Mossy Jacket
O CTO B ER 20, 2017

Today was a rainy day so I stayed all day in house

and finished my Mossy Jacket. The bad part is that I
couldn’t take pictures outside and it seems like will
rain all next week too, so I promise I will be back
with outside photos after the weather will let me :))

For this jacket I used a very easy stitch called moss

stitch. I liked how the name sound, so I called the
jacket after it.

The pattern of this stitch is one chain, skip one, 1

single crochet in the next stitch. Pretty easy isn’t it?

So grab the yarn, hook, scissors, sewing needle,

measuring tape and let’s begin.

For my size of jacket (S) I used 700 grams

of Stylecraft Special Knitting DK.

The color I used is Mustard.

I worked with 2 strands of yarn because a chunky

Yarn of 5-6 mm thickness is need it. I choose to work
with Special DK because there are so many colors
available. The needle size was 5.5 mm.

Now let start.

For the back

Grab the measuring tape and make some
measurement before start.

Measure your hips. Divide the length in half and

add 3 more cm. This will be the base of your
back side.
Measure your waist. As for the hips divide the
length in half and add 3 more cm
Measure the length between yours underarms
Measure the length between yours shoulders
Measure the hight from your underarm to your
shoulder
Think about how long you want to be your
jacket and measure the high from the bottom of
the jacket and after you pass the hips.

To be easier make a sketch

Now that you have all measurements, make a gauge

with the yarn and the hook you choose, just to know
how many stitches you will need. For a square of 10
cm I had 14 stitches and 14 rows in moss stitch.

Chain the number of stitches that you need. I had

64+2 stitches.

Row 1

Skip the 3rd stitch and make * 1 single crochet in the

next, chain 1. Repeat from * to the end of the row.
Chain 2 and turn.

Row 2

1 single crochet in the first space chain of the

previous row, *chain 1, 1 single crochet in the next
space. Repeat from * to the end of the row.

Row 3 – 20 (or as many rows as you need until you

pass your hips area and you have to begin shaping
your waist) repeat row 2.

Row 21

Begin with a decrease. Decrease with 1 single crochet

then continue with the moss stitch to the end of the
row.

Row 22

Repeat row 21.

Row 23

Make a straight row without decreasing.

This is how we shaping the waist area of our jacket. If

you want you can keep it straight from the bottom
to the underarms.

Repeat rows 21-22 until you get the length

measured for your waist. Then make 2 rows straight.
I decreased until row 31.

Row 32, 33

Straight rows in moss stitch.

Row 34

Now we begin to increase. Increase with 1 single

crochet at the beginning of the row then continue
with moss stitch pattern all over the row.

Row 35

Repeat the row 34 ( we make the increase on the

other side)

Row 36

Keep it straight

Repeat rows 34-36 until you get the length between

your underarms. I had 11 rows. My last row with an
increase was row 44.

Row 45 – 56 (or as many rows as you need to get to

underarms) make straight rows.

Row 57

We will make the arm hole. Skip 6 stitches (slip

stitch) then continue with moss stitch until you have
6 stitches left. Chain 2 and turn

Row 58

Keep it straight in moss stitch (without the 6

stitches from the beginning and from the en of the
row)

Repeat row 58 for as many rows as you need to get

the high between your underarms and your
shoulders. I had 26 rows. So in total I had 84 rows
from bottom to the end of the back side.
Front left side

Fold up the back. This is the shape of the front sides.

Divide in half the number of stitches that you had for
the back and add 10 more. This is the number of
stitches for the front side.

On the front sides we also will make a pocket hole.

Chain the number of stitches that you need plus 2. I

had 42+2

Row 1-16

Keep it straight in moss stitch

Row 17

Now we will start to work the pocket hole

Make 14 stitches in moss stitch then chain 7 stitches
and turn. Now we only work with half of the front
side. We will call it a).

