With Global Accessibility Awareness Day approaching, it’s a good time to ask whether AI is truly usable for everyone, and whether site accessibility is keeping up with how fast AI is evolving.
Because if people can’t understand, navigate, or perceive what’s happening, even the smartest AI won’t help.
So here are a few accessibility gaps that keep showing up in AI interfaces, and are simple to get right 👇
↳ Clarity wins
In AI interfaces, if it’s unclear what prompt to write or what the system expects, users will guess - and that quickly leads to frustration. Users should always easily understand what to do and what input is expected. Clear titles, labels, and short instructions can make all the difference.
↳ Contrast matters
Placeholder text is often styled too lightly to serve as a hint or example, making it hard for some users to see. Use at least 4.5:1 contrast for placeholder or hint text, and a clearly visible 3:1 contrast border for the chat input field.
↳ Say what’s happening
Content updates dynamically, but these changes are not always exposed to screen readers.Make system status clear, and announce all states to screen readers (start, in progress, done).
↳ Name every action
If a button doesn’t have a clear name, it effectively doesn’t exist for screen readers.Provide clear and descriptive accessible names for all interactive elements.
↳ Keyboard is not optional
For users who rely on a keyboard only, the experience can quickly become slow, frustrating, or even impossible. Ensure full keyboard access, efficient navigation (including shortcuts and skips), clear focus, and controls to pause or stop actions.
The opportunity is huge, AI can remove barriers, but only if we design it that way.
