TITLE/TYPE OF ACTIVITY or LESSON
WINTER WRITING WORKSHOP
CONTEXT OF LESSON
In recent weeks the children have been writing about what they like to do, where they
like to go, or free write where they write about anything using their sight words. Since it
is winter, they love to talk about snowmans and being outside. They also love to draw
and color.
OBJECTIVES AND ASSESSMENT
Developmental Objectives
Assessment
1. The students will write a
sentence or two using two or
more sight words.
I will note if the child can write their sentences
without my help. If they need my help I will
direct their attention to the word board with all
the sight words. I will note if the child can choose
the right sight words form the poster board and
be able to write them in their sentences. If they
need help I will ask them to sound that word out
first, then show them on the board. All of the
above information will be recorded on the
attached data collection instrument
2. The students will draw a
picture, representing their
sentence(s).
I will note if the students draw a picture after
they have written their sentences. I will ask them
what their picture is of and see if it relates to
their sentence.
Learning Objectives
1. The students will be
able to describe the
pictures that they have
created about winter.
I will note whether or not the student is drawing a
picture related to the theme of winter. If the student is
drawing something off topic, I will provide examples
and ideas of what he or she could draw instead with
winter props. I will make sure that the students know
that the sentence will match the picture.

PROCEDURE
Preparation of
learning
environment: Jessica
and I will start setting up
at 2pm. We will make
sure our table has
enough seat. We will put
the sight word poster in
the middle of the table as
well as pencils, crayons,
and markers. We will put
the sheet of paper with
lines and a blank space
for drawing at each chair.
We will put or
instruction card in the
center of the table as
well.
Engagement and introduction of the lesson- The students will come in and
sit on the carpet for further directions. We will turn out the light a couple times to
get their attention. We will start by saying Today we have a special workshop for
you guys. Both Mr. Dayton and Mrs. Yoders class will participate in three
stations The first one is the Winter Writing Workshop with myself and Ms.
Jessica. Then Jessica and I will briefly explain our station, and the other
practicum students will briefly explain theirs. Then we will group both classes
into three sections, and have them get up and move their one group at a time.
Implementation of the lesson- When our first group gets there we will say,
Before you touch anything in the center of the table, what are some things you
guys like to do in the winter? We will have 2-3 students share after they raise
their hand. Then we will say, Okay now we are going to all take a pencil and
write a sentence about what we like to do during the winter, using our sight
words here on the poster board. We would like you to use 2-3 sight words from
the board. If you need help ask one of us. Once you are done writing and we have
come over to check it, you may draw a picture that explains what you wrote using
the crayons, colored pencils or markers.
Closure- After they had finished their picture when there is about 2 minutes left
at that station we will again ask 2-3 students to talk about their picture and share
with the group the sight words they used. After we will have each student clean
up their space by putting their utensils away, and writing their names on their
papers. We will collect their activity and keep it till the end of the day where they
will be able to bring them home. Jessica and I will then tell them which station to
go to next and direct them there when the time is up.
Clean-up When it is about 2 minutes left at the station we will have the
students individually put away their crayons, pencils, colored pencils, or markers
back in the center of the table. They will hand us their assignment and wait
quietly at their seat for further instruction.
DIFFERENTIATION
I understand that some children will not be able to write a sentence using 3 of the sight
words. When that happens I will allow them to use as many as possible. Some students
will be able to use more than 2 or 3 sight words, therefore I will have a poster full of
words for them to use. I will be there for encouragement and to assist children who
have trouble sounding out words for their sentence. The students may not be able to
think of a word to use to describe winter, therefore I will have winter props there to give
them some ideas.
WHAT COULD GO WRONG WITH THIS LESSON AND WHAT WILL YOU
DO ABOUT IT?
The students may have trouble sharing the crayons. I will make sure to provide enough
for everyone to use the crayons needed for their drawings. The students may argue over
using markers, etc. so we will make sure there is enough for everyone. The students may
become distracted so we will try our best to explain the instructions fully.
