In the garret
11s Christmas Eve, and snow-covered roof can be seen fom the windows in the humble gamet where
the four Bohemians are sharing a room. Two of them, Rodolfo, 2 poet, and Marcelo, apmter, ae tying
to work but the oom is freezing and they cant afford fuel. Rodolfo as the idea of buring one of his
plays. Asa they sit warming themselves, Collie philosopher, enters discouraged a the lck of sucess
he's had in pawning books. He sits with his other two fiends and soon Schaunard, the musician aives,
bringing food, firewood, wine and money, all proceeds ofa job he just had atthe hore of an English
enileman, Hie ties to tell thom his story but the otbers are too busy preparing the table. They then
decide to dink wine at home and eat out Knock & heard and it Benoit, the landlord, coming 10
collect his ent. The four frends manage to avoid payment by ticking Benoit and he leaves in disgrace.
They divide Schaunard’s earings and leave for the Café Momus, leaving Rodolfo behind to finish his
article for the newspaper. He i interupted by 8 timid knock onthe door by hie neighbor Mim, asking
him to relight her cand, which has gone out. Rodolfo obliges, but as she turs to leave it again goes
‘out, ad in attempting to relight it, Rodolfo blows his own candle out. Mimi nos realizes that she has
‘dropped her key, and together they search for iti the darkened room. The hands meet snd the search ix
forgoten. They tll each other about themselves ntl Redolio's impatient trends eal rom ouside. He
‘opens a window to answer them, ling ina ray of moonlight which falls on Minn’ face. They fal into

Quarter
‘We find the fiends that same evening in square with many shops, with dhe Café Momus at one side.
‘Thay are separated in the busing crowd. While Schaunard is haggling over th price of a hom and a
pipe Collie muses about the rare copy ofa Runic grammar he's just bought. Marcello is busy fisting,
‘with the girls, while Mimi and Rodolfo come out of a milliners shop with a pink bonnet for Mimi
Rodolfo is jelous when she looks around st other men. The couple then joins the other three Bohemians,
‘who are now siting at a table in front of the caf, and they onder their meal. Must uve, followed by
her “sgar-daddy,” the elderly, doddering Alcindor, 8 wealthy councillor of stat, who is out of breath
{rom carrying all of Muse's packages. She and Marcelo were lovers, but have quareled and parted,
and are now tying t0 appear indifferent to each other, although itis clearly a pretense on both sides
“Museta contrive tori herself of Alcindoro by protending tat she as suddenly develope an acte pain
{inher fot, and sends Alcindoo off to get hee anew pair of shoes. Museta joins Marcello an the others,
tnd when the waiter brings the bill, she tells him to give it to Alcindoro when he retums. A military
farade marches into the square, and the fiends runoff into the erowd, carrying the shocless Musetts on
their shoulders. Aleindoro returns to the abandoned café with the new pair of shoes, is presented with the
bill an simply fait into a chai.

‘At the Barrigre d'Enfer, inthe outskirts of Paris
Its dawn on a cold February morning atthe Baritre CEnfer, a tol gate on the Orleans Road, To one
side isa tavern, which fas as signboard the picture Marcello was working on in Act I. Sounds of
revely are heard from within, Customs officials doze around a fire while people stand in the snow,
‘waiting 1 be It through, Looking for Marcello, Mimi appears, weak and sick, and coughing incessant.
‘Marcello comes out ofthe tavem and explains to Mimi that he now pains atthe tavern and thst Musetia
teaches singing 10 the passer-by. Rodolfo i abo inside and Marcello invites Mimi to come and join
thom. Sadly she refuse, and tells him that she and Rodolfo must part because of his constant jealousy,
Rovolfo comes out of the favem and Mimi hides behind a wee. He has come to tell Marcello that he
‘wishes to leave Mimi because she is fi, but when pressed by Marcello, he confesses the truth: that
‘Mimi is very ill and i slowly dying and that he eannotaord to buy firewood to heat his squalid gare

‘Back at their garrt, several months later, Rodolfo and Marcelo are tying to work, bu etch cannot stop
thinking about his former love, Schaunaed and Colline arrive with food and 1 choeruhemselves up, the
fiends sit down to eat, pretending ito bea grand banquet. Further horsplay follows til a knock is heard
and Muscta enters saying that Mimi is outside, almost woo ill © make it up the stairs. She is dying and
‘wishes to spend her last moments with Rodolfo. He rushes out to her and brings her in, making ber Hie
‘own onthe bed, where he tiesto warm her cold hands. Museta gives Marcell her erring telling hime
to sll them and buy some medicine forthe dying gel. She in tum goes off 0 fetch her mui for Mimi
Colline decides to pawn his coat to buy some food, and Schaunard goes out with him, leaving Mini and
Rodolfo lone to reminisce about their first mesting. The others return, and Mim gratefully accepts
Musctts's mull Mimi closes her eyes and all hut Rodolfo realize that she is beyond saving, Tis only
