Its not a bad movie, but when you call it part 2 it needs to uphold certain standards. Like consistency for one. The hotel is completely different. In the first movie they mention there only being 4 rooms multiple times, but the first scene in this the guests are put in room 6...and the room is more of a rustic cabin look than the sleazy motel look of the first one. And the people who are trying to survive are far less likeable than in the first one. Id almost go as far as to say i dont like them. The bright side of this one was that it focused more on the killers than the victims, the bummer of that is its not the same people that we got to see in the first one (except for one of them. The one who was always behind the mask and really did nothing worth being the one who got brought back for the prequel. Not that he isnt great in this, its just that Ethan Embry and the other guy were the people we would actually care about seeing again).

simply terrific

When i put this on i was expecting to just have something ok to watch for a couple hours. At first that is exactly what i was watching. But as the movie progresses and the characters open up it starts pulling you in, and when everything starts really happening its just a great movie. Dont go into this expecting a big flashy movie with people you will recognize. Go into it expecting a story driven movie about friendships both new and old that gives you a very satisfying ending. It is a bit of a crawl when it comes to pacing at the start, but by the end you will be exactly where you didn't expect to be with this movie...the edge of your seat. The acting is great, and despite a few shots that linger a tad too long i have no complaints.

I checked this out because i like zombie movies and im the weirdo who love bottle episodes of shows or movies like the Phone Booth where it is just a person stuck in a single location for most of the movie. Its not the best movie ive ever seen, but its funny, decently acted, good story and its not a long movie so by the time the schtick of being stuck in the stall starts to wear thin its pretty much over. My only complaints are that it was hard to hear Heather for a good chunk of the movie, i messed with my sound settings and everything and eventually was stuck have the volume blasting to hear her better. Thank goodness for subtitles. My other complaint is a spoiler so dont read ahead if you dont want to.
Spoiler below so at the end WC finds the girl he thinks hed been talking too (and its been established hes crushing on her) throughout the movie in the elevator and at first hes really happy but then quickly realizes she been bit and is one of the girls whos been bullying Heather and then he sends her to go get eaten by zombies but before she goes he stops her (pauses) and says merry Christmas and she goes. I think it would have been better had he realized she was Heather's bully and sent her to her death then stops her (like hes having second thoughts about sending her to her death) but that is when he sees the bite on her leg and decides its not as bad then he says merry Christmas and sends her away. I just like that he would decide to kill her for Heather before he knew she was already dead, its a better act of vindication for Heather had he got real dark and tried to use the zombie take over as an excuse to kill someone. My one tiny complaint to add is that Heather totally could have fit in that crawlspace...it was almost the width of an average hallway.

I was excited for this because it was a continuation of the story from the first one. I really enjoyed the actress who played Jennifer, and though the second one had better kills the first had the better heroine (in my opinion at least). This started out pretty promising with Jennifer living a new life under a new name and profession to distance herself as much as possible from the trauma she is still actively haunted by. Then it gets into what you think would be this great story where shes going vigilante and starts taking out the attackers of her rape survivor group. But nope that story totally devolves into Jennifer just going off the rails and starting to target fairly innocent men (one who seems genuinely good, and one who seems scummy but we are told by another character is totally harmless). Removed were the over the top gruesome justice fueled kills, to be replaced by boring psycho person kills. You can tell this was made by someone different as it is totally disjointed from what the other 2 are. The only saving grace of this movie was the performances, especially Gabriel Hogan, Michelle Hurd, and the actors who played Oscar and Cassie...without the cast this may have been totally unwatchable i really wonder if they saw a script before signing on to make this.
