M-KOPA has reached 10 million customers across Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa. The milestone is significant. However, what really stands out is how quickly the company has reached it. M-KOPA took approximately eight years to acquire its first one million customers, reaching that milestone in 2020. It has since added another nine million customers in only six years and is now onboarding approximately 10,000 customers daily. The growth trajectory is remarkable: ✅ 1 million customers in 2020 ✅ 2 million customers in 2022 ✅ Over 7 million customers by July 2025 ✅ 10 million customers by July 2026 What M-KOPA has built is increasingly about much more than smartphone financing. Its “More Than a Phone” platform uses the smartphone as an entry point into embedded credit, insurance, device protection, affordable data and other digital financial services. The company has now: 1️⃣ Unlocked more than US$2 billion in credit 2️⃣ Built a network of over 40,000 agents 3️⃣ Produced over 3.3 million devices at its Kenya assembly facility 4️⃣ Expanded its model successfully across five different African markets 5️⃣ Recorded average annual revenue growth of 50% since 2020 For me, the bigger story is how M-KOPA has designed its model around Africa’s “Every Day Earners”—traders, boda boda riders, tailors, shopkeepers and millions of others who earn daily but are often excluded by financial systems built around monthly payslips. As M-KOPA CEO Jesse Moore puts it: “Informal has never meant unviable.” Reaching 10 million customers proves demand and scalability. The next phase will be about demonstrating sustainable customer value, responsible lending, transparent pricing, strong portfolio performance and deeper access to financial services. I have unpacked the milestone, M-KOPA’s growth trajectory and what its evolution could mean for the future of fintech and financial inclusion across Africa. Everyone focuses on the smartphone, but I think that's the least interesting part. The real innovation is that M-KOPA has converted a sales network into a reusable distribution infrastructure. Once you own trusted last-mile relationships, every new financial product becomes cheaper to launch and easier to adopt. In Africa, competitive advantage isn't who builds the best app, it's who builds the strongest path to the customer. That's infrastructure, not fintech. 👣 The Barefoot Economist
