ABSTRACT
The topography survey was conducted, for preparing the lay out plan of Malabar
Botanical Garden and Institute for Plant science. Survey was conducted using
advanced survey equipment’s like Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS)
and Total Station.
The DGPS surveys were conducted to set up a permanent Station at the premises from
80.10.2018 to 13.10.2018. After processing the data collected, temporary traverse points were
fixed using DGPS from 13 November 2018 to 15 November 2018. Physical features were
collected using Total Station during 19 November 2018 to 13 November 2018.
Horizontal and Vertical control stations were established using DGPS and the traverse line is
run connecting control stations. If any discrepancy is observed beyond the permissible error of 1
in 10000, the traversing is repeated and new temporary Bench marks are obtained. All the
control stations set up for horizontal control were connected with levels. The closing error was
within the permissible limits of 6 K, where K is distance in km and the error is in mm. The
permissible error was then distributed using length-weighted distribution to get the exact
elevation of a particular benchmark.
Using the horizontal and vertical control points established, accurate data in the digital format
in terms of Northing (Y), Easting (X) and Elevation (Z) co-ordinates for all breaks in terrain such
as ridges and ditches was collected. All natural and manmade features such as buildings, poly
houses, ground levels, plantations, boundary of land etc. were captured during the survey. A
spatial co-ordinate system was followed for referencing all data points. Each data point was
referenced by x, y and z co-ordinates, the first two representing the horizontal locations and the
third elevation.
The Total land area for Malabar Botanical Garden and Institute for Plant
sciences 37.43 acres.
Main GPS station point on the Hill top and eight reference points are established for future
use. Details of the reference points and the permanent GPS station are given in table 1.
