“THE EFFECT OF TIME MANAGEMENT TOWARDS GRADE 12 HUMSS SENIOR

HIGH STUDENT IN ASIAN DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION COLLEGE”

Chapter I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Time management is very important and it may actually affect individual's overall
performance and achievements. Students nowadays always commented that they do not have
enough time to complete all the tasks assigned to them. In addition, a university environment's
flexibility and freedom can derail students who have not mastered time management skills. Time
management is the process of organizing and planning how to divide your time between specific
activities. Good time management enables you to work smarter not harder so that you get more
done in less time, even when time is tight and pressures are high. Failing to manage your time
damages your effectiveness and causes stress. It also refers to the way that you organize and plan
how long you spend on specific activities. It may seem counter-intuitive to dedicate precious
time to learning about time management, instead of using it to get on with your work, but the
benefits are enormous; Greater productivity and efficiency, A better professional reputation, Less
stress, Increased opportunities for advancement, and Greater opportunities to achieve important
life and career goals.
Time is to be deemed very substantial to human beings as age and capital; especially that
entire human life is made of time segments which mean the second that is gone is going to
shorten the human life and make the death nearer. The whole life is a test to see who deserves the
paradise in the judgment day, so exploiting the time to fulfill ambitions is of great importance in
both worldly life and in the hereafter (Algaradawi, 2003, p14). Time management is very
worthwhile issue during to being it a key factor in any success at all levels of life and for that the
term time management is strongly associated with administrative work. Despite of its
importance, it is never an easy task to manage time individually and a need to specific
qualifications along with many personal skills is then a must. Let alone exploiting the available
resources in order to meet the society and individual needs at the same time and the ability to
adjust with the present and future situations (Alghamdi, 2008, p 49).
To manage time is another sense of distributing priorities and exert efforts upon that
distribution, according to Covey (2004) seven matters a person must give priorities for, as
namely; improving the contacts with others, preparing the activities more effectively, improving
the process of managing and planning for the duties, caring for the personal interests, seizing
new opportunities, improving the personal skills and information, admitting the power of other.
In this respect, mentioning the academic level is of close link to the level of success one may
gain; as Academic achievement is the dream of family and social status of the individual, where
a human needs to have a positive view of him/her self as this view along with the physical
abilities will lead to make real resources to future success. It follows then that in order to get
self-satisfaction, one will need to link self–recognition to achievement and self-expressing. A
good finding on this is represented in high achievements done by self- recognized intellectuals
compared to those with low-recognition (Asakreh, 2003, p 54). Studying successful people
schedules is a very contribution towards the knowledge behind making true the goals. The
contribution of this paper is to study some of the close links people always advise to gain high
grades at school which is time management.

In the modern world, time is seen as an indefinitely divisible and usable commodity. It
helps to infuse e the concept of time through the institution. All the material and human
resources possessed by organization ns can be enhanced in the course of time or be transformed
as time goes on; yet the only asset that cannot be changed or purchased or stored is time itself.
The secret to a achieving success in life is effectively managing the is resource that everyone
possesses equally and paying sufficient emphasis to planning (Macan, Shahani, Dipboye &
Phillips, 2000). Though effective and efficient use of time varies with respect to the tasks
performed , the further increase in the level of knowledge and skills expect ted from modern
employees has further increased the necessity of time planning. The road to success in social life
passes through effective and efficient working which is only possible via time management. The
competitive environment we live in today encourages people from as early as their elementary
education to plan and manage time effectively. The high performance required by competitive
conditions forces organizations and directors to use time effectively and stipulates the search to
control time (Alay & Koçak, 2003).

In developing countries where students have a lot o f issues during academic journey have a
new story for the researcher to dig out much more interesting results . Time management
practices have an impact on the results of students as empirical studies done by past researchers.
In spite of knowing about the impact of time o n academic achievement, this relationship is not
given importance by the students (Sevari & Kandy, 2011). At high education level the study
schedule must properly planned, implemented and controlled for better results.
Emphasizing time also helps to develop cost effective educational policies by the authorities
especially at higher education level (Kaushar, 2013). Ongoing problem of scarcity of knowledge
in connection with time management and academic outputs is due to lack of easiness and of
costly ways of collecting data. Driven by this fact, particular emphasis has been paid in the
modern education system to time management issues by every students’ attitudes and behaviors
related to time and its management (Karim, Sevari, Mitra & Kandy, 20 15). Based on the
necessity of effective time management required from students during their academic and
professional life, field research has been conducted d in the present paper towards the aim of
designate ng their position with respect to effective time management and determining the effect
of their time management skill son their academic achievements.
Several factors were found to significantly affect the academic performance of the students
such as the number of tasks to be submitted and accomplished, interaction with classmates
during study time and most especially the allotted study time. Due to the situations mentioned,
there searchers would like to determine the significant relationship between the study time
management and academic performance of the students in Asian Development Foundation
College.

questions that the researchers conducted . We select all the grade 12 Humss students since we are
choose only one strand in Senior High School. We choose the Descriptive research design

and thinking another activities that they need to finish.

Framework and Conceptual

Theoretical
The current study is compose of two theories- The Bucket Rock theory; and the ABC
System that support the study that researchers conducted.
The Bucket of Rocks Theory
To properly manage time, one needs to know the level of importance that
each activity holds. The Bucket of Rocks theory (also referred to as the Pickle Jar Theory) offers
insight into the order in which a person should work on his activities (Mancini 2003).
The theory proposes that you put big rocks in a bucket (this will represent the important

Students
thing) and then you fill it up with pebbles followed by sand and then water. The smaller
substances represent increasingly unimportant tasks (Forsyth 2010). According to this theory, we
are supposed to do the important things (big stones) first and then move on to the less important
things (pebbles and sand) and finally if we have the tie, we can do the unimportant things
(water). If we begin working on the unimportant things or the less important things first, we will
not have the space to do the important things in our lives.
ABC System Theory
Every person is on average faced with many activities which require
attention. In many instances, the time available may not be sufficient for all the activities that
need to be done.

In order to use time more effectively, a person needs to prioritize on the tasks that need to
be undertaken. The ABC system developed by Alan Lakein can provide an efficient means for
prioritizing. Mancini (2003) demonstrates that using the ABC approach can facilitate an
individual’s prioritizing. The letter assigned to a given task denotes its priority level with A
being the tasks with highest urgency, B the tasks that have low urgency but are of importance
and C being tasks that are not urgent and whose completion can be postponed. Mancini (2003)
states that the tasks can be broken down further as A1, A2, A3 etc with A1 being the most urgent
and important task.
