  • As families settle back into school routines, finding ways to best support healthy digital habits at home is top of mind for parents across the UK. This week YouTube brought together leading British parenting creators and influencers for a discussion about youth safety online, healthy screen time and digital wellbeing. The session was co-hosted by YouTube's UK MD Alison Lomax and creator and NSPCC Ambassador Louise Pentland, who sat down with Dr. Garth Graham to discuss digital safety, designing robust protections for young people and how to cultivate healthy online habits. Dr Garth explored: 📽️ YouTube’s default privacy and wellbeing protections: For users under 18, we default any videos they upload to private so that no one else can see them. We turn autoplay off by default, so they’re not seeing an endless string of videos. And we block personalised ad targeting. Our wellbeing protections - like our take a break and bedtime reminders - are automatically on.  📽️ Age-appropriate content: YouTube Kids offers a curated environment for the youngest viewers. Kid Accounts provide a managed middle ground with 3 content tiers to suit different ages, and Teen Accounts deliver near full access with automatic safety guardrails to avoid content rated 18+. 📽️ Tools that empower parents: Flexible controls via YouTube Family Centre, with features like our industry-leading Shorts feed timer (which can be set to 0!) help families set boundaries without friction. 📽️ Nurturing real-world learning: Dr Garth Graham and education creator Katie Estruch highlighted how 95% of UK teens use video to support their schoolwork. Protecting young people online requires collaboration, clear boundaries and ongoing conversation with the parenting community. A huge thank you to everyone who joined, asked candid questions and who continue to champion youth wellbeing. #backtoschool

  • While you were on holiday, science didn’t take a break 🏖️ At Google, we’re not just talking about what AI might do in the future—we are actively deploying it with partners to make a real, positive impact on the ground today. From public health to climate action, we’re bringing AI out of the lab and into the real world. Here are some of our scientific breakthroughs you might have missed this summer: ✈️ First, climate: We launched Operation Blue Skies, a UK-backed trial using AI to help prevent planes from forming warming contrails—which cause roughly a third of aviation's total warming impact. 🤖 Second, robotics: Our new Gemini Robotics 2 models are taking AI off the tabletop and into physical spaces, giving robots the whole-body intelligence they need to cooperate and do physical work. ⛈️ Third, weather: Our new WeatherNext 3 model can zoom down to just 5 kilometers to predict more localized weather shifts—improving forecasting for underserved regions and boosting renewable energy output. So if you've ever wondered how we can use AI to predict natural disasters... It’s a critical question, especially as extreme weather events impact more people around the world. As part of "Ask a Scientist"—our series taking you behind the scenes with Google’s researchers—we spoke with Google DeepMind Research Scientist Ferran Alet Puig about his work looking into the evolution of weather forecasting, from right here in London. By training AI on 50 years of historical weather data, Ferran and his team developed WeatherNext. From replacing building-sized supercomputers with models that run on a single TPU to improving forecasting accuracy, learn how we’re working to extend public forecast horizons to give communities more time to prepare before a storm makes landfall. • As families across the UK dive headfirst into the back-to-school routine, YouTube's Head of Health, Dr Garth Graham, physician and father of four, shares key advice on building healthy digital habits for kids. 🐷 Even Peppa Pig's parents, Mummy and Daddy Pig, reached out to him for tips as Peppa is spending more time on screens! Here are his top recommendations for managing online time and setting healthy boundaries: 💬 Talk Openly: Involve children in discussions about their screentime and what they are, and aren’t, allowed to watch and do. When they feel part of the decision-making process, they are much more likely to follow the rules. ⏱️ Set Boundaries: Aim for clear daily limits and use logical checkpoints—like the end of an episode or level—so transitions feel smooth and fair. 👨👩👧👦 Watch Together: Co-viewing turns watch time into a connected, shared family moment and helps build their critical thinking skills. 🏅Prioritize High-Quality Content: Choose age-appropriate, enriching media that sparks curiosity, imagination, and supports early learning.
