Section Four: Alignment to Curriculum & Professional Standards

Introduction

Section four of the MSED portfolio is the Alignment to Curriculum & Professional

Standards, which connect to the curriculum and professional standards to the artifacts that were

listed in section three. For each artifact provided in the previous section, this section will allow

the reader to understand the importance of the artifact as the professional standards and

curriculum are broken down.

The professional standards are applied to ensure that every student is provided with an

appropriate and fair education, and that teachers abide by the code(s) of ethics in the classroom,

in the school and beyond. Though section three provided a series of artifacts developed during

my studies at Medaille College along with curriculum and professional standards, section four

will address the alignment between the artifacts and the curriculum and professional standards,

along with my ability and knowledge as a teacher candidate. A graphic organizer in the form of a

chart will depict the professional and curriculum standards to showcase my best teaching

practices, pedagogical knowledge and my ability to be an inspirational and supportive teacher

candidate.

Curriculum & Professional Educational Standards

INTASC Standards.

The Interstate New Teacher Assessment Support Consortium Standards (INTASC)

focuses on the improvement of student achievement through the efficacy of best teaching

practices. The INTASC Standards comprise of four sections that include ten standards that

further encompass three color coded categories relating to essential knowledge, performance and

disposition.
The four sections contained in the INTASC are The Learner and Learning, Content,

Instructional Practice, and Professional Responsibility. The artifacts listed in section three are

connected to the INTASC Standards:

Artifact #1: School Violence Prevention and Intervention/Identification and Reporting of

Child Abuse and Maltreatment Certificates

Artifact #2: Author Study

Artifact #3: Pecha Kucha Presentation

Artifact #5: Science Lesson Plan

Artifact #6: Math Lesson Plan

Artifact #7: Unit Plan

Artifact #8: Literacy Assessment

NYS Code of Ethics for Educators.

The New York State of Ethic for Educators entails a set of principles and expectations to

guide teaching practices in a classroom and encouraging teaching professional excellence. The

principals within this standard were developed by educators and aim to highlight the importance

of professional disposition. The following artifacts from Section Three are connected to the NYS

Code of Ethics for Educators:

Ontario Teacher Ethical Standards.

The Ontario Teacher Ethical Standards are a set of principles that describe the main goals

of individuals working in the field of education. The principles and standards work as a guide for

Ontario teachers. The ethical standards are divided into four main goals: a shared vision among

teaching professionals identifying values, the skills and knowledge necessary for educators and

guide professional actions and judgement and promote a common language among teaching

professionals. The following artifacts from Section Three are connected to the Ontario Teacher

Ethical Standards:

P-12 NYS Common Core Learning Standards (ELA, Math and Social Studies).

The P-12 New York State Common Core Learning Standards for ELA, Math, and Social

Studies include various expectations and standards that educators must practice for students. The

purpose of these standards is to help students prepare for their post-secondary education. As the

standards are to guide and assist students in the classroom, they also work to assist teaching

professionals create a fair environment while teaching. The following artifacts from Section
Three are connected to the NYS Common Core Learning Standards for ELA, Math, and Social

Studies:

Artifact #8: Literacy Assessment

NYS Learning Standards.

The New York State Education Department entails a list of expectations, known as

standards, that focuses on student learning by providing an appropriate and fair education. The

curriculum and instruction curricular is developed by each local school district but all use the

established standards. The following artifacts from Section Three are connected to the NYS

Learning Standards:

Ontario Ministry of Education Curriculum Expectation.

The Ontario Ministry of Education Expectation was developed by the Ministry of

Education. To ensure that the Ontario curriculum remains developmentally appropriate for

students from Kindergarten to Grade 12, the standards and expectations are reviewed regularly.

For each grade level, the curriculum standards are set into place to guide skills and knowledge

which are expected of students in all subjects. The following artifacts from Section Three are

connected to the following Ontario Ministry of Education Curriculum Expectations:

DOE Claims & CAEP Standards.

The Division of Education (DOE) of Medaille College developed a set of claims which

are viewed as a set of commitment which focus on the quality of graduates who are

professionally ready and competent to become school teachers The following artifacts from

Section Three are connected to the DOE Claims & CAEP Standards:

International Society for Technology Education for Teachers and Students (ISTE).

The International Society for Technology Education for Teachers and Students was put

into place for educators to create effective classrooms. The purpose of the ISTE Standards is to

assist student learning and increase their skills and knowledge in a digital classroom. Teachers

are encouraged to utilize the ISTE Standards in their lessons to instill technological skills and

knowledge in students. The following artifacts from Section Three are connected to the ISTE

standards:

Council for Exceptional Children (ECE)

The Special Education Professional Ethical Principles and Practice Standards (CEC)

entail a list of practices and principles that focuses on the diverse needs of students with

exceptionalities and their families. The following artifacts from Section Three are connected to

the Special Education Professional Ethical Principles and Practice Standards:

Alignment to Curriculum & Professional Standards Chart

The chart provided below serves as an overview of the numerous professional standards

and curriculum as they connect to the various artifacts, I provided in Section Three of my

portfolio. The chart demonstrates my best teaching practices as a teacher candidate and my

pedagogical competencies.

Conclusion

Section Four of the MSED Capstone Portfolio Project highlighted the various curriculum

and professional standards as they connect to the chosen artifacts from Section Three, while

demonstrating my competencies along with my best teaching practices. This section also served

its’ purpose in providing an overview of the standards as they connected to the artifacts in an

organized fashion. Section Five will complete my MSED Capstone Portfolio as I reflect on my

experience throughout the portfolio and my educational experiences in the MSED program at

Medaille College.
