes may feel slow with lengthy dialogue and quiet moments, the pacing picks up with intense scenes that inject humor into the mix. Overall, Ripley delivers moments of violent release amidst the tension, making it a must-watch.....
The Scent of Sin (2023)
A pretentious load of garbage
This movie was terrible. Even though I'm a fan of Ahmed Rubel and Tariq Anam Khan, this one was just strange and not enjoyable. It felt like they were trying too hard to be artistic, but it just came off as pretentious. The dialogue was hard to follow, and there was hardly any plot or a satisfying ending. I don't understand how they even got funding for this garbage. It seems like they were just trying to make trash look fancy. Or I Must Be Missing Something. I'm curious about why some people might actually enjoy or see artistic value in this film, despite its flaws. I want to understand what they find redeeming about it, even though I personally think it's terrible.
Coup de chance (2023)
Craving for Woody Allen's Humor Despite Language Barrier
I really miss the typical humor of Woody Allen because of the language barrier. When I watch his movies, it's not just about comedy; it's like you can almost picture Woody Allen standing there, finding the humor in human mistakes and laughing along with us. "Coup de Chance" isn't a huge departure from his usual style, but it's more lively and enjoyable than his recent films. The cast is sharp and energetic, showing that he can direct well in French. Everyone looks like they're having a great time in this light-hearted comedy that unexpectedly takes a darker turn. Woody Allen tells a funny story in a simple way, mixing detective-style drama with city romance. The outcome is a clever and amusing spoof created in a laid-back manner.
Kaathal - The Core (2023)
Solid 7 and One for The Great Mammootty
Kaathal, tells a simple story about divorce and finding freedom, similar to Jeo Baby's earlier film, 'The Great Indian Kitchen.' While the film could have shown more about the characters visually, it still manages to tell a heartwarming story. There are two important moments of making up between Matthew and his father and Omana and Matthew. Mammootty and Jyothika do a great job as the main actors, especially Mammootty, who, at 72, impresses with his interesting roles. In short, "Kaathal - The Core" is a touching 114-minute movie about a married couple's journey to patch things up, leaving you feeling hopeful in the end.
Jaha Bolibo Shotto Bolibo (2024)
Jaha Bolibo Shotto Bolibo: A Disappointing Dive into Legal Drama"
The series has a gripping plot, but the screenplay feels outdated for the current time, lacking authenticity in portraying judicial procedures, defense lawyers, and police dynamics. While Mimi Chakraborty and Tota Roy Chowdhury deliver good performances, they can't salvage the overall superficiality. Director Chandrasish Ray, known for the impressive "Nirontor," disappoints in this series. It falls short of its potential to explore the complexities of the law and order system, corruption, and political alliances, opting instead for clichés reminiscent of Hindi TV serials. A wasted opportunity that could have been a brilliant exploration of good cop-bad cop dynamics.
Chhotolok (2023)
Chhotolok: This Year's Best and an All-Time Bengali Web-Series Gem
The series maintains an engaging pace and storytelling that keeps viewers hooked. The attention to detail, including the music and the overall presentation of scenes with outstanding color grading and cinematography, is simply brilliant. The casting and acting are generally strong, with Priyanka delivering a compelling performance. However, Gaurav's portrayal falls slightly short in comparison. The true standout in the main cast is Damini Beni Bose, who plays SI Sabitri Mandal. She steals the show with her brilliant performance.
Director Indranil Roychowdhury's series delves into the complexities of society, where the distinctions between upper middle-class and lower middle-class households are deeply ingrained. The term "Chhotolok" takes on multiple meanings in this narrative. It can refer to those with a narrow-minded mentality, but it also relates to individuals from the lower social strata. The series uncovers layers of thrill, mystery, and hidden truths within the society's corners. Who is really called small people? Those who show their small mentality or those who live in the lower class in the language of society? Or..? No matter how many adjectives Chhotalok has, director Indranil Roychowdhury has given a unique interpretation.
