The Koopa Bros. are a quartet of costumed ninja Koopa Troopas consisting of the leader, Red Ninjakoopa and three of his brothers, Black Ninjakoopa, Yellow Ninjakoopa, and Green Ninjakoopa. A parody of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, they are self-absorbed and love acting cool. In Paper Mario, they are the bosses of the Koopa Bros. Fortress during "Chapter 1: Storming Koopa Bros. Fortress". Bowser and Kammy Koopa use them to guard Eldstar, the first Star Spirit in the game.

Background[edit]
It is mentioned by several characters throughout Paper Mario that the Koopa Bros. were originally inhabitants of Koopa Village.[1][2] Russ T. claims that at Koopa Village, Kent C. Koopa frequently trained with "four village Koopas", who were implied to be the Koopa Bros., but always beat them.
Eventually, according to an inhabitant of Koopa Village,[2] the Koopa Bros. left the village because they were bored. Goombario informs Mario that the Koopa Bros. found a ruined fortress inhabited by Bob-ombs, repaired it, and set up the Koopa Bros. Fortress. Evidently, from the enemies Mario encounters in the fortress, they recruited the Bob-ombs and Koopas.
When Bowser and Kammy Koopa stole the wish-granting Star Rod and imprisoned the Star Spirits, they were impressed with the Koopa Bros. (Bowser also approved of the disguise the Koopa Bros. would later use to attack Mario) and entrusted Eldstar to them. According to the Bob-ombs that were jailed in the fortress,[1] the Koopa Bros. used to be kind and fun, young leaders to work with, but became selfish and arrogant from their thrill-seeking because Kammy Koopa liked them. Goombario's commentary also describes the Koopa Bros. as short-tempered. According to Bombette and various Bob-ombs,[3] the Bob-ombs were overworked, with one complaining about having to work 25 hours a day.[4] Some Bob-ombs fled the fortress to Koopa Village,[5] warning Mario about the bad working conditions. Bombette, who could not handle the workload any longer, exploded next to them, which angered the Koopa Bros. and locked her in a cell. They also suspected a couple other Bob-ombs were going to rebel, so they imprisoned them, too.
Paper Mario[edit]
In Paper Mario, the Koopa Bros. first appear in Peach's Castle after the Goomba King's defeat, where they reassure both Kammy Koopa and Bowser that they can stop Mario, unlike Goomba King, and show them a special technique, which impresses Bowser. After revealing it, Bowser questions the Koopa Bros. who is guarding their fortress while they are here, causing them to panic and admit no one, which infuriates Bowser. Bowser then yells at them to run back and guard their fortress.
At Toad Town, the Koopa Bros. attempt to stop Mario from reaching Pleasant Path and their fortress by disguising themselves as dark colored Toads who "rule the streets", under the name Nash T. (a pun on "nasty")[6] according to a nearby Toad after their disguises are blown prior to entering Pleasant Path (and a scribble the back side of the Toad Town notice board during Chapters 4 and 6). They attempt to block Mario's way, lying to him that it is too dangerous for him to proceed. Mario gets help from Merlon, who destroys their disguises with his magic, forcing them to retreat and allowing Mario to proceed to their fortress.
When Black Ninjakoopa spots Mario approach the fortress, he alerts his brothers and they set various traps and obstacles while Green Ninjakoopa secures the keys behind cells and enemies. Yellow Ninjakoopa in particular lays a trap involving a ? Block which activates a trap door below it. This trap, backfires, however, as Mario falls and meets the imprisoned Bob-ombs and befriends Bombette. Mario helps her and other Bob-ombs escape by using her to destroy a part of the wall. When Mario finally reaches the Koopa Bros. at the top of the fortress, Red Ninjakoopa commands his brothers to set up three Bill Blasters that shoot Bullet Bills at Mario.
Before fighting the Koopa Bros., Mario faces Black Ninjakoopa, who retreats at Red Ninjakoopa's command and has Mario fight a crude reconstruction of Bowser, Bowser???, with the Koopa Bros.' piloting inside and attempting to mimic Bowser's speech patterns to taunt Mario. When their fake Bowser is destroyed, the Koopa Bros. reveal themselves and form a stack, ready to attack. While they have similar stats as a Koopa Troopa and perform the Shell Toss as a Koopa Troopa, they have a special attack, the Ninjakoopa Special, where they stack and, on the next turn, perform a powerful whirlwind attack with its power dependent on the number of Koopa Bros. stacked. This stack, when struck with a Hammer, makes them unstable and, on a second hit, topples the stack and forces the Koopa Bros. on their backs, where, similar to Koopa Troopas, they are exposed for damage and need to spend two turns to get up. Bombette and Koopers' abilities are helpful for the battle; Bombette's Bomb attack can knock over the Koopa Bros. stack instantly, while Kooper's Power Shell can hit all of them at once once they are toppled. Goombario can help flip over any remaining Koopa Brother if needed.
Once Mario defeats the Koopa Bros., they fall into the prison cell that used to host Mario and the Bob-ombs. The exit to the cell has been barricaded with bolted planks, preventing the Koopa Bros. from immediately escaping. An article from Toad Town News also documents their defeat, while friendly Bob-ombs reside in Koopa Village and thank Mario for defeating the Koopa Bros.. If Mario visits the prison cell later, however, the Koopa Bros. have escaped, even though the wooden barricade remains.
Additionally, when Mario returns to his house after Chapter 1, he receives a letter from the Koopa Bros. where they swear revenge for their defeat, setting up for a later encounter.
In Chapter 8, the third Guard Door at Bowser's Castle summons the the Koopa Bros. to attack Mario. The Koopa Bros., who claim to have become stronger (even renaming themselves "the Super Ultra Mighty Koopa Bros. the Great"), prepare to fight Mario, but are all easily knocked away by Jr. Troopa. When Mario beats Jr. Troopa, the Guard Door, baffled, reasons that since Jr. Troopa defeated the Koopa Bros., and Mario defeated Jr. Troopa, Mario has technically completed the task assigned to him and allows him to pass through.
During the ending parade of Paper Mario, the Koopa Bros. appear riding a float built from the remnants of their fake Bowser. As the Koopa Bros. strike a pose, several Bob-ombs explode near them, covering them in soot.
Super Mario-kun[edit]
In volume 1 of Super Mario-kun, a Japan-exclusive manga, nine years prior to the release of Paper Mario, a similar group called the "Mutant Ninja Sentai Nokonokoman" appear to attack Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi in a platform-filled area, taking on various disguises and using shell-like shurikens in combat. The Koopa Bros.' true appearance in the manga is volume 25, where, like their game counterparts, are first encountered by Mario, Goombario and Kooper disguised as Toads.

- Though the game characterizes them as standard Koopa Troopas, to set them apart from other Koopa Troopas, the Koopa Bros.' sprites are modified to appear larger, with a bigger head and body and with larger hands and arms and a thicker beak. Their shells have also been moved down, making their head scarves more visible.
