Introduction
This research report will give insight and details about three different cities for
possible staff-building morale conferences. Once finished going through this report,
you’ll learn about the top three cities that have been chosen, along with knowing which
one would best be suited for this conference. The three cities mentioned are going to be
New York, Vancouver and Toronto. Each city will touch upon the hotel options, and
conference facilities for our staff-building moral. Along with this, we will learn about
transit and how to maneuver around the cities. Then lastly, sightseeing opportunities.
On our days off, we can take some time to go visit the most talked about places in those
cities.
New York City
Hotel Amenities and Conference Facility
Firstly, starting off with New York. This city had so much to choose from and was
difficult to narrow down. Let’s start with the hotel option for this city: Holiday Inn in the
Lower East Side. This hotel was very reasonably priced, in a great location and close to
attractions and shopping. Per night, a single occupancy room with a double bed would
cost about $212.00. This room comes with free Wi-Fi and breakfast included for two.
They have fully equipped air conditioning units in each room along with a gym at your
service. This hotel is an 11-minute walk to the Brooklyn Bridge, and only a 20-minute
drive to the New York LaGuardia airport [ CITATION Hol20 \l 4105 ].
For the conference hall, I chose the NYC Seminar and Conference Center. This
center is only a 16-minute drive from the hotel including traffic. There are also many
3
restaurants walking distance from this conference center. This conference hall has 11
seminar and meeting rooms, that can accommodate anywhere between 6 to 330
people. Rooms are equipped with high performance laptops or desktops computers,
along with LCD projectors and large TV screens. The room I chose to rent out for our
conference is the Seminar Room A. This room would cost us $1400 dollars for the day
but would hold up to 54 people [ CITATION NYC20 \l 4105 ].
Transit
There are lots of options when it comes to transit in the city of New York.
Narrowing it down to the top two, I have chosen the subway and the city busses. The
subway is probably the most efficient way to get around New York City being as though
there are subway stops at every corner. Pricing for the subway downtown isn’t too bad,
ranging from $3.00 per ride, or $33.00 for a 7-day unlimited ride package. Next, the city
busses. Busses are everywhere in the downtown core of the city, and they are roughly
the same price as the subway service costing about $3.00 per ride.
Sightseeing Opportunities
New York is known for some of the best attractions in the world, and I chose two
that I feel would great for sightseeing. The
first one being going to Coney Island. Coney
Island would be such a fun day trip to make
on a day off from the convention. There is so
much to do on Coney Island from street
Figure 1: Picture of the Coney Island Boardwalk
4
performers, to rides, to relaxing on the beach. Coney Island is roughly a 30-minute drive
from our hotel [ CITATION Con20 \l 4105 ].
The second tourist attraction that I found is the Rockefeller Center. This iconic
tourist attraction is mostly known for its Christmas Tree lighting ceremony. Not only this,
but you can climb to “the top of the Rock” as they call it and see 360-degree views of
the city skyline. Tickets for this attraction would cost roughly $32.00 to $38.00 dollars
[ CITATION Top20 \l 4105 ].
Vancouver
Hotel Amenities and Conference Facility
Vancouver is a beautiful place to visit and a great contender for our conference.
For the hotel in Vancouver, I choose the Coast Vancouver Airport Hotel. This hotel
comes with free Wi-Fi, a gym, and restaurant included in the building. The rooms
include all the essentials you need for you stay, including a desk with a computer in
your room for you. This hotel doesn’t just come with all that, it comes with a great price
as well. The cost for a double bedroom comes in at $79.00 per night, this also includes
overnight parking [ CITATION Boo20 \l 4105 ].
I have chosen Fern Resort as a conference facility because it’s a big area
(14,000 square feet) with lakeside conference space and seven unique meeting rooms.
You can ger an All- Inclusive Conference package which offers a meeting room, break
snacks, complimentary parking, and resort wide Wi-Fi [ CITATION Fer20 \l 4105 ]. A second
option I looked at is the Vancouver Convention Centre. This center is a downtown
waterfront location with a mountain backdrop. This building has 466,550 sq. ft of flexible
5
meeting, exhibition, ballroom and plenary space. Meeting rooms in this building can
hold anywhere from 18 to almost 200 people per room [ CITATION Van \l 4105 ].
Transit
Vancouver has many ways of transportation throughout the city. One being
Skytrain. This is a completely automated light rapid transit system that runs from
downtown Vancouver to the Vancouver airport and south. For $9.00, the price of a Day
Pass, you can ride the Vancouver SkyTrain the length of 28km route and return. With
the same ticket, you can take trips on the SeaBus to the North Shore or ride as many of
Vancouver’s 1000 busses as you can squeeze into the day [ CITATION BCP20 \l 4105 ].