Vampires vs. the Bronx
(2020)
better than expected
28 October 2024
This felt like an American "Attack the Block". The kids were younger and it was quite as adult a movie but it definitely had similar vibes. The main kids were pretty impressive actors for their age, and the story was way more involved than i expected. Ive been dying to show my nephews Attack the Block but they are not old enough for weed comedies yet so this will definitely be a good way of gaging how much theyd like that type of movie. It was very fun and definitely appropriate for pretty much all ages. I didn't realize any bad language in it, the blood is very minimal, and the vampire deaths are done in the typical "dusting" or burning away style so even the most squeamish should be ok. As an adult i would say it is probably not the best actual movie but it is in no way bad. All in all this was a very fun movie that i would definitely recommend.
The Strangers: Chapter 1
(2024)
disappointed but not bad
9 October 2024
I liked this more than the first but now as much as the second. First ill get my complaints out of the way. I was confused on whether this is a sequel or a prequel. Its called Chapter 1 but is the third in the series, and the killers are credited as the doubles of the original killer trio that died in part 2. The reason this is confusing is because they use the same masks, clothes, weapons and all the same gimmicks the originals did...including "is Tamara here?" and the asnwer to "why are you doing this?". And how could they possibly know any of that about mysterious killers who all died? My other complaint was that they more or less just replicated the plot from the original but instead of a couple thats on the rocks, its a very happy couple. The plot replication is also a positive though, because i think it is a better version of it. I like the grander scale of the second one and the fact that it was a family being hunted and not just a couple, so i was a little let down after how much i liked that one. But if this actually gets a sequel (like the "to be continued" promises) perhaps it will take this one to the next level. Another positive it that unlike the original i was actually rooting for these people to live and im excited to see how the story continues.
It's What's Inside
(2024)
pretty good
8 October 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this movie was pretty good. The acting was better than expected for this type of movie. The twists were left and right so at any given point you may be pretty confused as to who you are actually watching talk to each other. There is definitely potential here for sequels but they wouldn't be necessary. I think if i have any issue with this movie it's that part of the fun for the audience (and the actors) with this type of movie is seeing the characters being portrayed by different people. But like i said they want you to be confused throughout the movie so you dont know who is who and that robs the movie of the joy of seeing the actors have fun playing different parts...and they weirdly only switch into bodies of the same gender so there is none of the humor of gender bending characters. Though i imagine this was to avoid handling gender issues in a potentially problematic way. It was very weird to have a movie where there wasnt a single lgbtq character or even an exploration of a characters gender/sexuality in a modern movie. My other problem was minor but none of the characters really seem to mourn the loss of their supposed close friends. Once the 2 characters die that incite all the craziness not one character seems saddened by the loss. At first there is shock, but immediately after they are discussing how to handle the situation for the rest of the movie. They even go as far as to say its been over an hour and a half since the deaths occured...which means they chose to skip over them showing emotion instead of spending 30 seconds on showing them cry or hug because their friends just died. I know its a minor issue and the only thing that brought it to my attention was them showing the bride crying at the end of the movie, because it was in that moment i remembered that 2 of the major characters in this movie died horribly in front of the other 6.
Salem's Lot

pretty damn good
4 October 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I really liked this. Its Stephen King so its definitely got a good story (at least if you're a fan of his work). The acting is pretty impressive as well. Long been a William Sadler fan and only wish he'd been in more. Im also very quickly becoming a fan of Lewis Pullman, as ive recently seen him in quite a few things doing amazing work (Bad Times at the El Royale is superb). And the kid who played Mark is now my top pick for a live action Miles Morales. Kid actors dont often impress me, but he definitely did as he nailed this role. Mark is a bad ass and i love any movie or story where the little kid is totally the one who saves the day (also a fan of when pets are the saviors like in Hills Have Eyes...but thats besides the point). Overall id say it was terrific, if i had to offer any criticism its that i wish it was a little longer. I know the original was at least 4 hours long so stuff was definitely left out, and with as good as this already was i wonder if it could have been better with more left in. But definitely check it out if you like suspense, vampires, Stephen King, or just like kids getting to kick ass.
