Telecommunicator Realities

The duties and responsibilities of an Emergency Telecommunications Dispatcher are a vital link
between the residents of the City of Hartford and Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services
responders. These duties must always be performed in an accurate, professional and efficient
manner.

As a candidate for the position of Emergency Telecommunications Dispatcher Trainee, you


should be aware of the working conditions and responsibilities that will be required of you.

WORK SCHEDULE

 After completing your probationary period, your days off will rotate backwards one day
every twenty-eight days (e.g., Mon/ Tues off becomes Sun/Mon off). Shift assignments
are bid every three months and are awarded based seniority. You must be willing to work
such a schedule.
 You will be required to work irregular shifts during your probationary period. For example,
in the first month you may work evenings with Mondays and Tuesdays off and the next
month on the overnight shift with Wednesday and Thursday off. You will be required to
work weekends, holidays, birthdays, anniversaries and mandatory overtime.
 You may be required to rotate into any shift (Days, Evenings, or Overnights).
 You must be willing to accept last minute changes in your schedule or to work mandatory
overtime.

WORKING CONDITIONS

You will be dealing with the public, often in stressful circumstances. As such, you may be
subjected to abusive and profane language on the telephone. You must be able to deal with this
in an unemotional and professional manner and not allow their comments to affect your
performance.

 On any given shift, you may deal with a crisis situation involving someone in imminent
danger where your action may save a life. After it is resolved, you must mentally set it
aside and deal professionally with the next call, which may be as mundane as an irate
citizen complaining of a barking dog.
 You must be able to take direction from a supervisor in front of your peers without
questioning the instruction.
 You must be able to accept job performance input and possible criticism from supervisors
regarding a certain job-related action you may have taken.

 At times you will need to give up breaks and/or take your meals at your work station,
depending on shift activity and/or staffing levels
 You will work at a console that restricts your movements to that area and/or requires
long period of sitting.
 You will be processing calls that require prompt and accurate action to prevent or
minimize loss of property and human life.
 You must be able to simultaneously receive, evaluate and input information, and then
respond immediately and appropriately.
 If you are a smoker, you must be prepared to work long periods of time without a
cigarette.
 You will work under constant surveillance that records all telephone calls, radio
communications, and audio and video of the Communication Center as a whole.
 You must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
 You will be required to become proficient in the duties of call intake, Police Dispatch, Fire
Dispatch, EMS Dispatch and NCIC/COLLECT.
