The Greenhouse Effects.
A serious problem
The greenhouse effect went from being a natural phenomenon to becoming a
problem that affects us in this century. Climate change is the consequence of any
kind of adjustments in the climate system. Change in climate is caused by
fluctuations in the factors that influence climatic patterns. This phenomenon has
become one of the greatest environmental threats and risks that the world is facing.
The greenhouse effect is considered as the natural process however it is increasing
very fast nowadays and has become very serious because of some human activities.
Persistent human activities such as driving cars, farming, deforestation, and
industrialization result into production of greenhouse gases. These gases gather in
the atmospheric space, and trap the heat from the sun. The increase in greenhouse
gases cause climatic changes that lead to the alteration in ecosystems, as well as
population problems due to droughts, floods that cause massive migrations.
The consequences produced by the increase in temperature on Earth are many. Life
on Earth depends on the presence of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to
insulate our planet’s surface against the chill of space; without them the Earth’s
average climate would be about 33 °C cooler. On Earth, human activities are
changing the natural greenhouse. Over the last century the burning of fossil fuels
like coal and oil has increased the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide
(CO2). Global warming and greenhouse gasses are problematic as they raise the
earth’s temperature, but exact effects of global warming exist and what effect will
global warming have for our planet and our society in the future? Polar ice caps can
melt, there will be widespread flooding all over the world, there will be an increase in
the frequency and intensity of harmful natural disasters and the consequences to the
economy will be detrimental to societal progress. The melting of polar ice caps poses
one of the biggest problems for human society. As the earth’s temperature
increases, these large masses of ice and snow will melt and create the sea level to
rise all over the world. In the same way, glaciers will also melt and create problems
on land. According to scientific research, if all the snow and ice were to melt today,
this would result in a raised sea level of over 200 feet worldwide and would be
instantly detrimental to many low lying areas such as the Netherlands and other low
lying islands around the world. It is the tragic case that most of the countries and
areas that will be affected directly are often the ones that contribute the least to
global warming.
On the other hand,The world's ecosystems are in high danger from the effects of
global warming.Natural ecosystems are one of our most precious resources, critical
for sustaining life on the planet. With warming, the distribution of terrestrial
ecosystems will change as plants and animals follow the shifting climate. Both the
amount and rate of warming predicted represent a threat to the nation’s biodiversity.
Certain species may face dwindling numbers and even extinction if they are unable
to migrate fast enough to keep up with the changing climate. Climate change is likely
to alter ecosystem composition and function — that is, which species make up an
ecosystem and the way in which energy and materials flow through these systems.
These modifications are bound to alter the amount and quantity of the various goods
and services ecosystems provide.
People may be fleeing rising seas, droughts, floods and other effects of climate
change, in migrations that could far exceed the reach of any place. The researchers
say that the effects of climate are hard to sort from connected factors including
political and economic conflicts, extreme weather events, population growth, and
human destruction of ecosystems and overuse of farmland. Breakdown of
ecosystem-based economies including subsistence herding, farming and fishing will
be the dominant driver of forced migration. Sea level rise directly threatens the
existence of some 40 countries and saltwater intrusion, flooding and erosion could
destroy agriculture. Therefore, it can be said that climate-related migration
represents a major threat to human security and well-being.
The greenhouse effect causes climatic problems, in the ecosystems and causes
human migrations. Due to these consequences, we people of the world should try to
slow down the emission of greenhouse gases and/or find ways to balance the gases
so the climate doesn’t change so rapidly. If this is done, we would be forced to adapt
to the new climate that we brought upon ourselves. It is time to start minimizing the
emission of greenhouse gases, it is necessary to do so now because tomorrow may
be too late.