I Saw the TV Glow
(2024)
disappointing
22 September 2024
I understand the message of this movie, but it still disappointed the hell out of me. The trailer had me thinking it was something else entirely and i would have been ok with the movie if it wasn't so boring. Justice Smith is usually such a great charismatic actor, but we watch him zombie walk through this movie the whole time. The performer that played Maddy i only know from one other thing, and they were much better in that (Bill&Ted)...the only part where i enjoyed their acting was during the first sleepover when you see Maddy interact with a friend much more animated than in the rest of the movie. I kept wanting to turn it off and then something would actually happen and then id think it was the turning point where everything id suffered through before it would make sense. But no just more of the same watching people be depressed and then it just ends. The really sad part is that there is a really terrific sci-fi story in here but its just used as a metaphor for gender identity or chosing to live a lie. And even the metaphor wouldn't have felt as disappointing with better directing (sorry to the director but i know what your leads are capable of).
One last thing that i know is a silly criticism but has to be pointed out. There is absolutely no world (even a dream one) where someone goes from the little kid in the beginning to being Justice Smith in 2 years.

The Penguin
(2024)
i wanted to hate this
20 September 2024
I thought Colin Farrell was great as Penguin in the Batman, but i have never understood casting a skinny good looking fit actor and putting him in massive prosthesis and a fat suit...especially when i kind of think he looks like some other famous actors who would also have been just as good. I also really didn't get why this spinoff was coming, and to be honest am just tired of Batman reboots. But after episode 1 i will confirm this show to be amazing (so far). I only watched it know it was a necessary to watch bridge between the first and second movies, and my surprise enjoyment of Farrell in the role in the first one. But i wasn't expecting to like it nearly this much. The acting is terrific, the writing is superb, and it surpised me with some quick twists. The biggest thing that i liked was the fact that there was so much more color in this than in the Batman. I noticed it almost immediately, as it was a huge complaint for me about the movie (it felt like watching it through a Zack Snyder lense). I hope this keeps being as good as it goes along because i genuinely cant wait until the next episode.
The Batman
(2022)
better on the second go
20 September 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Im not sure if it was just years of anticipation or i saw it too long after hearing a ton of hype about it or just just Batman fatigue but on my first watch of this movie i thought it was just ok an ok Batman movie with great acting and not as much action as id anticipated. On my second watch (after giving it quite a bit of time) i enjoyed it much more. Even from the announcement of his casting i knew Robert Pattinson would be a near perfect Batman (and Bruce Wayne...sorry Christian Bale fans but the Batman voice was awful). I loved that this movie focused a lot on him being a detective, but would have liked a bit more of his investigations and watching him try to figure things out. My only real criticisms are the color scheme of this movie...it felt like watching a Snyder movie. They took the Riddler who is known for being brightly dressed and put him in a dark olive puffer coat and duct tape mask. It almost made me miss Schumachers neons and black lights. The other is seeing Batman 2 years in and still kind of bumbling through certain things. Batman is far too meticulous a character too have been active in the field that long and still be making mistakes (like with the flight suit). My final criticism is just that im tired of the same villains in Batman movies. This one just re-did the ones weve already seen in live action multiple times.
Civil War
(I) (2024)
not what i expected, but great
14 September 2024
I never saw a trailer for this movie. All i knew was it was about a modern civil war in the US, and that Jesse Plemons was in it. I did feel a bit blindsinded by the fact that it follows journalists, and that Jesse Plemons was actually only in it for 5 minutes (deep into the movie too). I expected more of an action movie as well. With that being said i really enjoyed this movie. When there was action it was pretty epic, and it felt very grounded in a way that a lot of war and action movies fail to pull off or ignore altogether. The acting is impeccable, i particularly enjoyed the actors who played Joel and Sammy. The actress who played Jessie is not only stunningly beautiful, but extremely talented as well. We see this actress pull off almost every emotion with an natural ease that makes you feel like shes just an actual person living these events. My only real criticism is that it is a movie with a very dour main character who more or less mopes through the movie, and that makes it a bit hard to get through the first part of the film before the group hits the road and everything really kicks off. The ending also felt a bit abrupt for me, but i feel it may be leaving things open for potential sequels or whatever may comes next...if not though, i dont really know what else i would've expected. All in all this was a truly great production that i probably wouldn't have watched without misleading myself into thinking it would be something else based on the little information i had beforehand. Just wish Nick Offerman had been in it longer.