The Hunt for Veerappan (2023)
Unmasking Veerappan: The Enigmatic Anti-Hero's Life Journey
Netflix's gripping four-part documentary 'The Hunt for Veerappan' delves into the life of the notorious and mysterious forest brigand. Veerappan, known for being a bandit, activist, poacher, smuggler, and murderer, leads a gang responsible for numerous casualties among police and civilians. The visually stunning portrayal explores his world of Chandankath smuggling and horrifying ivory trade, while skillfully presenting key moments like the kidnapping of Kannada Megastar Rajkumar. However, the series lacks clarity on the reasons behind Veerappan's early criminal activity and avoids depicting his background. Some viewers may also notice a toned-down representation of police brutality and find the ending puzzling. Despite these points, the expertly crafted docu-series captivates and leaves a lasting impact on the audience.
Kohrra (2023)
A Captivating Journey Through Punjab's Unseen Depths
Kohrra is a captivating web series set in Punjab, which takes you on a mesmerizing journey through its unique landscape. What sets this show apart is its ability to evoke deep emotions, blend dark humor seamlessly, and maintain a gripping tension across all six episodes. The climax is masterfully crafted, leaving a lasting impact, as do the end credits. The show's brilliance would have shone through regardless of the state it was set in. However, it's evident that time constraints affected the storytelling, resulting in a spine-chilling yet overwhelming finale. Despite this, Kohrra manages to convey a multitude of messages, leaving the audience in a state of shock and contemplation. If you crave thought-provoking dramas with complex characters and compelling storylines, I highly recommend watching Kohrra. Its stellar cast, captivating narrative, and breathtaking setting make it one of the most engrossing web series of recent times, guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.
I Like Movies (2022)
Film lovers are sick people
Watching this film, I couldn't help but forgive its shortcomings. It was clearly made on a shoestring budget, with unremarkable locations and occasionally amateurish performances. However, the story's universal appeal overshadowed these flaws. As a film lover and someone who struggles with socializing, I found myself deeply moved and able to relate. The film tackles the theme of moving on and growing up, a familiar territory in cinema. Despite lacking groundbreaking elements, it exudes a nostalgic charm that captivates. The writing, direction, and acting are surprisingly strong, which adds to its merit.
Writer Padmabhushan (2023)
A Heartwarming Family Film with Room for Improvement
Writer Padmabhushan is a family-friendly film with a relatable plot and engaging moments. While the message and drama are satisfying, they come too late to truly make an impact. Despite its occasional lack of logic, the film's heart is in the right place. Suhas and Rohini deliver outstanding performances, adding depth to the story's intricate details. To be more interesting and entertaining, the first half could have moved at a quicker pace. If you enjoy slice-of-life dramedies, give Writer Padmabhushan a shot, but keep your expectations in check. Be aware that the slow-paced beginning may bore some viewers.
La nuit du 12 (2022)
A Gripping Tale of Justice and Heartbreak
The Night of the 12th is a gripping drama that captivates viewers and may even lead to a resolution of the case, just like Memories of Murder. It tells a true-based story of a mindless act of violence that has far-reaching and devastating consequences for many people. This powerful tale sticks with you in a way that few crime stories can. With its strong message against violence towards women and the unfairness of the justice system, this thriller cuts even deeper. Beneath its captivating portrayal of determined police work lies a heartfelt plea for a better system. The Night Of The 12th will leave audiences emotionally drained and haunted by its chilling conclusion.
Mercules (2023)
A Failed Attempt to Portray a Failed Society
Extrajudicial killings have become a burning topic in Bangladesh lately. They prove that the law and justice system of a supposedly free country has utterly failed. This series delves into the dark connection between extrajudicial killings and sensitive issues like rape. Inspired by true events, it unveils the complexities of real-life victims, the tragic injustice prevailing in society, the enigma of serial killers, and the ruthless political game exploiting it all. Sadly, beyond this compelling backdrop, the series disappoints in every aspect. Poor editing, miscasting, weak storytelling, and dreadful dialogue ruin Mercules, making it a huge letdown. Despite delivering Sabila Noor's second-best performance, the rest of the show's flaws drag her down.
