How can AI help engage students and improve their reading comprehension? During a pilot study in India, Google’s speech-based reading tutor app Read Along helped 64% of student participants level up their reading proficiency, with AI-supported feedback and assistance. The app also helps teachers provide personalized learning support and track their students’ progress over time, which is particularly helpful in classrooms with low teacher-to-student ratios. Wildfires are on the rise due to climate change, but current satellite technology often detects them too late. Google has teamed up with leaders in the fire community to create #FireSat — a purpose-built constellation of satellites designed specifically to manage wildfires as small as a classroom. With FireSat, authorities will have high-resolution imagery that is updated globally every 20 minutes, helping them respond to fires before they become destructive. FireSat is a part of Google's ongoing efforts to help communities around the world help address the impacts of climate change. I was inspired by listening to visionary AI startup founders this week @Google DC. Hearing Remy Maraz talk about how Zella Life’s AI powered coaching platform is helping to reduce workplace bias and improve retention and workforce development, or how Anthony Matos (Shubox) is using AI to help small businesses tell their story more effectively to banks and improve small business lending. These entrepreneurs aren't just building businesses; they're shaping the future, and last night was a powerful reminder that we all have a hand in shaping the future of AI. Here are three of my takeaways from our discussion: -Small businesses matter. Many of the founders we heard from had never been involved in any kind of advocacy before because they didn’t think their voices would be heard. They were overwhelmed from the positive reception they received and felt that sharing their stories with policymakers really made an impact. This experience underscores the importance of ensuring that SMBs have a seat at the table when it comes to shaping AI policy. -Lawmakers are eager to learn about AI, especially from those using it in everyday life to build new things. The founders shared how positively the stories of their AI startups were received, with lawmakers and staff asking thoughtful questions and clearly eager to learn more. This enthusiasm demonstrates a growing recognition of AI’s potential to transform industries and improve lives. The founders shared that there was clear alignment from policymakers across the board that ensuring America leads the world on AI innovation is a top priority. -AI’s transformative impact is not limited to the tech sector. The founders we heard from started companies from a range of industries including agriculture, healthcare, education, retail and more – and they all use AI in different ways. This diversity of applications highlights the broad potential of AI to revolutionize various aspects of our economy and society. At Google, we're proud to support these founders and the broader startup ecosystem, especially through our Google for Startups Founders Fund. And as announced today, our new initiative with America's Small Business Development Centers will empower even more businesses to harness the potential of AI. Together, we're building an AI-driven future that benefits everyone. #AI #startups #innovation #policy

According to a recent study from the Connected Commerce Council, 82% of small businesses using #AI have already seen positive outcomes with productivity and increased sales. Shared at today’s Annual America's SBDC (ASBDC) Conference, #Googleorg and #GrowWithGoogle are helping small businesses unlock the power of AI through new training and funding for the ASBDC network. Lead pipes, once favored for their durability, pose potential health risks. The US EPA estimates that there are over 9M lead pipes serving drinking water across the US, yet local governments and utility companies lack complete information of where these pipes are located. With support from Google.org, water analytics company BlueConduit launched the #LeadOut Map — an educational tool that uses predictive modeling and artificial intelligence to help people understand their risk of lead exposure and take action. To date, BlueConduit has already surveyed nearly 5 million service lines across more than 300 communities in the United States and Canada, impacting more than 10 million people. Thanks also to our team at the Google.org Fellowship Program, who helped BlueConduit build the LeadOut Map on a full-time, pro bono basis. 🔗 Learn more: https://goo.gle/3zeNiIp #publicpolicy #gettheleadout #waterquality

Farms have different microclimates that require unique care depending on the weather. Changes in elevation, proximity to water sources like lakes, and even the types of grass or crops grown can all create different conditions. Traditional weather forecasting isn’t location-specific enough, causing many farmers to over- and under-irrigate. As a result, many of them experience significant financial and operational losses. To help, Benchmark Labs Inc. — a recipient of the Google for Startups Founders Fund — is providing AI-driven weather forecasting and insights, tailored to specific locations. Benchmark’s tools are giving customers more actionable microclimate-level alerts across their farms, helping increase their crop yields by 50 to 100 percent, and lowering water demands by 10 percent. Data-driven decision-making is crucial for cities to effectively combat urban heat islands. Google's new #HeatResilience tool applies AI to satellite and aerial imagery, helping cities identify their hottest, most vulnerable communities and prioritize cooling strategies. By accounting for local characteristics like green space and roof reflectivity, this tool provides actionable insights at the neighborhood level. We're currently piloting the tool in 14 U.S. cities, aiding officials in developing plans to address rising temperatures. Learn more here ➡️ https://goo.gle/3XblWL7 #publicpolicy #AI #climatechange
