Long long time ago, ten Suns appeared in the sky. (Hěnjiǔ hěnjiǔ yǐqián, shí gè tàiyáng
chūxiàn zài tiānkōng zhōng)
They looked like ten fireballs which scorched the entire earth. (Tāmen kàn qǐlái xiàng shí gè
huǒqiú shāo jiāole zhěnggè dìqiú.)
There was a sharpshooter named Hou Yi who attempted to help people to shoot down the
excess Suns. (Yǒu yīgè jiào Hóu Yì de shénqiāngshǒu, tā shìtú bāngzhù rénmen jíluò duōyú
de tàiyáng)
Hou Yi shot down nine Suns at one time, and left the last one. (Hóu Yì yīcì jíluò jiǔ gè
tàiyáng, shèng xià zuìhòu yīgè)
Hou Yi commanded that the Sun should rise and fall on time each day to benefit the people.

After Hou Yi became famous, many people came to learn the archery from him. (Hóu Yǐ
chéngmíng hòu, hěnduō rén lái xiàng tā xuéxí shèjiàn)
Pang Meng was one of them. (Páng Méng jiùshì qízhōng zhī yī.)
Scene 5
One day, Hou Yi went out for hunting with his disciples, leaving Chang’e at home alone.

Pang Meng pretended to be ill and did not go with them. (Páng Méng jiǎzhuāng shēngbìng

After Hou Yi left, Pang Meng broke into Hou Yi‘s house with sword and forced Chang’e to
give him the pill. (Hóu Yí líkāi hòu, Páng Méng yòng jiàn chuǎng rù Hóu Yí de fángzi, pòshǐ
Chang é gěi tā chī yào.)
Chang’e worried that Pang Meng will bring disasters to human being after he got the magic,
so she swallowed the pill. (Chang é dānxīn Páng Méng dédào mófǎ hòu huì jǐ rénlèi dài lái
zāinàn, suǒyǐ tā tūn xiàle yàowán)
After swallowing the pill, Chang’e felt that her body become very light immediately and she
flew to the heaven. (Tūn xià yàowán hòu, Chang é gǎnjué dào tā de shēntǐ lìkè biàn dé hěn
qīng, fēi dàole tiāntáng)
Chang’e worried about Hou Yi, so she only flew to the moon, which was nearest to the earth,
and became the moon goddess. (Chang é dānxīn Hóu Yí, suǒyǐ tā zhǐ fēi dào lí dìqiú zuìjìn de
yuèqiú, chéngwéi yuèqiú nǚshén.)
Chang’e was accompanied by a jade rabbit in the moon every day. (Chang é měitiān dū yǒu
yīgè yùtù péizhe yuèliàng)
Chang’e missed her husband very much, so did her husband Hou Yi. (Chang é fēicháng
xiǎngniàn zhàngfū, zhàngfū Hóu Yí yě hěn xiǎngniàn)

Hou Yi make many cakes according to the god’s method on August 15th, and Chang’e really

Later on, people called this round flourmade cake “mooncake” and passed it on from

Moon Cakes festival are one of the most important festivals for the Chinese besides Chinese
New Year. It is celebrated on August 15 each year to commemorate the events of Chang'e
and the origin of the moon. The festival is celebrated with a lantern parade on the eve of the
festival, in addition to the moon cakes themselves.
