A new study by HOK, ARC | Advanced Research Clusters and the University of the West of Scotland found that scientific researchers are more neurodivergent than the general population, necessitating more inclusive and thoughtful laboratory design. The study included survey responses from 241 lab workers from Europe and the UK. Nearly half of respondents identified as neurodivergent, and more than 25% identified as autistic. These results suggest lab employees have far greater neurodivergence than the general population. Yet traditional lab design—known for being sterile, loud and cluttered—can be particularly distracting for neurodiverse individuals with specialized sensory needs. In addition to the survey, the study included a design workshop in which lab workers shared their challenges in the scientific workplace. The workshop yielded multiple design suggestions for making labs more inclusive and productive for both neurodivergent and neurotypical employees. What does it take to design a modern multipurpose arena so it fits a complicated site plan, drives community engagement, supports a main sports tenant and, oh yeah, adheres to challenging funding models? HOK's Bill Johnson, FAIA, offers insights in a lively and honest Q&A with Flames Nation about the design evolution of Calgary's Scotia Place. "When the price of these buildings continued to get more and more expensive, the buildings had to take on a more multipurpose program because you really can’t justify the cost of the venues for just a single tenant," says Bill. "The problem with doing anything multipurpose is there’s an initial first cost to that. It’s not as simple. It’s not as straightforward. For a long time, owners were reluctant to spend the money to plan in flexibility and resiliency into the projects, but now they’re listening to us. They’re really doing it." We love seeing Dezeen's coverage of Mutual of Omaha's new headquarters! The 44-story building, designed by Pickard Chilton with interiors by HOK, will be the tallest in Nebraska and surrounding states. The dynamic office tower—now under construction—will feature flexible workspaces, six levels of amenities, and an immersive experience center highlighting Mutual of Omaha's history and philanthropic work. "One of the most notable aspects of the design is the variety on each floor," HOK Director of Interiors Betsy Graham, told Dezeen. "From phone and meeting rooms to break areas, we've carved out opportunities that meet employees where they are—creating a responsive, people-first environment that reflects the spirit of their work." The New Salt Lake City International Airport is the first new hub airport built in the U.S. in the 21st century. The HOK-designed airport includes a 909,000-sq.-ft. terminal, two new, dual-sided concourses and a 3,600-vehicle parking garage. The innovative design elevates the traveler experience and reflects Utah’s stunning landscapes. The Canyon, a wavy sculptural piece on the walls of the terminal atrium, mimics Utah’s dramatic red-rock canyons, alpine peaks and moving water. Local restaurants in the terminal highlight Utah’s dining scene. With the airport’s location in an active seismic zone and extreme weather depending on the time of year, creating a resilient design was important. HOK’s structural engineering team ensured the buildings meet rigorous earthquake safety standards. The project achieved LEED Gold certification, with sustainable design strategies including high-performance glazing, daylighting, energy-efficient systems, and an efficient configuration of terminal and gate locations that reduces fuel use and aircraft emissions. Learn more from HOK’s Matthew Needham and Claire Moore about the project in ASCE’s Civil Engineering magazine: https://lnkd.in/gPbss9P4 📸 Bruce Damonte Photography
