More than 10 million students in our nation’s elementary, middle and high schools process and perceive the world differently from their peers, known as being neurodivergent. To thrive academically, emotionally and socially, these children often require tailored interventions and support. Some of these can come from the design of schools and classrooms. We partnered with Chicago Public Schools' Edison Park Elementary to create a new single-room sensory space for diverse student needs and divergent development. The school transformed what was an empty room into a dynamic space with three distinct clusters around gross motor skills, sensory activation and calming. Learn more about this sensory space: https://lnkd.in/gwT7UJqM

Congratulations to our Research Director Felix Kabo on the publication of a paper on surgical control time estimation variability. Accurately estimating this time can help with optimizing care, creating operating room efficiency and more. We are proud of Felix and his collaborators for continuing research into this important topic. https://lnkd.in/gQHDg-Ce

Our paper on surgical control time (SCT) estimation variability is finally out! We used data from the operating room at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center to examine whether #military #surgeons varied in SCT accuracy by surgical specialty. It's always great working with collaborators like Christopher Stucky, PhD, RN, CNOR, CSSM, NEA-BC, FAORN, FAAN, Marla De Jong, Sherita House, Chandler Moser, and Donald Kimbler, CRNA, PhD. And a huge thanks to the CCI Research Foundation for funding this work! https://lnkd.in/gk5YUbhY

We are proud to celebration National Hispanic/Latine Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. It’s a focused time for us to honor the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors are descendants of Spanish-speaking regions across Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America. This year's theme for the celebration is Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together. CannonDesign celebrates the resilience and richness of these cultures, including the intricacies and intersectionality of this dynamic community, including within our firm.

With school back in session, many students are realizing how the built environment of college campuses can have a profound effect on their mental health. Crises don’t wait to happen in a clinical space — for these students, they often happen elsewhere on campus. While recent shifts support the prioritization and centralization of health and wellness resource hubs, access can be limited by location, stigma, and so much more. Join our Stephanie Vito, AIA, ACHA and Marisa Nemcik, AIA NCARB WELL AP for a free webinar on converging mental health and student life design strategies on next Thursday, September 19. They will illustrate ways an ecosystem of well-being can permeate campus' in-between spaces and shift the conversation from mental health treatment to prevention. 💡 There's still time to register here: https://lnkd.in/gcXXVmF7
