The Menendez Brothers (2024)
Worth your time
In my mind there are three criminals in this story: Dad and Mom Menendez and the crooked judge. Its a painful, tragic story, but it was well done, and I believe it is a story that needed to be told. There are plenty of documentaries but this one - in my mind - is important. I watched the dramatization, and then I read a book about the brothers; but of the three this was the most honest and the most compelling. I am grateful that the story is being retold and that it is being told to a more sympathetic, understanding audience. There are plenty of films you could watch. I hope you will take time to watch this one. It is well worth your time.
Monsters (2022)
The Menendez Brothers
So this series started out amazing. After several episodes I gave it 10 out of 10. I couldn't take my eyes off of it. But something changed. The story began to drag with protracted unnecessary dialogues and monologues. It became confusing, and after a while irritating. The last episode was the worst. I won't spoil it, but I will say that watching (and listening to) the prosecutor drove me mad. Was I supposed to feel that way? I don't know. I don't know what the producer was up to... it was all very artistic and creative, but I would have liked something based more in fact than fantasy. I love TV series based on real life, but what a disappointment. The 6/10 is for the first episodes which were (and remain) outstanding. As for Dahmer? Well made but sooo dark!
Sprint (2024)
Outstanding series
This was such a compelling watch! I have seen a number of sports documentaries but this was one of my favorites. I started my first episode thinking I would watch a few minutes and ended up finishing the entire series in a single day.
This series does a good job of taking you behind the scenes and giving you a glimpse into the lives and training of the world's best sprinters. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the various male and female athletes. At first some in particular do not seem very likeable, but by the end of the series I found myself cheering for sprinters I initially disliked.
I hope there are more seasons to come.
BlacKkKlansman (2018)
Slowww...
I went in with high expectations and wow what a disappointment. I couldn't even finish. I think that one speech may have been the longest speech in any movie to this date - and with the artistic close up of faces it was wierd not compelling. I don't like these movies that try to be funny and important. Usually they end up being neither. Rotten Tomatoes rates this one as fresh. I think they mean it's different. It is that - but it isn't good, not entertaining if like me that's why you watch movies. Good actors, interesting concept, funny moments, but lost me. I like something that keeps my attention. This is the kind of film you watch in school because you must. Don't bother.
Reacher (2022)
Dull and not very believable
Often IMDB gets it right. This time, however, the high rating completely baffles me. I enjoyed the Reacher movie - the first one - I thought some of the books were decent, but this series is something else. It isn't realistic, it isnt all that well made, and it isn't very entertaining. The character who plays Jack Reacher is not likeable nor is he believable. I lost interest quickly though I tried very hard to stick it out.
Servant (2019)
Odd but entertaining
Generally a show needs to have a point, but for me Servant is an exception. Maybe it does have a point though I haven't figured it out yet. No matter. Somehow every episode is massively entertaining even if bizarre. I don't know of a show like. So strange but plenty of fun and worth watching.
Defending Jacob (2020)
Excellent until the end
I loved everything about the show except the last 10 minutes or so. Like many other viewers I was dissatisfied with the ending. Actually I thought it was brilliantly acted and one of the more realistic shows I have seen. It gripped me from start to finish... and like other members of the family I couldn't help binge watching until the end.
But what a dissatisfying disappointing ending. And who survives a crash like that?
Still worth seeing... and either way it makes you think. Yes Jacob did it, yes the father was in denial, and yes the mom lost it. But as a parent it made me really think - and I get why they decided to end it as they did. It's meant to generate discussion and designed to provoke. Which it did.
The Newsroom (2012)
Loved it in spite of it
Almost everything this series stands for I am against... but I loved it in spite of myself. I believe in objective journalism not this, I believe the leftist agenda is dangerous, and I despise wokeism... still this show was thoroughly enjoyable and it made me think.
Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond - Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton (2017)
Boring & Disturbing
I'm not sure how exactly to review this movie. I love documentaries, but this failed on so many levels. There is nothing here to celebrate. It centers on a manic self-indulgent badly behaved Carrey... and that's about it. I came away wondering why. What was the point?
Don't waste your time.
Severance (2022)
Brilliant!
I have never written a review before, but after seeing this show I had to submit something. This is easily one of the best shows (if not the best) I have ever seen. It is brilliant, thought-provoking, and - like 1984 - important... so much here to think about!
But it was also fun, funny and addictive. I couldn't stop until the season was over. Compelling stuff. And the acting on all sides was terrific.
Ben Stiller is quickly becoming one of the best director/producers out there.
