After a bank robbery, ex-Confederate soldiers disguise themselves in Union military uniforms and declare martial law in a small town. They convince the townspeople to put their valuables in the bank's safe. Matt Dillon finds them to deliver justice.

Cody is well liked in Dodge and he has plans to build a home and marry his fiancé, Rose. When a stranger comes to town and befriends them both, Cody's life is suddenly torn apart.

Slim is shot by fugitive Joel Greevy and left for dead in the hills during a manhunt. Jess backtracks and catches Greevy who is riding Slim's horse into Laramie. However, Greevy will not disclose where Slim is unless Jess releases him from jail.

Marshal Dave Prescott cleans up the town of Warburg but is later killed. Special agent Jim Hardie arrives four weeks later and discovers that nothing has been done to solve the murder. He is determined to solve it himself.

The Dolan brothers cause trouble for Jeff Mossman and his son, Pete, by continuing to put their cattle on Mossman's land. After Pete is attacked, Jeff goes after the Dolans and is shot by one of them. Matt Dillon gets involved.

Three bank robbers come to the McCain Ranch and force Lucas into helping them rob the North Fork Bank. One robber stays behind to guard Mark while the other two take Lucas to town. They threaten to kill Mark, unless Lucas cooperates with the gunmen.

While in Santa Rita, the Virginian runs into an old girlfriend now accused of murdering her boyfriend. Eager to help the woman, the Virginian enlists the help of Judge Garth. The odds are not in her favor, as the deceased's father wants revenge.

When a bounty hunter comes to Medicine Bow looking for a fugitive, he learns the name of the criminal is on a letter in a bank vault. Trampas worries that he might be the man the bounty hunter has come to bring in.

Doc finds an old alcoholic named Dan on the side of the road. Doc decides to take him in and feed him. Dan is given a second chance and is offered a job on Lem's farm, but runs into problems with Lem's son, who is later found murdered.

Slim and Jess travel to Joe Belden's ranch to buy horses. On the way, they meet three women traveling with mustangers. Slim and Jess find out that they're responsible for stealing Belden's horses and decide to go after them.

A Wells Fargo stagecoach is traveling with two passengers on board, a gypsy named Zita Lopez and an older sick man. Two men stop the stage and kidnap the man. Jim Hardie investigates the missing man and later discovers he may be an outlaw.

Wells Fargo assigns special agent Jim Hardie to guard Michelle Bovarde, traveling to Baton Rouge with her jewels and securities. Her grandfather, Bertram La Tour, gave her a dowry that is worth $200,000. Hardie is unaware of the real circumstances.

Three drovers realize that the coming of railroads will soon end their livelihood in the cattle business as cross-country trail drives are drying up. One of the drovers, Will Parmalee, finds trouble with his old friend Marshal Matt Dillon.

Jim Hardie and his foreman Jeb Gaine are busy moving onto their recently purchased ranch. However, Wells Fargo summons Jim back to help locate plates used for counterfeit bonds. Hardie learns that Confederate soldiers have stolen them.

A group of cattle rustlers want to keep Amos McKee's cattle from going to sale at all costs, including placing a sick calf in the herd to spread a deadly disease. Marshal Matt Dillon joins the cattle drive to keep the peace and the herd safe.
