Song

Song title
Cool Kids

Artist
Echosmith

Genre
Pop Rock

What are the conventions of music videos from this genre?

Most music videos of Pop Rock bands are focused around them performing the song
with shots of narrative in between. In the narratives, the band normally play them, the
narrative itself is normally based on one of the members experiences, e.g. drugs,
relationships or social statues. Using past experiences means the video is more
relatable to the target audience (teenagers/ young-adults), this makes the audience
more connected to the song.
The clothes the artist wear are normally casual, mainly jeans and T-shirts, they are
more colourful then in rock music videos, but less revealing than in pop music
videos. The general feel of the music videos is relaxed; this is shown by the artists
facial expressions.

How are you going to meet these conventions in your video?

Style (in-concert and as live footage; animation (stop motion, digital); interpretative; narrative;
impressionist; surrealist; pastiche; parody; referencing; homage)

I will stick to these conventions by keeping to the idea of a narrative with sections of
close ups on the artists performing the song. I will do this by having close ups on the
actresses face when shes lip syncing, this will be related to the narrative as the
actress with be wearing the clothes from the narrative, for example clothes that makes
her look like a geek.
I will also use the same conventional main clothes of casual jeans and t-shirt.

Costume

The costumes I will be using are stereotypes of the main groups in teenage life, this includes
geek, relaxed, suit, emo, no bodies and popular.

For the emo costume I will be using black coloured clothes, a black hoodie and a black
dress, I will also be using black make up with black lipstick and black eye shadow.
For the suit costume I will be using a black pencil skirt with a white shirt and blazer, this will
give a professional look which is very different to the other costumes.
For the no body costume the aim is to make the actress blend into the crowned, this means
no variation to normal people, so a hoodie, jeans and a top with minimal makeup.
For the popular costume I will use a red dress and high heels, with a new hair style and a lot
of makeup to try and show that the girl is trying too hard.
The relaxed costume will be just some trackies and a baggy hoodie with no makeup. I want
this costume to look like there was no effort given by the person.

Lighting
I will be using natural lighting for some of the music video as I will be filming outside,
however for the most of the music video I will be using artificial lighting to being focus on the
actress when shes performing.

Locations
65 Elizabeth Road.
I will use this location for the bedroom scenes.
The Henley College
I will use this location to film when scenes with a group of people will be needed. I choose
this location as I needed a relatable lactation which also made the idea of a group of people
being in the same area every day more realistic.

Shot types
Narrative/ impressionist

Research
What music videos have you watched to research your genre?
I have watched the original music video for Cool Kids, as well as covers of the song
to understand the meaning more by seeing what other people have thought the
meaning is.
I have also watched other music videos from other artists that are in the same genre,
for example Coldplay and Imagine dragons.

How have these videos influenced the decisions made? Include screen shots of the key
influences

This video helped me decided to use mostly narrative for my msuc video as this
technique creates a stronger msuic video which is more gripping and intresting
for the viewer.

Throughout my research I found that most of the videos made for Cool Kids had
the same storyline of a teeanger which was not okey with her socail statue so
began to change herself to fit in, to only realise she was happier being herself, I
willl use this idea in my music video.

Lyrics
She sees them walking in a straight line, that's not really her
style
They all got the same heartbeat, but hers is falling behind.

Nothing in this world could ever bring them down

Yeah, they're invincible and she's just in the background
And she says
I wish that I could be like the cool kids cause all the cool kids,
they seem to fit in

I wish that I could be like the cool kids, like the cool kids

He sees them talking with a big smile, but they haven't got a
clue
Yeah, they're living the good life, can't see what he is going
through
They're driving fast cars, but they don't know where they're
going
In the fast lane, living life without knowing
And he says

I wish that I could be like the cool kids cause all the cool kids,
they seem to fit in
I wish that I could be like the cool kids, like the cool kids

I wish that I could be like the cool kids cause all the cool kids,
they seem to get it
I wish that I could be like the cool kids, like the cool kids

And they said

I wish that I could be like the cool kids cause all the cool kids,
they seem to fit in
I wish that I could be like the cool kids, like the cool kids
I wish that I could be like the cool kids cause all the cool kids,
they seem to fit in
I wish that I could be like the cool kids, like the cool kids
I wish that I could be like the cool kids cause all the cool kids,
they seem to get it
I wish that I could be like the cool kids, like the cool kids

Meaning of the song

Does the song have a meaning? If so, what is it?

The meaning behind the song is that you shouldnt change yourself to fit in with the
other people, as you wont enjoy yourself if youre not being yourself. This is a simple
meaning however it is very relatable to the teenage audience.

How will your visuals relate to the song? (Illustrate, Amplify or Disjuncture)

I will show the meaning of the song by amplifying the idea of changing yourself to fit in, I will
do this by using a verity of stereotype clothes to show someone changing style rapidly to try
and find a style which gets her friends. She will then decide to be herself and return to
wearing what she wants to wear instead of what is thinks they would like her to wear.