Row 18-20 a)

Keep it straight in moss stitch

Row 21 a)

Decrease with 1 single crochet. Continue with the

moss stitch along tha a) row.

Row 22-23 a)

Keep it straight without decreasing.

Repeat rows 21-23 a) as many rows as you decreased

for the back side. Pay attention that you are working
also a pocket hole. So if you think that your pocket is
high enough, but you didn’t finish with the
decreasing rows, stop and begin to work to the other
part of the front to close the pocket hole. Then you
will continue with the decreasing, working the entire
front .

I made a video with how I made the pocket hole.

Hope will help. Is my first video so I know is not the
best but promise the next ones will be better.
So I had 33 rows from bottom until I finished the
pocket hole. I follow the decrease rows until row 30.

Row 31-33 a) keep it straight in moss stitch and cut

the yarn.

Now I start with the b) part of the front side.

So we are at row 17 b).

Insert the yarn in the next stitch of 17 a) (It will be

stitch 15) and make the moss stitch all over the row
17 b).

Row 18b – 33b keep it straight with moss stitch.

Row 34

Now is time to join the a) and b) part. This is not so

difficult. When you get to the overlap stitches just
pass the hook to both parts. So you will have 7
stitches worked together. Then continue with the
moss stitch. At row 34 I also start to increase. So in
the last stitch I made 2 single crochet then chain 1
and turn.

Row 35, 36 keep it straight

Repeat row 34-36 for as many rows as you increased

on the back side. I had 11 rows with the increase and
44 in total.

Row 45 – 56 ( or the same number of rows as on the

back side) keep it straight in moss stitch.

Row 57

Skip 6 stitches and continue with moss stitch to the

end of the row.

Row 58 – 79 keep it straight

Row 79 – 84 make only 11 stitches on the edge.

* I just make a pocket hole because I choose to put
linen pockets. If you don’t want that, just chain more
stitches instead of 7 extra that we chain for a) part.

For the right part of the front side keep the same
pattern. Just keep in mind that you also will have to
make on this side the button holes. My first button-
hole was after 30 rows and I made it by chaining 2
and skipping 2 stitches. I had 3 stitches to the edge.
Next button-hole was after 14 rows.

Sleeve

Chain the number of stitches that you need

considering how wide your sleeve want to be.

Row 1-20 keep it straight in moss stitch

Row 21

Increase with 1 single crochet at the beginning of the

row then made the moss stitch along.
Row 22

Repeat the row 21

Row 23 keep it straight

Row 24, 25 increase with 1 single crochet at the

beginning of the row.

Row 26-30 keep it straight

Row 31,32 increase with 1 single crochet at the

beginning of the tow.

Row 33, 34 keep it straight

Row 35, 36 increase with 1 single crochet at the

beginning of the row

Row 37-40 keep it straight

Row 41,42 increase with 1 single crochet at the

beginning of the row

Row 43-53 (or as many rows as you need to get the

desired length from the bottom of your sleeve to the
underarm) keep it straight.

Row 54

Decrease with 6 stitches on each side.

Row 55 keep it straight

Row 56-68 ( or as many rows as you need to get the

length from the bottom of the sleeve to your
shoulder) decrease with 1 single crochet at the
beginning of the row.

Cut the yarn and done. You just finished the sleeve.

For the other sleeve follow the same pattern.

Now that we have all parts done, is time to join them
together. Begin with back and front and then add the
sleeves.

Collar

Row 1

Put the jacket with the exterior outside. Skip 12

stitches from the neck base and insert the yarn.
Make the moss stitch until you have 12 stitches left.
Chain 2 and turn.

Row 2

Keep it straight in moss stitch

Row 3- 11 ( or as many rows as you want depending

on how high you want your collar to be) increase
with 1 single crochet at the beginning of the row.

Cut the yarn and….done. Sew the buttons and the

pockets and that’s it. If want you can add an edge ol
over. I had 1 row i single crochet.
