Sairesu are big-eared enemies in Donkey Kong on the Game Boy. They appear to be a combination between a mouse's head and a flower bud.

History[edit]

Donkey Kong (Game Boy)[edit]

They are first encountered in Stage 2-10 of the Forest. Sairesu are big-eared creatures usually found sleeping on the floor, covered with their wide ears. If they sense Mario approaching, they wake up, look back and forth, and then charge in his direction with the spike on their forehead. If Mario touches either one of their sides, he receives an instant defeat. If he dodges them, the Sairesu will continue to charge in the direction they initially followed until encountering a wall or an edge; thereafter, they retire slowly and fall asleep again. Sairesu are capable of reaching a higher velocity than Mario's.

Super Mario Kodansha manga[edit]

In the Super Mario Kodansha manga, a Sairesu plays an important role of general of the enemy troops in the Donkey Kong adaptation.

In chapter 2 of Super Mario: Donkey Kong 1 a Sairesu sets up a trap and, once it hears it activate, goes to warn the sleeping Donkey Kong Jr. of the presence of intruders. While waking up, Donkey Kong Jr. mistakes it for Mezamashi-kun (a Japanese cartoon allarm clock mascot) which, according to the enemy page list, seems to become its nickname.[1] Sairesu then warns Donkey Kong Snr. when Junior gets captured and, in the following chapter, it organizes a rescue with the help of his second-in-command, a Kānyī. While they succeed in their mission, they end up getting trampled by the heroes. After getting up, the two then kidnap Princess Peach as their hostage, but are strangely ignored.

In the volume's bonus chapter, two Sairesu are part of the animal attractions in Peach Zoo.

In Super Mario: Donkey Kong 2, Sairesu is left on Donkey Kong Island, where he proceeds to organize the contruction of the Tower for Donkey Kong and Pauline's honeymoon. When the Kongs and heroes return, Sairesu apologies for being late in finishing the construction, but Junior is not worries of that and orders Sairesu and the army to attack Mario and friends, which they do until Monchee interveens. In chapter 3, Sairesu still leads the Kong army and helps DK and the others in his fight against the Kremling Krew. When DK and Donkey Kong Snr. are knocked out, the Kong army panics for the double defeat of their leaders and retreats.

Sleeping and waking up is a very bad idea.

Sairesu is always sleeping, using his big ears as an eye mask. He wakes up to the sound of Mario landing on the ground when he jumps, and when he spots Mario, he will chase after him with great speed.