Sightseeing Opportunities
When in Vancouver, I would recommend checking out some places such as the
Capilano Suspension bridge park, and the Britannia Mine. The Capilano Suspension
bridge is a suspension bridge crossing the Capilano river in North Vancouver. Each
ticket is $54.00 for an all-day pass.
Not only can you walk across the
bridge, but you can also do some
treetop adventures, do a cliff walk,
visit some Raptors, and have guided
history and nature tours [ CITATION Figure 2: Capilano Suspension Bridge Park
Cap20 \l 4105 ].
The Britannia Mine Museum is an award-winning Museum, that tunes out awe
and memorable experiences. This tour takes roughly two hours and recommends you
6
wear comfy shoes due to the staircase. Tickets for this attraction cost $34.00 per person
[ CITATION Bri20 \l 4105 ].
Toronto
Hotel Amenities and Convention Facility
If we were to use this destination as our city for our conference, the place we
would host our conference is the Beeton Hall Event Centre. This event centre is in the
Toronto Conference Library and features a reception lobby, private washrooms, a cloak
room, catering kitchen, and an optional private entrance from Collier Street. This event
center has four different space sizes: Breton Hall, Executive Boardroom, Founders’
Room and Sonnet. For this space, it will cost around $1000 to $1900 to rent depending
on the room we pick. Because we are a multi-million-dollar company, we probably have
more than 100 employees. The room I would choose in this event centre is the Beeton
Hall, which by the website features “wood paneling and a sound-absorbing ceiling
treatment built to add aesthetic dimension and acoustic balance. A prominent glass wall
creates a spacious and airy environment and connects Beeton Hall to an adjacent
reception lobby.” [ CITATION Bee \l 4105 ] This hall has a max standing of 150 and a max
seated of 150 as well with a meeting space of 1900 square feet. They do not specify
how much the Beeton Hall specifically costs, but the range they give on the website I
would say it is around $1900 for the rental fee. Overall, the Beeton Hall Event Centre
has so much space and offers so many different amenities that it can work for this trip.
While looking for hotels, I have found one called Hotel 89 Yorkville. This is a
breakfast included hotel that contains air conditioning, a bathtub or shower,
7
complimentary high-speed internet in room, free Wi-Fi, free toiletries and more. For this
hotel, it will be around $100 a night two-person bedroom [ CITATION Hot20 \l 4105 ].
Transit
There are many ways to get around in Toronto, but the two I will be focusing on
is taxi and Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). For taxi’s, the price of the drive depends
of several factors. According to taxi-calculator.com, the fare depends on “the route to be
travelled, the journey time and the taxi fare valid in Toronto.” [ CITATION Tax20 \l 4105 ] But
when you use a taxi in Toronto, there is a basic fee of $4.25 and for every kilometre you
go it is $1.75. Taxi-calculator.com also mentions that if the taxi driver has to stand and
wait, there is a $31 charge per hour. For example, the hotel to the event centre is
around 1 kilometre apart, so it would cost around $6 to get to the conference. If we were
to use the TTC it would cost $325 per ride. This would be better if you were sightseeing
and you didn’t want to spend the money on the basic fee of a taxi. Overall, it depends
on where you are going and how much it would cost to travel to the location using either
of those options.
Sightseeing Opportunities
There are many different tourist
attractions in Toronto. According to Lana
Law, there are at least 18 of them that are
top-rated. The most popular place to go in
Toronto is the CN Tower (as shown in the
picture to the right). This tower is one of
8
Figure 3: Toronto Skyline, CN Tower.
the tallest freestanding structures in the world, at one point it was until it was surpassed.
This tower has may different things to do from the 360 degree restaurant to the “edge
walk”, “which involves a hands-free walk on a 1.5-meter-wide ledge around the outside
of the tower.” [ CITATION Law19 \l 4105 ]
Another place you can go is the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), which is a
museum that covers things like history, art and culture from a variety of periods. Finally,
there is a facility near the CN Tower called Ripley’s Aquarium. This facility is known for
its marine life and it is popular for the whole family. They have an underwater tunnel
with a moving sidewalk so you can watch the ocean world go by all around you. There
are also touch tanks with stingrays and small sharks. In the end, Toronto has many
places to explore and these are only a few of them.
Conclusion
After reviewing and going over the entire report, I have concluded that the best
city to visit would be New York City. After doing research on the city and learning more
about what it has to offer, I believe that with everything that we are looking for, for our
convention, New York City would be the best fit for us. It has so much going for it with
how close everything is to our hotel, to the ample amount of transit that is available for
us to take and all the amazing tourist attractions. As a second best, I would believe
Vancouver would be a good option. I think what Vancouver has going for itself is the fun
sightseeing opportunities for us to take advantage of on our off days. And lastly, I would
recommend Toronto. Toronto isn’t per say the worst option of them all, because all
options would be suitable, it just wouldn’t be worth our while being as though we are
9
already located in Toronto. After all this research, I can conclude that New York City
would be the best city for us and our staff-building morale convention.
