Shiju Mathew reposted thisShiju Mathew reposted thisHundreds of millions of people have tried ChatGPT, but most of them haven’t been back. Every big company has done a pilot, but far fewer are in deployment. Some of this is just a matter of time. But LLMs might also be a trap: they look like products and they look magic, but they aren’t. Maybe we have to go through the slow, boring hunt for product-market fit after all. https://lnkd.in/eA38j2CQ

Shiju Mathew reposted thisShiju Mathew reposted thisToday is a big day for open source. Allen Institute for AI (AI2) has released OLMo, a series of LLMs that are truly open source: open source code, open source data, open source weights, and Apache 2.0 open-source license. The models are very competitive in quality compared to their similarly-sized counterparts. Read the model info card, it contains so many details: https://lnkd.in/e54qYEBf Read the paper, it contains even more details: https://lnkd.in/e4Hqs7Y5 This is how you release models.

Shiju Mathew reposted thisTransformers definitely deserve a lot of credit for the AI revolution happening right now. But hey, do you remember the word2vec paper? Shiju Mathew reposted thisShiju Mathew reposted thisToday at Google DeepMind we’re introducing Graph Networks for Materials Exploration (GNoME) - a computational tool that has already led to the discovery of 2.2 million new crystals. Crystals are essential materials to our everyday lives, from solar cells to computer chips. Given that roughly 28,000 stable materials were discovered in the last decade, this new discovery is equivalent to nearly 800 years of knowledge! #GNoME was trained using a technique called ‘active learning’ and helps to predict the stability of the materials, and therefore pinpoint the most usable ones for real-world applications. The work also represents a leap forward in efficiency for this type of model - this could have a significant impact on how much compute is required to discover a new material. We believe scaling up materials discovery breakthroughs like this could help us tackle some of the major challenges of the 21st century - like finding cleaner forms of producing electricity. Read in our blog post about what this research could mean for the future of materials science: https://lnkd.in/e93maAXiMillions of new materials discovered with deep learningMillions of new materials discovered with deep learning

Leading technology and AI strategy for a vertically integrated global retailer — 13 countries, 800+ stores, and a China-for-China build I'm proud of — was a privilege. Grateful to the team, the leadership, and the board for the trust to build. This moment also coincides with the successful exit of Mila Health, an AI healthcare startup I founded in 2023 — a milestone that caps a 30-year run across banking, retail, digital, cloud, and healthcare. Through every chapter, the constant has been the same: technology strategy is business strategy, and business, at its core, is about customer obsession and relationship. For now, I'm taking time to decompress, recharge, and be present with the people who matter most — before the next adventure.

Shiju Mathew liked thisShiju Mathew liked thisWild: Anthropic just told investors it expects a second straight quarter of adjusted operating profit, with gross margins above 80%. The catch? That 80% basically ignores the AI 😳 According to FT, Anthropic’s gross margins are now >80% before accounting for revenue shared with distribution partners, including Amazon, and the cost of training its models. Adjusted profit also excludes stock compensation. In other words, Anthropic basically defines profitability as revenue before cost of goods sold and operating expenses 🙃 To be clear, the growth is real: → Q2 revenue topped $11.5B. → July’s annualized run rate passed $65B. And Claude may genuinely have software-like margins when serving today’s models. But by that logic, my newsletter has 100% gross margins - before Substack, Stripe, and the government take their cut. Technically defensible? Perhaps. But it’s definitely not a complete economic picture. On the other hand, when you want to IPO at a $2 trillion valuation, even accounting needs some good prompt engineering... Welcome to vibe accounting. You will work closely with me and Varun Bahl to push AI Overviews forward on Google .com, where billions of people start figuring out what to buy. The ambition is easy to say and hard to do: give everyone an expert shopper on their side. One that knows what they're looking for, has sharp judgment about what's actually good, and constantly works to earn their trust. At global scale. I'm looking for someone who's excited about commerce and has real instincts for consumer products. The work is product craft: finding the actual problem inside a messy one, saying it in a sentence, picking the few levers that matter, and iterating fast with high ownership. Check out the application link in the thread below or feel free to reach out directly. 👇

Shiju Mathew liked thisShiju Mathew liked thisWe’ve closed our first ESOP buyback, funded entirely from our own cash flows. 57% of eligible employees chose to participate - they realised returns of over 80% on vested options, with the largest payouts equal to roughly 30% of annual compensation! I believe ESOPs have a credibility problem in Indian startups. They get offered at hiring as a large number on an offer letter, and then for most people they sit as paper for years, waiting on a round or an exit with no set date. The employee carries the risk, waits on someone else's timeline, and often leaves before any of it turns into cash. We could run this buyback because of how the business runs. Our in-house AI platform handles the operational work of freight forwarding - documentation, reconciliation, invoice validation, exception handling - and the team verifies output rather than producing it from scratch. That's what keeps us profitable in a traditional industry with margins this thin. The team took a bet on us when they joined. This is us paying some of that back, without waiting on a fundraise or an exit to do it. #ESOP #Startups #Logistics #AI #Xhipment

