BIKE ENTHUSIASTS SPEAK OUT BANNING BIKES ON MANDAUE-MACTAN BRIDGES

However, Maximo still does not agree to permanently ban bicycles from plying the two bridges.

“I do not agree to the ban. A lot of Cebuanos are using bicycles as a means of transportation. Can you imagine a person who bikes to work from Mandaue to Mactan cannot cross the bridge anymore? Where will he pass then?,” said Maximo.

He suggests to “allow the cyclists to cross the bridge provided he walks his bike and not ride on it, just like pedestrians crossing the bridge. They can do this in the [Marcelo] Fernan Bridge since a pathway has been provided for this.”

According to Maximo, the bicycle ban is “jurassic thinking.”

“Instead of encouraging Cebu to use bicycles as an alternative mode of transpo, the proposed bridge bike ban is jurassic thinking actually,” quipped Maximo...

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Ica Maximo of YKKBikes-Forza is unlikely to defend her Women Open title due to conflict with her academic obligations at Sacred Heart School–Hijas de Jesus.

15th TOUR NI FRANK ROLLS OFF TODAY

The Freeman Newspaper
CEBU, Philippines - Over a hundred pedal pushers are all raring to plunge into action in the bigger and better 15th Tour Ni Frank, which will roll off today starting at the JY Square Mall grounds in Barangay Lahug and ending at Tops in Barangay Busay, Cebu City.
The categories to be contested are the men’s under-23, 39-under, 40-above and 50-above and the women’s open where the decorated Cebuano junior cyclist Ica Maximo is the defending champion.
The 17-year-old Maximo of YKK Bikes-Forza, however, is unlikely to defend her title due to conflict with her academic obligations.
"I cannot train. We have our mid-term exams this week and I need to study. I almost missed the SAC Awarding last Tuesday due to the school exams. I have to hurry back home, thus, I was not able to finish the awarding and participate in the group photo with my fellow athletes," shares the former Batang Pinoy champion who received her third award from the Sportswriters Association of Cebu.

PAGES: FRED UYTENGSU'S INSPIRING MESSAGE

“So how do we take what we learned as athletes and transform that into an endeavor that is meaningful? Some can become coaches and help the next generation of athletes to become better. Some go on to business. Some even pursue politics. Sadly, some have not prepared for that next chapter in life.

“What I want to leave everyone here with is that through sports, the lessons of teamwork, hard work, sportsmanship, discipline, motivation and sacrifice are amongst the greatest life lessons we can ever learn. Take these lessons to heart while you are an athlete competing but also remember these lessons and attributes when it is time for your journey to change...

CONSOLACION SETS STAGE FOR DANAO XTERRA

“Our route (for the bike race) is very technical as it features nearly 90 percent off-road course. It is a single track and riders will have to tackle a lot of downhills and uphills. They will need to cross a river, pass by a cornfield, where they could encounter farmers, who will be hard at work at that time, plowing the field,” Choachuy said.

The race will start with a 5-kilometer run, followed by a 20K bike and will finish with a 3K run.

MISSION POSSIBLE

Phil. Daily Inquirer
by June Navarro
Jan. 22, 2017 issue

“Our ultimate goal is to have a sustainable GRASSROOTS program to fuel our elite program. This will be the biggest purpose that the PSI will serve.”...

With Velasco at the helm, the PSI will have a three-pronged strategy beginning with grassroots sports DEVELOPMENT and the IDENTIFICATION of talented athletes. The second phase focuses on the high-performance TRAINING of elite athletes using a scientific approach, just like what the world’s sports superpowers have been doing...

Complementing these two structural programs is sports EDUCATION in which the institute will create an academy for scientific research and the education of the athletes in cooperation with the local government units and the Department of Education...

The PSI has forged links with regional training centers in Davao del Norte, Pagadian City, Tacloban, CEBU CITY, Ilocos Norte, Naga City, Legazpi City and Pili, Albay. A team of 15 monitors along with 60 coordinators will be sent across the country to provide technical support to the LGUs, which are at the forefront of discovering athletic talents...

Velasco’s reputation precedes him in the realm of sports science. He was pirated from the PCSM by the Hong Kong Institute of Sports in 2008 to handle the strength and conditioning programs of its teams in swimming, bowling, cycling, athletics and the differently abled. He spent his last 10 months there as the training supervisor of the HK rugby squad, Asia’s second best after Japan.

Lee, Hong Kong’s first-ever Olympic medalist in CYCLING, is Velasco’s finest ward. Already a double gold medalist in the Asian Games (2010 Guangzhou and 2014 Incheon), SHE won the bronze in the London Olympics and several medals in the UCI World Championships.

“We spent SIX years training [Lee],” Velasco says. “It’s a long, tedious process, but that’s how other countries create world-class athletes. We want to duplicate that process here with the PSI.”

