PAPER -1

UNIT -1 : A general introduction to Vedas and Upanishads (Dashopanishads) with special


reference to Mundakopanishad.

UNIT -2 : The two great epics (The Ramayana and The Mahabharata) - General story line of
Bala - Ayodhya and AranyaKanadas of the Ramayana.

Origin, evolution and the three stages of the development of the Mahabharata - General story line
of Vanaparva.

UNIT -3 : The Puranas - Origin and evolution of Puranas with special reference to Brahmanda-
Varaha- Markandeya- Padma- Naradiya - and Vishnu DharmottaraPuranas (with the description
of our mother land India.)

UNIT -4 : The PanvhaMahaKavyas (Five great poems) - The definition of a Mahakavya- Life,
date and works of Kalidasa, Bharavi, Sriharsha and Magha- A special study of VI Canto of
Kumarasambhava.

UNIT -5: The popular tales and Didactic fables - Origin and Evolution- with special reference
to Panchatantra of Vishnu Sharma, SimhasanaDvatrimshika of Vararuchi and Kathasaritsagara
of Somadeva.

UNIT -6 : The Historical personalities such as Basavanna, Akkamahadevi, ChatrapatiShivaji,


MaharanaPratap Singh, Akbar, Tippu Sultan, Kittur Rani Chennamma, Jhansi Lakshmi Bai. A
special sudy of life history of MaharanaPratap Singh.

GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION


(The candidate is expected to know the relevant sutras of Panini related to each
Grammatical topic )

UNIT-1:Varnavichara (Alphabet in Sanskrit) -origin and pronunciation of a syllable - 14 sutras


of Panini (Fourteen Maheshwara Sutrani).

UNIT-2:Sandhis in Sanskrit -

I:Swara Sandhis: a) Savarna DeerghaSandhi; b) GunaSandhi; c) VriddhiSandhi;


d) Yan Sandhi; e) AyadiSandhi; f) PurvarupaSandhi.
II: VyanjanaSandhis: a) ShchutvaSandhi; b) JashtvaSandhi; c) ChatvaSandhi; d)
SatvaSandhi; e) AnunasikaSandhi; f) AnuswaraSandhi; g) GnamudagamaSanhi.

III: VisargaSandhi: Categories such as Visarga replaced by "sa" kara, repha, lopa,
u-kara.

UNIT-3: Declensions (ShabdaRupani) - Ajanta, Halanta, SarvanamaShabdaRupani .

UNIT-4: Numerals both cordinals and Ordinals (Sankhya and Sankhyeya 1 - 100).

UNIT-5: Verbs - intaroduction, Ten Ganas, DashaLakaras in both Parasmaipadi and


Atmanepadiwith suitable examples.

UNIT-6: Kridantas (Participles) - Vartamana (Present Participle), Bhuta (Past Participle),


ParokshaBhuta (Past Perfect Participle), Bhavishyat (Future Participle), Vidhyarthaka (Potential
Participle)in all three (3) genders-Kridantavyayas (indeclinables) - Tumunnantavyaya (Infinitive
- Ktvanta, Lyabanta(Gerunds).

UNIT-7:Synonyms(Paryayapada) and Antonyms(ViruddharthakaPada).

UNIT-8: Figures of Speech(Alankaras) – Upama (Similie), Rupaka Metaphor), Utpreksha


(Poetic Fancy), and ArthantaranyasaAlankaras.

UNIT - 1 :A brief History of Sanskrit literature; from Vedic period to 20th century
(SamskritaSahityaCharitam)

UNIT -2 :GadyaKavyas - Origin and Evolution- Three Prose works in Sanskrit : Vasavadatta of
Subandhu, Kadambari of Banabhatta and Dashakumaracharitam of Dandin. A special study of
MahashwetaVrittanta of Kadambari of Banabhatta.

UNIT -3:ChampuKavyas - Origin and evolution- A special study of Bala Kanda of Champu
Ramayana.

UNIT -4:The Sanskrit Dramas - Origin and Evolution- life and dramas of Bhasa and Kalidasa -
A special study of Balacharitam of Bhasa and AbhijnanaShakuntalam of Kalidasa.

UNIT -5 :TheSubhashitas (Witty sayings) - A general study of Subhashitas and NitiKavyas such
as ChanakyaNiti, KamandakaNiti and RajanitiRatnakara.

UNIT -6 :A brief introduction to Ancient Indian Scientific literature.

UNIT -7 : a study of contemporary literaturein the category of Drama (Gurushapam of Dr.


K.S.Nagarajan, Bangalore), Translated story of Sri R K Narayan (An Astrologer's day) and Dr.
Shivaramakrishnan(She) translated by Sri Avinashvarna and Dr. B.S.RamakrishnaRao.

UNIT -8: Life sketches of Sri BM Srikanthaiah and Prof. A R Krishna Shastry.

GAMMAR AND COMPOSITION

UNIT-1: Compounds (Samasas) - Tatpurusha, Bahuvrihi, Dvandva, Avyayibhava,


Karmadharaya and Dwigu with sub varieties alongwith examples.

UNIT-2: Karakas - Definition with all varieties.

UNIT-3 Change of Voice(Prayogah) - Active(Kartari), Passivi(Karmani), Bhave(Impersonal)


Voices.

UNIT-4: Taddhitantah (Secondary Case Affix) with examples - Pratipadika - Tara-Tama, Matup
(Possessive Suffix), Apatyarthaka, Bhavarthaka, Sambandharthaka and TaddhitaIndiclinables.

UNIT-5: Grammatical Peculiarities (VyakaranaVisheshah)

UNIT-6 Metres (Chandas) - Chandas with its Definition, Various types of Chandas such as
Anushtup, IndraVajra, UpendraVajra, Upajati, Vamshastha, Vasantatilaka, Malini, Shikhrini,
Mandakranta, Shardulavikridita, Sragdhara.

UNIT-7: Translation Exercises from English to Sanskrit and Sanskrit to English.

UNIT-8: Letter Writing (PatraLekhanam), Essay Writing and all the details of comprehension in
Sanskrit.
