Switching between platforms should be easy and seamless, which is why Android 17 has a ground-up new transfer system that transfers even more of your stuff, wirelessly and without the need for a separate app. It works with Photos, contacts, sure, but also passwords, Wi-Fi credentials, and even eSIM. The goal of Android has always been to bring the best of computing to everyone. For years, speech-to-text has made mobile communication effortless. But for many in the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community, sign language is their preferred way of communicating. Up until now, typing in English on a keyboard has still been the default requirement on smartphones. The new Pixel 11 series changes that. With sign-to-text in Gboard and Live Translate you can compose messages, search, or have casual, face-to-face conversations in real time in American Sign Language. Using your device’s front camera, the sign-to-text feature tracks upper-body, hand, and facial movements in real time. Then it sends a 2D map of your movements to the server, not your video, to be translated into English. Building this right meant co-designing directly with the Deaf community and our AI Sign Language Advisory Committee (AISLAC) from day one. This is a great example of using AI to solve real everyday challenges and making technology more accessible. It’s been incredible to see the early reactions over the past few days, from people trying it out at the Google Store to seeing the excitement from Deaf users and community members imagining what this future looks like. It’s still early days for this technology, and we’re committed to continuously improving it, expanding to more Android devices, and bringing it to more sign languages over time. Really proud of the team's work on combating scams on Android devices. It's a massive problem that costs users $400B+ annually and technology and specifically AI can really help here. For example, we've trained models that are specifically tuned to detect fraudulent calls, or text messages. These capabilities have already protected millions of people. But it is a constant fight and we will keep investing here.

Android 17 is rolling out to Pixel devices today! Big congrats to the Android team and thank you to all the beta testers who helped us along the way. There are a ton of new features in A17, but here are some of my favorites: 🫧 Bubbles: Long-press any app to turn it into a floating window or dock it in a bottom bubble bar on large screens to seamlessly multitask while referencing notes or maps. 🤳 Screen Reactions: Use an improved toolbar to simultaneously record your phone screen and your selfie camera, and easily share video reactions over apps or sites. 🎮 Foldable Gaming: Level up with a 50/50 split layout featuring the game on top and a gamepad below, plus controller remapping and memory optimization to stop frame drops. 🔒 Security Safeguards: Take control with temporary location access, selective contact sharing, biometric lockdown in Find Hub, and enhanced anti-scam Live Threat Detection.