Asked when the PSI will see the first big fruit of its labor, Velasco says the Filipino athlete can reach optimum strength in 2024. That’s the next Olympic quadrennial after Tokyo 2020... Read more

DAWN OF A NEW ERA

The Freeman Newspaper
Manny Villaruel, Sports Ed
Jan. 18, 2017 issue

"The PSI is the Commission's arm that will focus on grassroots sports program that caters to community in towns, cities, municipalities and provinces. The Institute aims to lay a strong foundation for Philippine sports and youth development, bridge the gap in sports development and excellence, produce new breed of sports professionals, practitioners, leaders and athletes with high levels of competence, ethical and moral values and global competitiveness," said Ramirez in a statement...

On the other hand, PSI's Grassroots Sports Development Program, which deals with the athletes identification program, comes in four stages;1. the training of pool of researchers to educate Physical Education teachers to identify poential candidates for later sports enhancement;2. testing phase to apply the 'standard norms' developed by the Philippine Centre for Sports Medicine in determining the right candidate is utilized;3.talent selection to screen all prospective athletes; and 4. inclusion in the Smart Kids program. Those selection will be part of PSI's Elite Sports Program (ESP) for inclusion in the national pool of athletes...Read more

PAGES: ED HAYCO, IN HIS OWN WORDS

Matchpoint
by John Pages
Sun Star Cebu

AS chairman of the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) since 2010, Ed Hayco has accomplished plenty. In his own words, Ed shares with us his thoughts:

ON CULTURE: Instead of accomplishments, we prefer to call it our contributions. At the top of our list is culture and believing in one’s self. Confidence would have been an easier word but believing in one’s self has a deeper meaning.

Let me tell you a touching story. The father of an archery athlete named Niño approached me in a gathering. I didn’t know him. He explained how happy he was that his son was helping out as a volunteer coach in Guadalupe public elementary. Their family was supposed to go on a three-week vacation but he pleaded with his father to cancel the vacation because he was assigned to give lessons in archery. The father recounted to us the story with so much pride in his son for how responsible he has become.

Another story was during the Batang Pinoy in Tagum. A father approached me during badminton competition. He wanted to say thank you and explained that his daughter was very shy. But as a volunteer coach during summer, her daughter was able to learn 3 things: 1) Overcome her shyness; 2) Develop leadership through coaching; and the most meaningful and the exact words of the father, 3): “My daughter developed “a heart for others!”

The Guinness records in archery, chess, arnis, and winning the overall title in Batang Pinoy, the summer grassroots, the volunteer coaching, etc. were all tools to achieve this culture. The success of any nation or business is its culture.

Our theme, “Transforming our youth thru sports,” is about character-building. Sports can either bring out the best or worst in an athlete.. the gold medal is just part of the journey, not the end.

2017 PLANS. To work closely with DepEd. 1) We have plans to implement a school for sports where all athletes will be in one classroom. They will have different class schedules. 2) An assistant principal for sports in the schools for sports. 3) Develop incentives for public school teacher-coaches and school principals so that the athletes and coaches will be better attended to. 4) Assign high level coaches to train public school teacher-coaches to raise the level of coaching competence. 5) Institutionalize strength and conditioning programs into public school sports programs. 6) Assign 25 volunteer high-level coaches to offer free coaching thrice-a-week, year-round in the Abellana sports center catering to Abellana high school and city central elementary. That’s a potential source of athletes having a population of 9,000 students. If this succeeds, we’ll do similar programs with other schools.

Why are our focus in public schools? Because the students have the least opportunities and resources and yet, they are our richest sources of athletes. Most of these kids cannot afford a P300/session coach. But these kids have the heart of an athlete — they thrive in adversity. We provide them with a hope for a better future.

ON BUTCH RAMIREZ. The PSC Chairman is supportive of Cebu because he has been closely watching our programs when he was chairman in 2005. Since then, we’ve been in touch and have always appraised him of our grassroots program which now covers 25 sports, and also our Guinness records.

Thru volunteerism, we develop the passion and dedication of the athlete for the sports, instead of being obsessed and entitled. This culture has a rippling effect. Winning medals now has a deeper meaning and a gold medal weighs heavier in a different way. When an athlete who has volunteered wins a medal, he wears it with a deeper sense of pride.

ON DEPED. I’ve been trying to lobby this idea, still a hard sell, that the PSC chairman needs to be the undersecretary of DepEd for Sports. As long as PSC is not part of or not an insider of DepEd, the sports programs policies of PSC cannot be implemented effectively, especially the grassroots program.

Just like CCSC. We have a sports program but who do we implement it with? There is no single unit in Phil. govt. that has the command of warm bodies. Only DepEd can make a memo, require and produce the number of kids. That’s why CCSC works closely with DepEd. All our programs are thru DepEd. Once we realize this organizational “flaw,” we can be an effective conductor of the orchestra.

FINAL WORDS. I’m not really a sports person. During the Los Angeles Olympics, the stadium was in front of our hotel. I didn’t even watch! It doesn’t excite me to be in a competition. I’d rather watch Broadway! What an irony? In short, sports to me is a tool. A social screwdriver or pliers to pry open the potential of the underprivileged kids and “make them believe in themselves.” As businessmen, we approach the sports program like a social entrepreneur: we see coaches as managers, athletes as employees, the product as medals and the grassroots training pool. Right culture plus motivated employees equals productivity!