This may not be the fault of the actual production, but i have never seen a movie with worse subtitles in my life. I watch everything with subtitles on and have for like 20 years. Im hearing abled but do have slight issues that they subtitles help with (or sometimes they just help when you didn't understand what someone said). Every now and then i notice a mess up here and there when watching things. Its usually 1 or 2 per movie. But this one had wild inaccuracies left and right. At one point they said the word "suburban" loud and clear and literally point at one, and the subtitles read "those two men". I can understand a couple, because most of the time they are fairly benign mistakes. But when i see something as bad as this it feels worth noting, because i cant imagine how confusing watching this movie would be to someone who is actually hearing impaired and relies on the subtitles to follow whats going on. It really feels like a deplorable mistake to make in such a major movie. It really felt like whoever did the subtitles either dropped the ball or straight up didn't care...this had to pass through an editor right?

3:10 to Yuma
(2007)
damn near perfect
1 September 2024
Just rewatched this for the first time since its release and cant believe ive waited so long in between viewings. It is full of amazing performers doing their absolute best. Ben Foster and Logan Lerman are particularl stand outs for me. I grew up watching Foster and am just such a fan of his versatility as an actor, and Lerman has grown up on screen doing terrific work (and even more since...check out Hunters) and this movie is no exception. My dad was a huge western fan and i saw a ton of them as a kid including the original version of this and i truly think this is one of the few remakes that may be better than the original. This is a must watch for any fan of westerns or any of the performers in this film.

Warning: Spoilers
I watched this because i loved Annie Murphy on Schitts Creek, and thought the premise was interesting. But i found myself sticking around for the friendship that is growing between Allison and Patty. The chemistry these 2 actresses have on screen together is really compelling to watch. I love the switching between sitcom and drama styles, its a really interesting way of showing how the 2 characters perceive the world they live in and themselves. It would be interesting if at some point they have a baby and you get their relationship from that perspective...it could be a cartoon. But no matter what im excited to see where it goes in season 2.
Cabin Fever
(2016)
better than the original?
18 August 2024
I really liked the one that came out in 02 but i probably havent seen it in 20 years so when i stumbled onto this one thinking it was a reboot or continuation or something like the new Jeepers Creepers or Wrong Turn (both of which i liked a little bit more than the original movies) i decided to check it out. Sadly it took me way too long to realize it was a remake, and a pretty decent one at that. Some aspects of this i really liked more than the original, and others felt a bit over the top in unnecessary ways....but such is the way of horror flicks. Overall i liked it a lot and will probably give it a rewatch at some point. I do find it super ridiculous to remake a movie so soon after the original came out, but i am happy with the result.
pretty good, not as good as the first
18 July 2024
I enjoyed this one a lot, but my main issue with it is my main issue with the comic it's based on and that is that it spends too much time with characters i dont really care about. Their stories are definitely interesting and hugely important to the story but i really dont get why so much of Psycho Pirates entire life is explored just to explain his motivation as a villain, it felt like overkill. I also was bummed that the resolution for the biggest cliff hanger of the first movie is being kept for the third installment (at least i hope it will be there), especially since it involves the Flash who drove the first movies plot and was only mentioned in this one maybe twice. Other than that i really enjoyed the movie. So far this trilogy has been some of the best of the rebooted DCAU especially since it is building towards being rebooted again. Because i have not liked nearly enough of this new one, and the old one was incredibly good (for the most part). I also love any DC project that includes Matt Ryan as John Constantine...there will never be a better Constantine than him.

