UNIVERSITY OF CAGAYAN VALLEY
COLLEGE OF MARITIME EDUCATION
For a successful career, every student needs knowledge,
confidence, academic and technical skills, career opportunities and
social skills. To get these benefits college education is important.
The importance of college education can be determined by the role it
plays in our life.
Marine engineering is the study of the design, development,
innovation, production and maintenance of the types of equipment used
at sea (e.g. rigs and other floating structures) and on board sea
vessels such as boats and ships. Bachelor of Science in Marine
Engineering is a four year degree program that aims to provide
students with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to
operate and maintain the different machineries installed in marine
vessels, including the propulsion plant, adjunct and auxiliary
machinery, electrical and refrigeration systems. This degree program
is a classroom-based frontal instructions as well as hands-on
trainings usually conducted in special laboratories and a one-year
apprenticeship onboard. Pursuing Maritime Engineering course is a
smart option for people with different kind of skills. A specific
focus in Marine engineering studies is how engineering principles
apply to seafaring vessels and oceanic features.
For the School Year 2018-2019 there are 516 Marine Engineering
Students enrolled at the University of Cagayan Valley; 272 first year
students; 29 second year students; 154 third year students; and 61 on-
the-job Marine Engineering students. This investigative report study
UNIVERSITY OF CAGAYAN VALLEY

will gather information about motivations and expectation of the
Marine Engineering students from first year to third year level.
The study intends to determine the demographic information,
motivations, and expectations of students of the University Of Cagayan
Valley in pursuing Maritime Engineering course.
The researchers conclude that dreaming to become chief engineer
greatly motivates the Marine Engineering students in taking BSMare
course. Having a high salary is the most influencing factors in taking
up BSMare course because having high salary can lead to a better life
that can help us to build a better future.(Jimelyn Strife, 2014)
Marine students graduated from public schools have significantly
higher chance of being influenced by people in choosing the school and
degree program and they also have significantly higher degree of
interest towards the Maritime program compared to those graduated from
private schools. If they can practice the profession right and they
have the eagerness to make their dreams come true, there is an
assurance that they can come across all boarders. (Carlos L. Aguado,
et al. 2015)
The questionnaire was the main instrument used in the data
gathering process. The questionnaire composed of three parts. Part I
was designed for the demographic profile of the respondents which
include address, age, sex, and year level. Part II was designed to

gather information about the motivation of the students in
pursuing the degree program. And part III was designed to gather
information on
the expectation of the Maritime Engineering students based on
academic, professional and social development.
The data gathered from the respondents through the use of
questionnaires were carefully tabulated, analyzed and interpreted. The
data were expressed and presented qualitatively and quantitatively.
The statistical measures used were the frequency count, percentage and
weighted mean.
1. Range of Weighted Mean Values and its Description of Motivation
Factors.
Range of Mean Quantitative Qualitative
4.21 to 5.00 5 Extremely Helpful
3.41 to 4.20 4 Very Helpful
2.61 to 3.40 3 Fairly Helpful
1.81 to 2.60 2 Not very Helpful
1 to 1.80 1 Not At All
2. Range of Weighted Mean Values and its Description of Motivation
Factors.

The age profile of the respondents, almost half of the
respondents are ranging from 20-21 years old at the time the survey
was conducted.
The genders Profile of the respondents, the result show that the
100% of the respondents were male. As of school Year 2018-2019, the
number of first year students enrolled is 272 of which is 262 males
and 10 females; and third year students, 154 of which is 153 males and
1 female. By just looking on the number enrolled stated above, the
majority of the students enrolled in Bachelor of Marine Engineering is
male. There are 441 male students out of 455 students. Third Year
students got the highest percentage of the respondents, third year
students got the highest percentage of the respondents. The results
above corroborated that the respondents were randomly selected.
Career Flexibility and Job Security with a weighted mean of 4.59
was considered by the respondents as the strongest driving force why
they decided to pursue Maritime Education – Marine Engineering. This
is followed by dreams of a better future with a weighted mean of 4.39
which indicates that they were motivated to pursue the degree program
was to achieve a greater future. One of the most important factors
UNIVERSITY OF CAGAYAN VALLEY
COLLEGE OF MARITIME EDUCATION
when pursuing college degree is your plan for the future,
your passion and to whom your success is for.
The prevailing item is providing advancement in the field
enrolled in with a weighted mean 4.49. This explains that the
respondents want to hone their skills in the degree program they
enrolled in order to become competitive in doing their job.
Providing more opportunities for career selection with the
highest weighted mean value of 4.34 attracts attention of the
respondents.
Contributing to social development got the highest frequency. As
a centerpiece of the world economy, the marine industry’s influence iS
felt in shipping, trade, recreation, and defense. Marine Engineers are
the people who keep it afloat – both literally and figuratively. Every
country and person on earth is affected by the prevailing trends in
the vast sector.

CONCLUSION
Academic learning institutions contribute to the pursuit of career
goals of the students. Their motivations hold them on to finish their
studies with some future expectations. This inference validates the
theoretical underpinning of the Investigative Research Report on the
Motivations and Expectations of the Students of the University of the
Cagayan Valley (UCV) in Pursuing Maritime Education – Marine
Engineering. Career Flexibility and Job Security with was considered
as the strongest motivating factor why they decided to pursue Maritime
Education – Marine Engineering. Providing advancements in the field
enrolled in, providing more opportunities for career selection, and
contributing to social development are the expectations of the
respondents after finishing the Marine Engineering Course.
People pursue goals in life that led to success and positive
transition. This is achieved through hard work and passion of what you
really love to do. This investigative report will provide a better
result if all or even 90% of the Marine Engineering will be involved.
