CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
Students, nowadays are having a rough time in managing the
things needed to do especially, priorities such as studies, work, family,
etc. It gets even more difficult when they have additional work to do.
This study applies to the lives of the working students who are having a
hard time in doing both their studies and job at the same time. In
developing countries where students have a lot of issues during
academic journey have a new story for the researcher to dig out much
more interesting results. Time management practices have an impact
on the results of students as empirical studies done by past
researchers. In spite of knowing about the impact of time on academic
achievement, this relationship is not given importance by the students.
At higher education level the study schedule must properly planned,
implemented and controlled for better results. This research is about
determining the relationship between the time management skills and
academic achievement of the students. Time management is very
important and it may actually affect individual's overall performance and
achievements. However, all of these are related by how individuals
manage their time to suit their daily living or to make it flow steadily with

their routines. Conducive settings and environment will surely promote
positive outcomes to the students, besides having good lectures given
by their teachers. Nevertheless, students' time management can be
considered as one of the aspects that can move a student to be a good
student. A good time management is vital for students to shine.
However, some of the students do not have good time management
skills that has negatively affect their life and their academic. There are
some disadvantages and advantages for being working student. Being
a student while holding a job they are often short on time and
commonly find themselves limited time to study, sleep, and maintain
healthy eating habits. They need to know how to manage their time.
Time for work, time for being employee, time for school and time for
being students. Humans are a funny bunch, and we often procrastinate
doing the things that really need to get done sooner than later; usually,
the tasks are less than thrilling, such as doing the reading for your most
boring class or tackling that research paper that accounts for a large
chunk of your grade. We think of all that we have to do to get from start
to finish and we may feel a bit overwhelmed; instead of taking on the
task in smaller chunks, we just do nothing. Then the anxiety builds as
we think about how we still have to do it and again, instead of starting,
we put it off again. Since students have a lot of things in mind, they

aren’t able to manage their time properly. But with the help of some tips
from different persons might help and also the research made by the
people who are interested in knowing how time management affects
the habit of the working students. However, time management plays a
vital role in improving student’s academic performance and
achievements. Each and every student should have time management
ability which includes setting goals and priorities, using time
management mechanism and being organized in using time. Here time
management is only possible through self-motivation; performance,
ability and motivation. The effectual utilizing of time and managing time
requires procedures and good quality planning behaviors. One can
make use of time effectively and competently by keeping time logs,
setting immediate and long- standing goals, prioritizing responsibilities,
constructing to-do lists and arrangement, and organize one’s
workspace, as studies of earlier period and plentiful how-to books
proposed. Time saving techniques and behaviors can be categorized
into numerous groups and be liable to contribute to a number of
fundamental qualities in general. Time management demands a key
shift in emphasis: concentrate on results, not on being busy. There are
a lot of cases with people who waste their lives in discolored doings
and attain very small since they are placing their labors into the

incorrect responsibilities or weakening to focus their activity
successfully, established that two priorities. Time management has a
significant impact on the lives of the students commonly for those who
are studying in the higher education institutions where there is no
existence of parent and teacher supervision. The main objective of the
current research is that to which extent time management practices
influences the academic achievement of the university students in
higher education institution of a developing country. Good time
management allows you to accomplish more in a shorter period of time,
which leads to more free time, which lets you take advantage of
learning opportunities, lowers your stress, and helps you focus, which
leads to more career success. Each benefit of time management
improves another aspect of your life. But for many, time management is
the weakness that holds back their career and causes chaos with their
daily life. Time management can be a compounding weakness because
it can be amplified with other issues. A major disadvantage of poor time
management is its effects on stress levels. It leads to dissatisfaction of
not having worked hard and wasted time. Furthermore, people with
inadequate time management skills can’t make sufficient time to spend
with family, friends, and studies.

The researchers aims to determine the relevance and the
effectiveness of Time Management on the Working Students of
Philippine Christian University with the comprehension of their habits.
Specifically, the researcher’s aims to answer are the following:
1. How does managing become a problem among working senior high
school students?
2. How does Time Management affects the habits of a working senior
high school student?
3. If you're a working shs student, in what ways will you handle your
habits and job at the same time?

Significance of the Problem
The result of this study will provide a useful knowledge and
better understanding of how Time Management affects the habit of
Working Students.
This study will give benefits to the following:
Working Students: This research will help them to know the
different factors that will to determine how useful time management is,
wisely in work and prevent them from procrastination.
Parents: This study could help them to appreciate the way of
dealing time with the habits if they have son or daughter who is
Working Student.
Future Researchers: May this research be their guide to be
able to use the findings for the future research. They can get more
information that will help them to conduct a new research.

Scope and Limitation
The focus of the study is directed towards the advancement of
knowledge in dealing time management regarding with their habits.
This research study is largely dependent on the novelty, sincerity and
integrity of the respondents. The research study has limited and
conducted only at the Philippine Christian University Manila during the
academic year of 2019-2020. Only those who are working students can
participate in this research.
The respondents are 5 working senior high school students of
Philippine Christian University Manila campus.

Definition of Terms
Time management – the coordination at task and activities to
maximize due effectiveness of an individual perspective.
Time – measurement for the amount of time needed by
someone to do something.
Task – a piece of work that has been given to be done.
Organizing - arrange or order thing so that they can do a task
easily and quickly.
Planning – the process of making plans.
Vital role – very important, necessary skilful or essential.
Fundamental qualities – a foundation qualities to accomplish a
certain task or goal.
Supervision – the act of watching a person or activity and
making that every task is done properly.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the research method, research locale, the
respondents, data gathering procedure, instruments and techniques
and the statistical treatment to be used.