Warning: Spoilers
I am a huge Steve Carell and stop motion animation but held out on watching this because i knew it would be somewhat sad. I watched it today and really ended up loving it. I didn't realize how many great people were in it besides Carell. Ive always loved movies about bad ass women and i believe this falls into that category for me in a lot of ways. Im also somewhat socially awkward and found Marks interactions with other people hilarious in a very relatable way. My only negatives with this movie is that i cant tell if it is stop motion, fully cgi, or a bad mix of both because there were times where it would look super realistic and other times i felt like i was watching a cartoon. The other issue i have is that the movie leans so heavily on Mark making it to court to give a statement so the people who hurt him are more severely punished, but then at the end of the movie they never say what kind of sentence they got...i mean they couldn't throw in one damn line or even just tag it on at the end with all the stuff they literally print on screen for you to read about the real events. Now i have to go do research or take another reviewers advice and just watch the documentary. But even with those gripes this is definitely a great movie and a showcase of how talented Steve Carell is, because he really is playing multiple characters in this movie.
digging it ao far

Warning: Spoilers
I have really been liking this show a lot so far. The acting is really good and i love seeing actors from other properties i love now in the Star Wars universe. When the action hits its pretty fast paced and very well done. My only complaints so far is that they have children who look nothing alike playing the child versions of characters that are supposed to be such identical twins they are played by the same actress. It would have been cool if they just showed them for a few quick scenes here and there but so far episode 3 seems to be just a flashback to them as kids...which is a really weird move for a show to do on the 3 episode. We are still getting acquainted to the adults after the first 2 and now boom were with a whole new group of actors. This is made worse by them ending the last episode making you think this one would feature a Wookie Jedi. But other than that mile long complaint i am still totally engaged in this show and can see it having Andor potential if it can keep us on the right track.
Saw X
(2023)
one of the best
25 May 2024
Ive long been a fan of this series and while this is definitely the slowest moving entry in this series i do believe it stands among the best of them. It went back to Jigsaw being the actual Jigsaw of John Kramer. We get to see much more of him than we have in prior entries too, and other than some spectacular twists Tobin Bell has always been the besr part of these movies. This one got away from targeting members of law enforcement which is something i felt some of the later entries leaned too heavily on because after Jigsaw died Hoffman was really just targeting people who were on to him which got repetitive. This one however is John taking more personal action with stakes that relate to him and feels more like the original where hes going after someone who wronged him. Yes it takes a while to get to it but the hard to watch gore and terrifyingly fun traps/games that make this franchise tic are all present and just as entertaining to watch. I really hope they can find a way to keep working stories like this into the existing timeline of the movies because we have been missing stuff like this in the horror genre since the Saw movies went away.
Atlas
(I) (2024)
better than expected.
25 May 2024
Ive never been a big Jennifer Lopez fan, but i love scifi, mechs, and quite a few of the other actors in this movie (especially Abraham Popoola who ive been seeing in everything lately without even doing so on purpose...if you liked him i suggest Extraordinary on hulu hes terrific in that as well) so i decided to check this out. I really ended up enjoying every minute once the plot really got rolling despite thinking the role of Atlas may have been better served with a less popular actor (i think Eiza Gonzalez would have been great, or if you really want her to feel like an out of place analyst America Ferera would have been amazing). By the end of the movie though id totally forgotten my thoughts on the casting and was just lost in a really good movie that kept me in the action the whole time. Id totally recommend this to anyone who loves scifi or if you like me also love a movie with a badass female lead character.
