Reflection
From 15th June 2015 to 16th June 2015, I had carried out my workshop activity, Action
song and Soundscape in SK Batu 14 and SK Batu 7. During the process of teaching the pupils,
I learnt to be more animated and realized the importance of drilling.
Firstly, I learnt to be more animated in my instructions. I realized that giving instruction
verbally was not enough as pupils did not fully understand the message. For example, when
asking the pupils, have you heard this song before, my group members showed the action of
palm wide opened and placed it at the side of our ear to emphasize the word heard. When we
accompanied the action with verbal instruction for the second time, we realized that more pupils
answered the questions and this shows that non-verbal communication are effective tools to
enhance pupils learning and understanding.
Secondly, I learnt that it is important to drill pupils step by step before allowing them to
practice on their own. For example, my group members showed the song lyrics and asked the
pupils to repeat after us line by line and paused at words that were difficult to pronounce like
had and we made the pupils repeat the word for a few times before continuing reading the
other line. Before that, we assumed that the pupils might know how to read the song lyrics
themselves since they are Year 5 and Year 6 pupils but after asking a few questions, we
realized that we should guide the pupils from the beginning and thus, drilling is an essential step
to help pupils build their foundation.
