LA BOHEME Opera in four acts, Libreto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Lui Mica First performed a the Teatro Regio, Turin, February 1, 1896 CHARACTERS Rodolfo, a poet tenor Marcello, a painter: baritone Collie, a philosopher: bas Schaunard, a musician: baritone Benoit the landlord: bass (6 enor) Alcindoro, a rich elderly geatleman, ind of Musets: bas (or tenor) Parpignol, 2 toy ele: tenor ‘Customs Sergeant: bass Mim seamstress: soprano Museta, an on/off grtriend of Marcello: soprano ‘Students, working girls, bourgeois, shopkeepers, vendors, solders, waiters, children, mothers, dandis, customs warkers ‘The ime is cites 1830, The Latin Quarter, Pars, ‘THE PLOT acti In the garret 11s Christmas Eve, and snow-covered roof can be seen fom the windows in the humble gamet where the four Bohemians are sharing a room. Two of them, Rodolfo, 2 poet, and Marcelo, apmter, ae tying to work but the oom is freezing and they cant afford fuel. Rodolfo as the idea of buring one of his plays. Asa they sit warming themselves, Collie philosopher, enters discouraged a the lck of sucess he's had in pawning books. He sits with his other two fiends and soon Schaunard, the musician aives, bringing food, firewood, wine and money, all proceeds ofa job he just had atthe hore of an English enileman, Hie ties to tell thom his story but the otbers are too busy preparing the table. They then decide to dink wine at home and eat out Knock & heard and it Benoit, the landlord, coming 10 collect his ent. The four frends manage to avoid payment by ticking Benoit and he leaves in disgrace. They divide Schaunard’s earings and leave for the Café Momus, leaving Rodolfo behind to finish his article for the newspaper. He i interupted by 8 timid knock onthe door by hie neighbor Mim, asking him to relight her cand, which has gone out. Rodolfo obliges, but as she turs to leave it again goes ‘out, ad in attempting to relight it, Rodolfo blows his own candle out. Mimi nos realizes that she has ‘dropped her key, and together they search for iti the darkened room. The hands meet snd the search ix forgoten. They tll each other about themselves ntl Redolio's impatient trends eal rom ouside. He ‘opens a window to answer them, ling ina ray of moonlight which falls on Minn’ face. Marcello is busy fisting, ‘with the girls, while Mimi and Rodolfo come out of a milliners shop with a pink bonnet for Mimi Rodolfo is jelous when she looks around st other men. The couple then joins the other three Bohemians, ‘who are now siting at a table in front of the caf, and they onder their meal.
