As we expand our fully autonomous ride-hailing service to new cities, ensuring first responders feel confident and prepared around our vehicles is a top priority. That’s why we work closely with first responders in the communities we operate in before our first public riders get access to our service. To date, we’ve conducted in-person training for 35,000+ first responders across the U.S. Our partnership with Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) provides a complimentary online safety training course designed specifically for first responders and has trained hundreds more. While our First Responder Outreach team will continue leading hands-on, in-person trainings with the public safety community, this self-paced online program adds an accessible layer of safety education that covers: 🤖 How Waymo AVs recognize and respond to emergency operations. 🛠️ Detailed instructions for approaching and interacting with the vehicle. 🔋 Critical safety and extrication procedures, including how to disconnect the battery. Not all miles are created equal. A highway commute on a Tuesday morning carries a different risk profile than driving through downtown nightlife at 2:00 AM on a Sunday. Our new peer-reviewed research introduces granular human safety benchmarks that account for time and location to evaluate AV performance accurately. The data shows that despite operating disproportionately more at night, the Waymo fleet achieved significantly lower crash rates compared to human benchmarks across every single time window analyzed. Every Waymo vehicle on the road can also spot potholes. 🚗 Our pilot program with Waze puts that to work — routing real-time road condition data from our autonomous fleet directly to city and state Departments of Transportation, so potholes get flagged faster and fixed sooner. We’re kicking things off in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta, with more cities coming soon.

We’ve updated our safety performance data, now covering more than 220M fully autonomous miles through March 2026. What stands out most in this update is consistency. Despite expanding into increasingly complex environments like airports and new cities, the Waymo Driver’s safety performance remains exceptionally robust. As Waymo now drives more than 4M miles every week, that translates to an estimated 1 fewer serious-injury-or-worse crash every eight days, as well as 6 fewer airbag-deployment crashes and 13 fewer crashes that cause any kinds of injuries each week. Today we’re announcing our latest fleet partnership with Element Fleet Management to continue to optimize our commercial autonomous operations at scale. This partnership will provide end-to-end fleet management and operational services for our fleet. We’ll begin this collaboration with an initial deployment in San Diego, with plans to expand into additional markets over time as we continue to grow. We are building a scalable foundation for long-term growth, including an ecosystem of AV industry partners, and are excited to safely and efficiently bring the Waymo Driver to even more riders.