Good Night (2023)
A Delightfully Refreshing Rom-Com Journey
"Good Night" is an awesome rom-com that hooks you with its fresh storyline, superb acting, and hilarious comedy. This movie is a perfect blend of heartwarming drama and laugh-out-loud moments that keep you engaged throughout. It's a well-crafted flick that just feels good to watch because it's so relatable. Although there are a few minor drawbacks in the writing, like the writer playing it safe to avoid being overly dramatic and filmy, they don't really bother you while watching. Overall, "Good Night" is a delightful and entertaining film that will leave you with a big smile on your face. A Simple and Refreshing Feel-Good Drama.
IB 71 (2023)
A Missed Opportunity in Cinematic Chaos
IB71 falls short of its potential due to lackluster writing, which fails to captivate viewers. The screenplay's shortcomings prevent it from reaching its full impact, resulting in a frustrating viewing experience. The first half, in particular, lacks direction and fails to engage audiences effectively. The film serves as a painful reminder of the consequences when lazy writing, uninspiring performances, and amateurish direction collide. Despite its intriguing premise, IB71 struggles to maintain consistency throughout, leaving audiences yearning for a swift conclusion to this cinematic disaster.
Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai (2023)
Silenced voices demand to be heard. Some stories must be told.
Apoorv Singh Karki's direction in the film is highly commendable. He skillfully utilizes the impactful script and dialogues, adding the necessary drama to the narrative. Karki's ability to enhance the impact of simple scenes, such as Baba's arrest or his interaction with followers outside the court, is praiseworthy. However, the film primarily focuses on the central character in the courtroom drama, leaving little room to explore the stories surrounding him. While the pressure on the survivor to prove allegations of sexual misconduct is hinted at, it remains unexplored. Nevertheless, Karki effectively balances emotions of hope and despair, creating a realistic film set in authentic courtrooms and streets. Ultimately, some stories simply need to be told, regardless of the need for brilliant execution.
Gunehgaar (2022)
A good mix of theatre as well as the essence of the camera
"Gunehgaar" is a gripping drama delving into crime and retribution. With notable actors Gajraj Rao, Sumeet Vyas, and Shweta Basu Prasad, the story unravels how a long-forgotten incident shapes the intertwined lives of three individuals, impacting their present and future. In live theater, captivating visuals, props, dialogues, and music keep the audience engaged. However, teleplays, especially suspense dramas, are more challenging because if the unfolding drama isn't interesting or engaging, people might switch it off and watch something else online. The play's excellence hinges on the performers' skill in conveying its essence, making it a captivating experience not to be missed.
Hatyapuri (2022)
Feluda fails again: a snooze-inducing time capsule of boredom.
Paran Banerjee and Subhasish Mukherjee bring a captivating presence to the screen, while Indronil's portrayal of Feluda isn't bad either. However, the rest of the major cast fails to fit their roles and deliver subpar performances. The film's color tone and storytelling style feel outdated and uninteresting. Another issue is that although Sandip tries to modernize Feluda, the script lacks any significant improvements. This is crucial because in a period piece, Feluda's behavior and actions should align with the character's essence, creating a harmonious blend. Whenever a contemporary twist is introduced, the story should reflect some modernity as well.
Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum (2023)
Just add the formula and stir, voila, a 'good' film!
Recent Malayalam films: Feel-good tale, stellar performances, stunning unrelated landscapes, predictable tunes, culturally rooted events, and dialogue. But alas, it's a snooze fest! While these elements make it watchable, the frustration mounts. "Just watchable" isn't enough; filmmakers must go beyond. Give the audience something exceptional, memorable, and captivating. Break the formula, explore new horizons, and leave us awestruck. Don't settle for generic endings; surprise us, challenge us, and make us ponder. Malayalam cinema has the potential for greatness; let's raise the bar and deliver films that truly resonate.
Rajneeti (2023)
Political Intrigue and Thrills: A Surprisingly Enjoyable Grounded Watch
The story follows Rashi, a young girl recovering from a coma after a serious car accident. She can't remember her past, but as she gets better, she uncovers the hidden family secrets and the true motives of those close to her. This series consists of two parallel narratives, one focusing on the political background and the other on Rashi's personal quest for the truth, occasionally raising surprising moments. The series keeps you wondering throughout, revealing information little by little. When everything finally becomes clear at the end, it's a satisfying and surprising twist that makes you crave more episodes or another season. The show has some gaps, but the way it's presented is amazing and captures people's hearts. It's well filmed and the music fits perfectly, making every episode engaging and the editing sharp. Overall, it's a cleverly crafted series!.