Shiju Mathew liked thisShiju Mathew liked thisI have done many dumb things in my life but also a few smartthings. The smartest thing I did was to put my health front and center as the highest priority in my life when I turned 57. I was morbidly obese and was very sedentary in my lifestyle, My father and grandfather had both died before they reached the age of 60. My grandfather had two strokes and was quadriplegic. One my uncle and a cousin also had strokes. Handwriting was on the wall. I took a full year off to retool my body. I signed on with barbara blackburn as my trainer. I partnered with my brother in law Mark Holt to start doing hikes and biking. I lost 70 pounds of weight (before the days of GLP drugs) in 2002 and have stayed fit ever since. I still workout with Barbara. I turned 81 today. I am in a top shape physically and mentally and still drive and live independently. I want to live to be 102 to celebrate India's 100th independence anniversary.

4 days of Shreyas Doshi's Product Sense course cost almost double of my 4 years of engineering. Was it worth it? 1. It gave me the much needed realisation that the the ceiling is very very high on many skills in Product Management. Before the course - I was probably getting too comfortable as I got closer to the local maxima on a bunch of product skills. 2. The content itself is was designed to build conviction & kickstart your learning on a handful of pointed skills - with enough resources to keep going back to, as you work on honing them long term. Building conviction to go deeper is hard and I'm grateful for that. 3. Beyond the content, the course is beautifully structured to take you on a journey to discover, understand and validate these concepts very naturally. No jargon, no theoretical frameworks, and nothing held back in calling a spade a spade wherever needed. Would I recommend it? For Sr. PM and above - If you are willing to put in the effort to grow in your craft, by practising the material everyday, you will unlock tremendous value from the course.

Everyone talks about products, roadmaps, features, and metrics. But some of the most critical work of a Product Manager happens behind the scenes: * Resolving unspoken conflicts in stakeholder meetings * Spotting potential blockers before they stall a launch * Mentoring team members through tough decisions * Anticipating competitor moves and adjusting strategy proactively * Building processes that quietly make everything run smoother This invisible work doesn’t show up on dashboards or in OKRs but without it, teams misalign, launches falter, and products lose their edge. PMs are part strategist, part diplomat, part mentor; the work beneath the surface is what truly drives success. #ProductManagement #ProductStrategy #Leadership #InvisibleWork #PMLife #StakeholderManagement #BusinessStrategy #Competition #Teamwork #ProductLeadership

Excited to share the launch of Zepto Pay Later — a Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) experience built natively within the Zepto app. One of the areas we’ve been focused on is reducing friction in the checkout journey. While Zepto has pushed the boundaries on delivery speed, the opportunity was to make the payment experience just as seamless. With Zepto Pay Later, users can now complete their purchases with a single tap — no OTPs and without leaving the app — with up to ₹10,000 in credit available instantly. From a platform perspective, this involved coordinating across payments infrastructure, risk controls, credit partner integrations, and the checkout experience to ensure the flow remains both seamless for users and robust from a system standpoint. We’ve started with a controlled pilot for a small cohort of users and will gradually expand it across the user base soon. Great to see strong cross-team collaboration come together to ship this. 🚀Zepto

Some of the most impactful builders in India don’t get talked about enough. Before AI, before LLMs, before “deep-tech” became a buzzword — Manu Kumar Jain quietly built one of the most iconic consumer tech stories India has ever seen. I had the opportunity to observe leadership up close during the early Xiaomi India days, when the brand was built from absolute scratch in a market dominated by Korean giants with decades of brand power. What stood out wasn’t just speed or scale. It was clarity. • Building India’s first truly digital-first Smartphone Brand • Cracking online distribution when offline was king • Scaling trust before scaling revenue • Turning execution into the biggest moat • Growing from zero to a ~$10B business with 100M+ customers Xiaomi India didn’t just sell smartphones. It changed how India bought technology. And today, watching Manu Kumar Jain shape India’s AI future at G42 — from data centers and GPU cloud to indigenous models like Nanda (Hindi LLM) — feels like a full-circle moment. Different decade. Different technology. Same playbook. Think long-term. Build from first principles. Scale with discipline. Create ecosystems, not just products. A lot of what we apply today while building Lino Bud comes from lessons learned under leadership like this. Hidden gem. Massive impact. India is better off because of builders like Manu Kumar Jain.
