Lamar Pattern

This document provides instructions for making the Lamar reversible braided scarf. The scarf is made using a k1p1 rib stitch with reversible cable patterns. It uses 3 skeins of yarn and size 13 needles. The scarf is cast on with 36 stitches and knit in repeating patterns of ribbing and cable rows that create a braided effect. When complete, the scarf is washed and blocked. The patterns allow the scarf to be worn with the cables on either side, making it reversible.

LAMAR

A REVERSIBLE BRAIDED SCARF

Finished Measurements: 6.5” x 58”- more if you block with vigour

Materials
3 skeins Cascade 109 Tweed (109 yards each) , shown in Walnut Tweed
US Size 13 needles
Cable needle
1 stitch marker (optional)

Gauge
Gauge is not important for the size of the scarf – unless you have precise dimensions in mind.
But swatch to make sure your needle/yarn combo isn’t creating too stiff a fabric. Page 2 of 3

LAMAR scarf instructions

The entire scarf is knit in a K1P1rib, with cables . This doesn’t show as ribbing
but renders the braided cables reversible. It is a very warm scarf.

Directions:

Cast on 36 stitches.
Turn to begin pattern, placing stitch marker in first stitch.
You can use this marker as reference as you knit, it will be in the right
corner of the scarf when you are knitting an odd numbered row, and
on the left side when you are knitting an even numbered row.
Alternately, I use the long tail cast on and leave a 2” tail in this corner
for the same purpose.

Begin CHUNKY REVERSIBLE BRAID (below) stitch until you are


almost out of yarn or have reached the length scarf you desire.
Cast off all stitches in K stitch.

Finishing
Weave in ends of yarn. Dampen and block gently, careful not to
flatten the braids.

CHUNKY REVERSIBLE BRAID , over 12 rows:


Row 1-4: *K1P1* repeat across all stitches

Row 5: * Place 6 stitches on cable needle, hold in front. K1, P1, 3


times, in the next 6 stitches from your left needle. Then K1P1 , 3
times in the 6 stitches on the cable needle. * Repeat * 2 more times
to end. You’ll have 3 crossed cables.

Row 6-10: *K1P1* repeat across all stitches

Row 11: K1P1 , 3 times in the first 6 stitches. * Place next 6 stitches
on cable needle and hold in back. K1P1, 3 times, in the next 6
stitches on your left needle. Then K1P1 3 times in the 6 stitches on
the cable needle.* repeat from * one more time.
K1P1, 3 times, in the last 6 stitches to end. You’ll have 2 crossed
cables.

Row 12: *K1P1* repeat across all stitches