School of Lies (2023)
Are Kids Okay? Dive into this NOT SO Engaging Series.
The series may seem beautiful on the surface, but there is deep agony underneath. You don't even need to look closely to see the hellish nature of the characters' lives. In School of Lies, every character is well-developed, and their guilt is palpable. They are not just empty vessels for the plot; we can feel that they have existed in this world for a long time, even beyond what the camera shows. The episodes are of decent length, but it takes time to settle in, and there are too many unnecessary side stories that make it difficult to understand the main plot. While the show is well-written, the multitude of characters and their hidden dark pasts or mysterious connections can be confusing and distract the audience's focus.
Scoop (2023)
Hansal Mehta delivers A Gripping Tale That Demands Attention
The 6-episode show captures our attention with its gripping story and sheds light on the harsh reality of seeking the truth. Scoop's compelling plot has everything to make us curious, even if it's not what we desire, it's something we can't overlook. The creators adds entertainment value by taking creative liberties, but disappointingly lacks clear explanations for characters' motivations, leaving viewers to interpret subtly, making a stronger, more definitive ending preferable. Nevertheless, Scoop an essential story that must be shared, reminding the masses that disregarding inconvenient truths is unpleasant to their own narrative.
Asur: Welcome to Your Dark Side (2020)
Lack of Detail, Weak Character Development, and Excessive Tech Focus
The excessive use of terms like artificial intelligence, software, and hacking messed up the storyline. Although it's still watchable, the attention to detail is completely missing. There's a part in Asur 2 that feels out of place, where victims are given remotes with red and blue buttons to choose from, which is hard to believe and doesn't connect well with the rest of the show. The characters don't develop much, and the show lacks the charm of mythological tales. Another issue is that sometimes things don't make sense, like when the stock market crashes, the government and the investigative team's reaction seems dull and too easy. The series becomes depressing with too much focus on technology talk and spending too much time in front of computer screens. While the misuse of technology is explained well, I missed the excitement of watching DJ, Nikhil, and others solving mysteries and facing challenges themselves.
Le otto montagne (2022)
An Enthralling Exploration of Lifelong Brotherly Love
The Eight Mountains is a stunning and profound drama that captures the essence of natural beauty. It portrays a unique and heartfelt portrayal of lifelong brotherly love. Unlike typical films about male friendship, it delves into the depths of their connection without relying on clichéd camaraderie. The pacing is impeccable, allowing for a thorough exploration of the events that shape individuals and the consequences of their decisions. With breathtaking scenery and masterful cinematography, this film takes its time to showcase the profound impact of life's experiences. The Eight Mountains is a mesmerizing piece that will leave you enthralled and deeply moved.
Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery (2023)
Bringing social ridicule to life with gentle humor, I wish they made more movies like this.
Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery, a well cooked social satire, cleverly intertwines the disappearance of two jackfruits with a captivating narrative that reveals broader societal issues. With a perfect balance of humor and a leisurely pace, the film skillfully highlights complex caste dynamics and gender biases without being preachy. While it could have delved deeper into these themes, Kathal beautifully captures the allure of rural life and its simple joys. The cast delivers captivating performances, infused with witty banter, while the police force is portrayed with raw authenticity. Kathal is a good-watch, offering 120 minutes of clean cinematic experience!
Ini Utharam (2022)
Textbook Example of How Not to Make a Thriller Film
The movie's charm fades in the second half as a poorly executed twist unfolds and fails to evoke any emotional response. Despite its lack of emotional depth, it also falls short in delivering an engaging and thrilling drama. It ruins the excitement that was building up, with its clichéd and sometimes illogical scenes. The film lacks originality and fails to provide a fresh experience for viewers who enjoy thrillers. It simply follows the usual formula of contemporary thrillers in terms of technique, character development, storyline, dialogues, camera work, and background music. There are no distinguishing features that make it stand out from other films in this genre. Ultimately, it becomes a film only for those who appreciate crime movies without expecting any innovative elements.
