Sizes:
18”/46 cm (19.25”/49 cm) circumference x
8.5”/21.5 cm (9”/23 cm) tall.

Materials:
Cascade Yarns® Pacific® Chunky
60% Acrylic / 40% Superwash Merino Wool
100 g (3.5 oz)/120 yds (110 m)
2 skein of #107 (Mulled Grape) for both sizes
US 8 (5 mm)/16” circular knitting needles
US 10 (6 mm) Set of 5 DPNs or longer circular
needle for magic loop
US 10 (6 mm)/16” circular knitting needles or
size to obtain gauge
Yarn Needle
1 Stitch Marker
3 3/8” Pom Pom maker
Cable Needle

Gauge:
15 sts x 24 rnds = 4” (10cm) Blocked, in 1x1 rib with US 8 (5mm) knitting needles.
16 sts x 23 rnds = 4” (10 cm) Blocked, in cable pattern with US 10 (6 mm) knitting needles.

Abbreviations:
CO = Cast On
K = Knit
P = Purl
PM = Place Marker
St(s) = Stitch(es)
Rnd(s) = Round(s)
K2tog = Knit 2 stitches together
M1 = Make 1 stitch: (K1, K1tbl) in same stitch. 1 stitch increased.
½LPC = 1 over 2 Left Purl Cross: Slip 1 stitch onto to cable needle, hold to front, P2,
K1 from cable needle.
½RPC = 1 over 2 Right Purl Cross: Slip 2 stitches to cable needle, hold to back, K1,
P2 from cable needle.
Brim:
With smaller circular needles and long tail CO method, CO 68 (72) sts.
Join in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts. PM
Work in 1x1 Rib pattern until piece measures 1.5” (1.75)” from CO edge.

Increase Rnd for 18” (46 cm) size: K8, M1, *[K9, M1, K8, M1]; repeat from * 2 times, K9. (75 sts)
Increase Rnd for 19.25” (49 cm) size: *[K9, M1]; repeat from * 8 times (80 sts)

Body (both sizes):


Switch to larger circular needles.
Rnd 1: *[P6, K2, P6, K1(2)]; repeat from * 4 times. [75 (80) sts]
Rnd 2: K all sts
Rnds 3-4: Repeat rnds 1 and 2.
Rnd 5: *[½LPC, P3, K2, P3, ½RPC, K1(2)]; repeat from * 4 times.
Rnd 6: K all sts.
Rnd 7: *[P2, ½LPC, P1, K2, P1, ½RPC, P2, K1(2)]; repeat from * 4 times.
Rnd 8: K all sts.
Rnd 9: *[P4, ½LPC, ½RPC, P4, K1(2)]; repeat from * 4 times.
Rnd 10: K all sts.
Rnds 11-28: Repeat rnds 5-10, 3 times.
Rnd 29: *[P6, K2, P6, K1(2)]; repeat from * 4 times.
Rnd 30: K all sts.

For 19.25” (49 cm) size: Repeat rnds 29 & 30 once more.

Crown Shaping (both sizes):


Switch to DPNs when necessary.
Rnd 1: *[P5, K2tog, K1, P5, K2tog, K0(1)]; repeat from * 4 times. [65 (70) sts]
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rnd 3: *[P4, K2tog, K1, P4, K2tog, K0(1)]; repeat from * 4 times. [55 (60) sts]
Rnd 4: Knit.
Rnd 5: *[P3, K2tog, K1, P3, K2tog, K0(1)]; repeat from * 4 times. [45 (50) sts]
Rnd 6: Knit.
Rnd 7: *[P2, K2tog, K1, P2, K2tog, K0(1)]; repeat from * 4 times. [35 (40) sts]
Rnd 8: Knit.
Rnd 9: *[P1, K2tog, K1, P1, K2tog, K0(1)]; repeat from * 4 times. [25 (30) sts]
Rnd 10: Knit.
Rnd 11: *[K2tog, K1, K2tog, K0(1)]; repeat from * 4 times. [15 (20) sts]
Rnd 12: Knit.
Rnd 13: *[K1(0), K2tog]; repeat from * 4 (9) times. [10 (10) sts]
Break yarn leaving a 6” (15 cm) tail.
Using a yarn needle, thread the tail through all live sts on needles.
Pull tight and tie off to close.

Finishing and Pom Pom:


Lightly block piece to finished measurements.
With a 3 3/8 ” pom pom maker, follow manufacturer's instructions for making a pom pom.
After you make the pom pom you should have 2 strands of yarn hanging from the center of the pom pom.
With a yarn needle, use these strands of yarn to secure pom pom to top of hat. Weave in all ends.
