You can add a book you own on Google Play to a Gemini Notebook and ask it questions, with answers grounded in the book rather than a stranger's summary of it. When Steven Johnson demoed NotebookLM this spring, he described it as a way to get more out of the books he's read, not to replace reading them. That's the part I care about. When I wrote Radical Candor, I was hoping you’d read it through like a book of short stories, and then in the moment flip back to the page about whatever it is you’re struggling with that day. Feeling like your 1:1’s aren’t going that well? What did I write in Radical Candor about 1:1’s. Now, rather than flipping through the book, you can ask in the Gemini Notebook where you dropped Radical Candor. It will give you a short answer and also show you the exact pages in the book. I've posted before on what was previously known as NotebookLM (now Gemini Notebook) -- developed by my colleagues in Google Labs and one of our tools that I use a lot. And now to responsibly make more high-quality information available and accessible for research and work, we’re launching Expert Intelligence as part of Gemini Notebook. Expert Intelligence helps incorporate insights from leading authors, publications, and domain experts into Gemini Notebook (and more Google products will be joining soon). We’re starting today with more than 100,000 books from major publishers, including Bloomsbury, De Gruyter Brill, Johns Hopkins University Press, Macmillan Publishers, O’Reilly Media and Penguin Random House. You can add ebooks you’ve purchased from Google Play Books directly to a Gemini Notebook and then ask questions about the book and receive responses grounded directly in that book. You can also deepen your understanding with all the various Notebook features including citations back to your sources, Audio Overviews, quizzes, infographics drawing from the book etc. And you can combine the content from the book with a variety of other sources, including your own information. We’re also launching special Featured Notebooks from 15 bestselling authors that have additional sources and artifacts that will help readers dig even deeper. "I'm walking into my first board meeting tomorrow, how do we build trust in the first 10 minutes?" "I'm designing my 35th, help me make it more than a bar night." "I'm going on a trip with my parents, how do we actually connect?" "We're designing our intercultural wedding, how do we make it magical and not formulaic?" 🍽️ They each wanted a "recipe" for how to design an experience. I'm sharing some of the meaningful ones that helped them (ingredients, steps, and a little science explaining why it works). 👪 What I learned is that people wanted to connect with the most important people in their lives, but were stuck. Holidays with parents, date night with their partner, a cousin's trip, a team offsite, a birthday, a baby shower. We default to the same script and wonder why the night felt okay but not great. It's usually not a lack of love in the room. It's a lack of inspiration about how. 🍚 In the same way you pull up a food recipe when you want to cook something great for someone, I believe we need inspiration from recipes for the experiences we host. Will Houghteling posted thisWhen FC acquired Strive many, many moons ago, my first believer Paul Freedman said: "Call me in a few months, I'd love to fund your next startup." I protested, explaining that I planned to stay for a while. He laughed: "Will, you're among the least patient people I know, either they'll fire you or you'll quit, but you'll be emailing me soon enough." He was right about the impatience, but wrong about the fit. It was a joy and privilege to work at FC these last many years. We scaled Strive's interactive learning platform to 500x as many customers, built incredible new features and functionality, grew the team 5x, and most importantly, transformed the lives of millions of leaders. After our closest family members and best friends, our managers often have the largest impact on whether we feel meaning, belonging and opportunity at work and in life. FC's mission – transforming managers into leaders, building teams that trust and organizations that ascend, enabling greatness in people and organizations everywhere – is noble. I am proud to have played a small role advancing it, and endlessly grateful to have done it alongside such a smart, creative, passionate and high-integrity team that kept me bleeding FC blue far longer than I and others expected. So why leave? Recently, one of my favorite teammates from my first ever job, Josh Woodward, asked me to (re)join him at Google, working on Gemini/Google Labs to build new AI products that help humans flourish. AI is a singularly consequential technology, and I believe that if harnessed correctly, it can help people realize their potential and live deep, full lives. Will Houghteling shared thisTwo years ago one of my best (and most clever + creative) friends Mike Wang joined Long Journey ventures. He had never worked in venture, so I was a bit surprised. He had many compelling reasons for the move, but one that didn't click at the time was "[Long Journey partner/co-founder] Cyan Banister is truly n of 1. She's special. She's got some magic I want to be around." I get it now. I was lucky to interview Cyan for FranklinCovey OnLeadership and left the conversation impressed, inspired and energized. Will Houghteling liked thisChris Ho (he/him) Thanks