Introduction:
While other people have been in school, ▪ Blank screen
I’ve been at home. I’ve still had the ▪ B-roll of me with revision books,
education I needed, even though I’ve never laptop (learning) (Own footage)
been in the system. And all I’ve known is
the structure of a carefree system with an
organised schedule.
But what is home education? Why is it ▪ Title slates
rising in popularity in the UK? And why is ▪ Questions
home education deemed as one of the ‘last
resorts’ for some parents?

Information:
As someone who was home educated, I ▪ B-roll of me doing work/home
know that homeschooling now is very movie (Own footage)
different to how I was educated from a ▪ Flip through h education books
young age. I was home educated from the (Own footage)
age of 5 to 17, taught by my mother who
also schooled my three older siblings with
an American Christian curriculum.
But everyone has their own approach to ▪ Different school books/curriculum

I believe that home educators definitely get ▪ B-roll of homeschoolers socialising
the best out of socialising and interacting (in different environments) (Own

opportunity to choose who we mixed with,
unlike school where you are put into
classrooms and groups that you may not fit
into.
In 2016 to 2017, there were over 45
thousand students that were being home- ▪ Figures (Own footage)
educated in the UK. And over 29 thousand
of those home educators were registered
with their local authorities. These numbers
aren’t to be confused with the US, topping
up to 1.5 million home-educators in 2010
to 2011.

There’s a huge dynamic between home-
education vs school. They are two
completely different approaches and ▪ Homeschool vs School (video or

There are some countries where home- ▪ Countries where it’s illegal (flags)
education is illegal, but they make up for
that by having a better education system.
Countries like Germany, Sweden, Denmark,
Switzerland, and there are many more.

Most home-educators will home educate ▪ Different religions (Archive footage)
because they want a religious approach. ▪ Special needs/Learning difficulties
While others choose this due to their child symptoms and b-roll of children and

the child can get the help that they need.

After speaking to these families, I have
found out why these specific families

home-educate. I know that just Sophia feels ▪ B-roll of families in home (Own

as one would think. And Joelle, she likes to
keep both her boys entertained with doing
activities that improve their learning and
they stay stimulated.
Now I have come to Swindon to talk to
Nathan Fields, who is a TEACH manager for
a Christian curriculum.

forced registration of all home-
educating families. Do you think this
is a realistic proposal, and if so what
impact do you think this will have?
Overview:
I understand why these parents want to ▪ B-roll from interview with Nathan,
home educate their children. Sophia Sophia and Joelle (Own footage)
wanted to give her children a Christian
education and (background?). Joelle home
educates because she wants her children to
be more involved in their learning and
experience new things. Nathan and his wife
were both home educated, so they decided
to go straight into home ed because they
were to familiar with it.
They all have valid reasons to home ▪ Children at school (Archive footage)
educate and they have all given their
children the chance to experience school.

Conclusion:
After talking to Joelle, Sophia and Nathan, I ▪ End clips of Joelle and Sophia (Own

path. But home education isn’t the only ▪ Alternatives to school – image or

You could attend a Steiner school, which is
an independent way of learning and you ▪ Steiner school (Own footage) +
attend to the age of 17. The Steiner way is (Archive footage)
teaching through play.
Another option is Montessori education.
Their way of teaching, is to isolate each
level of learning or whatever stage the ▪ Montessori education (Own
student is on. This is very hands-on footage) + (Archive footage)
mixed with collaborative play.
And the last is Small community school. In
this school, they teach their students ▪ Small community school (Own
respect, democracy and Fairness. And the footage) + (Archive footage)
students will focus on the academics,
health, social services, youth and
community.
There have been debates on whether
parents have the right to take their child ▪ Debates on TV, online, YouTube,
out of school, if it’s in the best interest of etc. (Own footage) + (Archive

Home education is still very new and is still
being adapted for everyone’s different
views, beliefs and ways of living. Home
education is growing, and the numbers will
just keep getting higher.