Dune: Part Two
(2024)
what the hell? watch the 80s Dune its better
21 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The first one was ok but was so drawn out, boring, and had the most disappointing ending ever that i only watched this one because i wanted to reslove the story (because i knew the first movie was only part of the book, so it was in itself incomplete). I thought well maybe the second one would make sitting through the first one worth it. But this movie is a mess. Where as the first one was super drawn out and boring, this one appears to have huge time jumps with no explanation as to what the hell happened in the time we didn't see. We go from him on some journey test through the desert immediately to him leading an assault on enemy troops. He becomes this mythic warrior for his people but never see the enemy learn anything about him, but all of a sudden in one seen where we as an audience have no idea they even know this character exists Bautistas character starts name dropping him left and right. Then there's the fact that half the movie is subtitled. Which wouldn't be an issues if the subtitles were a different color/contrast than 90% of the background they appear in front of so you cant actually tell what the hell is happening at times...and had i not waited to watch this at home where i can constantly rewind to make sure im not missing anything in this completely convoluted plot, a task that it feels like everyone behind the scenes of this movie was trying to make impossible. Because honestly if they didn't do everything they could to distract you from the dumb story thats been done a hundred thousand times (dating back to the bible) people wouldnt be flocking in droves to drop their money on this monstrosity. And trust me folks if you want to see where the story goes from here go on Wikipedia and read the breakdowns, it just gets more convoluted and way worse and so much more dumb. The only reason im giving it as high a rating as i did is because it is a well made movie, despite the distinct lack of any color that made me feel like i was watching a Snyder movie and dont say it fits the story because the far superior 80s Dune had color and managed to get all 7 hours of story these 2 movies took and got it done in less than the run time of the first one of these.
The Wrath of Becky
(2023)
Great movie
9 March 2024
I really loved the first movie and this one was pretty great as well. It didn't feel as tense as the first, but the characters in this one were a bit more rounded out and real in this. Sean William Scott was incredibly good in this and I enjoyed seeing him do a role that wasn't comedy...much like Kevin James did in the first movie. Lulu Wilson is terrific in this one as well and I really hope a third film is in the works where we can see her taking down the names on the list (hopefully we get a montage of her whacky kills...and many of them) and finally find out what the deal with the key is. I've always loved movies with bad ass female leads and I hope someday Becky Hooper will be as synonymous as Ellen Ripley, Buffy Summers, or Sarah Connor.
Bad Trip
(2021)
I wanted to like this
26 February 2024
I like all the actors in this movie and really wanted to like it and had I realized what it was I probably wouldn't have watched it. I either want a prank movie or a movie with a plot i dont want both in one it just doesn't usually work for me. Maybe if i were on a lot of heavy drugs or i was under 15 id have enjoyed it more but honestly the only part of the movie i liked was the credits when it showed how some of the bits were done and peoples reactions to finding out it was all a prank. Other than that id say there is very little redeeming value to this movie...at least in my opinion. If you like the people in this watch almost anything else they are in...and if you like pranks watch Jackass or Scare Tactics or anything else similar to those. If you liked Bad Grandpa however youll probably love this.
Office Invasion
(2022)
Low budget, but terrific for what it is
20 February 2024
Ive had this movie in my Netflix queue since it was added and finally watched it tonight and was blown away with how much i enjoyed it. That was mainly due to the charm and chemistry the main cast members had. That being said dont go into this movie expecting a high budget laugh a minute movie and you will probably enjoy it. The comedy isnt for everyone and ranges from very over the top gross out moments to very dry awkward moments. The aliens are actually a very brief part of the movie (as most of it is basically a buddy heist comedy in the vein of Office Space) but once again because of how charming the cast was and the plot lines up until then hardly made you miss them and honestly helps you forget that is even a plot point until their appearance later in the film. I dont necessarily think this movie is a 10 out of 10 but i do think it deserves way better than the scores being given to it by people who clearly just dont enjoy this type of movie so im doing my part to offset that imbalance.
Fear Street: Part One - 1994
(2021)
Good movie, but dark (literally)
19 February 2024
I really liked this movie. It was a lot more adult than i was expecting from an RL Stein story and im very excited to watch the rest of the story unfold in the next two chapters. My only issue with the movie was the lack of lighting, when it was dark it was too dark. At first i thought it was my tv and kept changing settings and turned up the brightness but i eventually realized it was a creative decision. I know its a scary movie but ive never seen one quite so dark. Even with that though i definitely recommend watching this if you're a fan of slasher movies. It really felt like a throwback to old school horror where a lot of the gore is implied and not seen overtly.