for this, it wouldn’t fit in a comment! My layoff scared the hell out of me. I didn’t realize at the time that it was also about to give me something I hadn’t had in years: the freedom to decide what I wanted my life to look like. There were years in my last company that I genuinely loved. I felt valued, balanced and part of a winning team. I worked with extraordinary people, did meaningful work and kept growing into new roles and new challenges. I contributed at a high level and have results I’m still incredibly proud of, including driving significant adoption growth and helping some remarkable organizations get more value from the work we were doing. But organizations change. Leadership changes. Mine changed several times, and somewhere along the way, what was expected of me changed too. I continued working hard, learning, adapting and delivering, but I increasingly felt that I was being judged against expectations that no one was clearly communicating. There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from trying to hit a target you can’t see. Eventually, I was laid off, it was my first time. And yes, there was fear. A lot of it. Work had been such a big part of my identity for so long that losing the role made me question things I thought I knew about myself. Was I still good at this? Had I somehow lost my edge? What happens when the career you spent decades building suddenly stops following the path you thought it would? Then something unexpected happened. Life got bigger. I started consulting and advising. I started writing more. I coach and help people work through ideas and problems. I serve on local boards and get to contribute to the community I love. I have time for my health and my family. I have fascinating conversations with people doing fascinating things. I’m building HumanSpark.io around ideas I deeply believe in, while still being open to the right next role and the right team. My career hasn’t stopped. It has expanded. And perhaps most importantly, I am remembering that a full life was never supposed to fit inside a job description. Being overlooked by someone else does not make you less valuable. For me, the sequence was pretty simple. Layoff. Fear. And, eventually, freedom. I wouldn’t have chosen the first two. I’m incredibly grateful for the thirdWill Houghteling liked thisYou don't need to lose the job to find yourself. But sometimes it's the only thing that finally gets your attention. To continue a theme I've been wrestling lately which revolves around identity in the workplace. Same theme. Different reason. Another leader was working late hours, saying yes to everything, taking on too much. The body noticed before they did. Stress became physical. Mental. And underneath it all, they weren't even getting the appreciation for what they were carrying. So they woke up. Became conscious. Bet on themselves. What happened in between is where the real work started. Building their Leadership Mission Statement. Set boundaries. Got honest about what success actually meant to them, not the version they'd inherited. Their insight and aha? 𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝘆 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆, 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗺𝘆 𝗷𝗼𝗯. Things became different. Boundaries in place. Energized instead of depleted. Clear and grounded. Unattached. . . So why wait until burnout forces the question? Ask yourself this: . . . Will Houghteling reacted on thisWill Houghteling reacted on thisThis weekend I had one of those moments that quietly rearranges your perspective. I spent time with my CASA youth, who is heading into her junior year of high school. During the years we’ve known each other, I have watched her life transform. She was adopted into a loving family. She has grown into an intelligent, thoughtful, funny young woman with big dreams and an even bigger future. And here’s what stopped me in my tracks. She’s planning her future in technology and design. We talked about creativity, innovation, careers, and the kind of life she wants to build. I listened as she shared her ideas, and all I could think was: This is why CASA matters. Not because it rescues children. Because it refuses to let their circumstances define their trajectory. A single caring adult cannot erase trauma. But they can create consistency. They can advocate. They can remind a young person, over and over again, that they are worthy of opportunity, joy, and ambitious dreams. I have gained far more from this relationship than I have given. I have learned that resilience is not some grand heroic act. Sometimes it looks like a teenager planning her future, sketching out ideas, dreaming about design, and believing she belongs in rooms she has not even entered yet. And believe me, she does. Every child deserves someone in their corner. Every child deserves to be seen for who they are becoming, not just where they started. I am endlessly grateful to be part of this journey and incredibly proud of the young woman she is becoming. This is the quiet magic of CASA. It changes lives, including mine. Thank you to CASA of Santa Cruz County for creating these life-changing connections every single day.

Over the coming months, Portal A will be working with MLBPA to build out a slate of brand-funded series featuring the most influential players in Major League Baseball, effectively turning the players' social channels into a content network.
