Birth - Second Grade Teacher
To receive a license to teach Early Childhood (birth through the second
grade) a person must:
Complete: Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators and Praxis Content Area Test
Hold a bachelor's degree or graduate degree from an accredited college or
university.
Have completed three (3) semester hours of credit in a course of study regarding
parental involvement and family engagement;
Have completed a program of preparation to teach such pupils that is approved
by the board; or
Hold a license to teach such pupils that was issued by another state and approved
by the commission; or
Hold an Elementary license, a secondary license, or a license to teach middle
school or junior high school education, that is endorsed with a major in child care.
Have completed at least thirty-five (35) semester hours of courses in early
childhood education for children who are developing typically and atypically
Elementary Subjects K-8 Teacher
To receive a license to teach elementary education
(kindergarten through 8th grade) a person must:
Complete: Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators and Praxis
Content Area Test
Hold a bachelor's degree or graduate degree from an accredited
college or university.
Have completed, pursuant to the provisions of NAC 391.095, a
program of preparation for teaching in the elementary grades
which is approved by the Board.
Have completed, pursuant to the provisions of NAC 391.045: Three
(3) semester hours of credit in:
Education or curricular adaptation for pupils with disabilities
A course of study regarding parental involvement and family
engagement.
Substitute Teacher
To qualify for a license to substitute teach in kindergarten
through twelfth grade, a person must:
Be a citizen of the United States, or be a lawful permanent
resident of the United States with a valid Permanent Resident
Card.
Have earned a minimum of sixty (60) semester credits, or an
associates degree or higher, from a regionally accredited college
or university, as reflected on an official transcript.
Special Education Teacher:
To receive an endorsement to teach in a program of gifted
and talented education, a person must:
Hold a license for the level of education in which the program is
offered
Have two (2 ) years of verified experience as a teacher in schools
approved by the department
Have completed twelve (12) semester hours of credit from an
accredited college or university to include three (3) semester
hours of credit in each of the following areas of study:
Characteristics and needs of gifted and talented pupils;
Assessment of gifted and talented pupils and programs for such
pupils;
Curriculum in content areas for gifted and talented pupils;
Methodology and strategies for teaching gifted and talented pupils.
Reading Specialist
To receive an endorsement as a reading specialist, a person
must:
Hold a masters degree;
Have three (3) years of verified experience as a teacher in stateapproved schools;
Hold a valid elementary, middle school or junior high, secondary
or special teaching license, (excluding business and industry);
Have completed at least sixteen (16) graduate semester credits
in reading to include coursework in each of the following areas:
Foundations of reading;
Etiology and diagnosis of reading problems;
A practicum in reading; and
Research in reading.
Art Specialist
To receive an endorsement to teach art, a person must:
Complete the following required testing, if you do not hold a current,
valid license from another state in this subject area:
Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators
Principles of Learning and Teaching K-6 or 7-12

testing information.
Hold a bachelors degree.
Have completed three (3) semester credits in a course of study
regarding parental involvement and family engagement.
Have completed:
Twenty-two (22) semester credits of professional education.
Thirty-Six (36) semester credits in the principles of fine and applied arts
Library/ Media Specialist
To receive an endorsement as a school library media
specialist, a person must:
Have a valid elementary, middle school or junior high school,
secondary or special teaching license, (excluding a business and
industry license)
Have completed a program for school library media specialists
which has been approved by the Board or a regional accrediting
association;
Hold a masters or more advanced degree in library science, with
specialization in school librarianship, from a school accredited by
the American Library Association;
Have completed twenty-one (21) semester credits in various
subjects.
Physical Education Specialist
To receive an endorsement to teach physical education, a
person must:
Complete: Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators and Praxis
Content Area Test
Hold a bachelor's degree
Have completed an approved program of preparation for
teaching physical education in kindergarten through grade 12
Have completed forty-two (42) semester credits which must
include various course work
Twenty-two (22) semester credits in professional education
Educational Computer Strategist
To receive an endorsement to teach computer-based
applications, a person must:
Hold an elementary, middle school/junior high, secondary or
special license.
Have completed a program which has been approved by the
Board for teaching computer-based applications or
Twelve (12) semester credits which must include:
Educational issues relating to computers;
Methods for teaching the integration of technology with curriculum;
Methods for teaching computer applications or instruction in at least
three (3) various application packages.
School Counselor
To receive an endorsement as a school counselor, a person
must:
Complete: Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators and Praxis Content Area
Test
Complete three (3) semester credits in a course of study regarding parental
involvement and family engagement.
Must hold a masters or more advanced degree in school counseling; or
Must hold a specialty credential as a National Certified School Counselor issued
by the National Board for Certified Counselors
Must hold a masters or more advanced degree with a major in counseling
conferred by a regionally accredited college or university and meet the
additional requirements noted below
Must hold a masters or more advanced degree conferred by a regionally
accredited college or university and have at least two (2) years of teaching
experience or at least two (2) years of school counseling experience and meet
the additional requirements noted below
School Psychologist
To receive an endorsement as a school psychologist, a
person must:
Complete three (3) semester credits in a course of study
regarding parental involvement and family engagement;
Hold a certificate as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist
issued by the National School Psychology Certification System of
the National Association of School Psychologists;
Hold a graduate degree with preparation in school psychology;
A. Have earned sixty (60) semester graduate credits from the
required areas, and if necessary optional areas (See NAC 391.317):
Have completed practicum and a minimum of a one-thousand (1000)
hour internship in school psychology.
Music Specialist
To receive an endorsement to teach music, a person must:
Complete: Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators, Principles of
Learning and Teaching K-6 or 7-12 and Praxis Content Area Test.
Hold a bachelors degree
Have completed three (3) semester credits in a course of study
regarding parental involvement and family engagement;
Have completed a program for teaching music approved by the
Board;
Have completed:
Twenty-two (22) semester credits of professional education
Thirty-Six (36) semester credits in the foundations of music
School Administrator
To receive an endorsement as an administrator of a school,
a person must:
Hold a valid elementary, middle school/ junior high, secondary or
special teaching license;
Hold a masters degree;
Have completed three (3) years of teaching experience in
accredited K-12 schools;
Have completed at least twenty-four (24) semester hours of
graduate courses in the administration of a school, including
other miscellaneous course work.
