Common App 2

A social media post sparked a period of personal growth for the author by teaching them that situations which won't matter in five years are not worth worrying about for more than five seconds. This helped the author learn to control their emotions and not react to unnecessary remarks from their little sister, allowing situations to "flow right by me like a babbling stream." As a result, the author now lives more peacefully, is less stressed, calmer, and can laugh about things that previously would have upset them.

Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal

growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

In the 21st century, teenagers are usually scrolling through social media at
any given moment. One time when I was scrolling through social media I came
across a post with a very strong message. The message I came across read as
follows, “If it will not matter in five years, do not worry about it for more than five
seconds.” As an adolescent, instinctively, I act on impulse based on current
emotions. However, as soon as I read that post I realized how much stress and
anger I could avoid in the present.
For the most part I am able to keep my emotions in check. I typically never
let them get the best of me, but there are some moments where I cannot hold them
back. Most of the time it is from unnecessary remarks from my little sister, and
although it will not matter after a few seconds, I would let it get to me. Although,
after reading the post above I began to change my way of thinking, and after
countless hours of mental toughness I was able to just let what my little sister said
to me slide. I no longer let my emotions run free and bash her right back. Now I sit
back and either stay silent or reply with a dry, “Okay.” No longer do I entertain or
fuel her remarks, they just flow right by me like a babbling stream in the spring.
After I realized that not every situation deserves a reaction, I have begun to
live much more peacefully than I did before. I do not stress as much, I am calmer,
and I can even laugh about things that I would not have laughed at before. I am so
grateful that I came across that post whilst scrolling through social media one day
because it has drastically improved my life.
