FICTION AND ITS
ELEMENTS
         What is Fiction?
It is literature in the form of
    prose, especially short
    stories and novels that
    describes imaginary events
    and people.
      Elements of Fiction:
           1. CHARACTERS
Characters are to whom the events in the
story happen. They are the people in the
story that guide you through the plot and
setting as you explore them and conflicts,
among other elements, in the story.
 2. Minor Character – usually
serves a certain purpose to move
a plot, but is not as developed and
  explores as the major character.
Examples: Still in Noli Me Tangere,
  Capitan Tiago, Doña Victorina,
  and brothers Crispin and Basilio
  are minor characters.
   3. Flat (Simple) Character – are easily
recognized by your “emotional eye”; they
usually constructed around a single idea or
    quality
          .
   Examples:
       > the smart-alecky child
       > the weird neighbour
       > the gay best friend
Flat characters want only one simple thing:
● Sisa wanted her children and
● Doña Victorina wanted social acceptance
   4. Round (Complex) Character – have the
capacity to surprise you in a convincing and even
inevitable way. They are richer, deeper, more
    complex, more mysterious, and more
    unpredictable than flat characters.
 Examples:
Round characters want something complicated:
    > Crisostomo Ibarra did not just want revenge
after his father was denied a Catholic burial; he also
wanted to fight against social injustice in the country
under the Spanish rule.
    > Padre Salve, who was said to be strict and
would not do anything that will dishonour his
reputation, but was secretly lusting after Maria Clara!
               ACTIVITY
Write on your notebook at least 2
  major characters and 3 minor
  characters with their descriptions
and roles in a short story. You will
use them in your final performance
  task.
 For your final performance task,
you are going to write a short
fiction with 300 to 500 words.
