He takes no notice of the Page's warning that he is playing a dangerous game. Soldiers’ talk is interrupted by the sound of Jochanaan's voice proclaiming that he is the forerunner of a great Prophet. He has been imprisoned by Herod because he is constant in his denunciation of Herodias, and has been intemed in an underground cistern from whence his voice can be heard. Salome, in considerable excitement, enters running from the banquet hall. She cannot bear the way Herod, her stepfather, looks at her; he is, after all, her mother’s husband. The Page predicts disaster. Salome is riveted by the sound of Jochanaan's voice from the cistern and demands to know who it She knows that the Prophet has denounced her mother, because she has married her husband's brother. She knows also that her mother hates him and her stepfather is frightened of him. She refuses to go back to the feast and says she wants to speak to the Prophet. This is of course strictly forbidden but she gradually wheedles Narraboth into doing what she wants and he gives the order for Jochanaan to be brought out of the cistern. He comes slowly into the light and loses no time in denouncing both Herod and Herodias in so forthright a manner that Salome is at first bewildered and then fascinated. Jochanaan quickly tums on her raging at her as the daughter of an iniquitous mother. Salome tells him of her desire for his body, his hair and finally his mouth. She does everything she can to tempt him but the sole result is that he bids her do penance, spurning her advances. When Narraboth in despair kills himself with his own sword, she does not so much as notice it. The Prophet wars her to seek the only one in which she can find redemption, the Man of Galilee. But realizing that his words fall on deaf ears, he curses her and retreats back down into his cistern. Herod is immediately filled with misgivings, which are not quieted by the Prophet's continued prediction of doom. Herod now asks Salome to dance for him. She demurs until he promises to grant any request she may make of him. Salome eventually begins the Dance of the Seven Veils, gyrating sensuously all around the stage and close to the bewitched Herod, who can hardly keep his hands off her, as she seductively removes one by one, the seven veils that cover her lithe body. At the end of it Herod is devastated when she demands the head of the Prophet on a silver platter. He offers her anything else he can name, precious stones, his unique white peacocks, the mantle of the High Priest, even the Veil of the Temple. But Salome refuses to release him from his oath. He senses quite early that he is fighting a losing battle and in the end he agrees that she shall have what she demands. Herodias takes the Ring of Death from Herrod's finger and gives it to the First Soldier, who summons the Executioner to go down into the cistern. Salome listens as Jochanaan is beheaded and an arm slowly rises out of the cistern, eerily holding a silver salver with the Prophet's bleeding head on it.
