Statement of Purpose
In today’s world, technology is growing at a pace never seen before. Each new day
brings new concepts and the passing day makes them obsolete. Technology is
transcending all barriers and reaching out to new horizons. The technological boom
witnessed in the last decade or two has changed the face of the earth. It has redefined
power equations among countries. The definition of ‘strong’ and ‘weak’ is related to the
technology which one possesses. All this led me to choose a career in engineering and I
enrolled myself as an undergraduate student in engineering in “Rajiv Gandhi College of
Engineering. Research and Technology” (a premier institution of this region)
Right from childhood, I have always been fascinated by the mysteries of science. I had
an analytical mind and was very strong in mathematics. In my grade 10 th(secondary
school) and 12th (senior school) examinations, I stood among the top 10% of the
students of my school. When I was in my third standard my father bought me a small
book, which discussed the achievements and contributions of some of the best-known
scientists of the world. The book had a great effect on me. I read it many times and
there was no turning back. During my school days I made many small models. In my
eight standard I made a model “periscope” which was judged the best model. In my last
year of school I developed a particular fascination in some areas of physics. I loved the
topics on Transistors, chips and semiconductors drew me towards them. I soon realized
that the world of electronics would be my ultimate goal.
The worthiness of my decision soon dawned upon me when I entered my
undergraduate program. The subjects in the course were of my taste. I enjoyed
attending my lectures and would never miss any without any genuine reason. The
papers of “Electronic Devices and Circuits”, “Power Electronics” and “Control Systems”
have been my favorites and the driving force behind me. So, I did not confine myself to
the scope of my syllabus but read as much material as I could in the library. I am a
regular reader of IEEE journals and the monthly magazine “Electronics For You”. This
has kept me abreast with the latest developments and the ongoing research in the field
of electrical and electronics. Furthermore, it has instilled a desire, in me, to delve more
and more into the subject and increase my technical abilities to contribute towards
innovative research.
In my final year of this undergraduate course I am an active member of a group of four
students who are working to design a model of a “Transformer failure preventing system
with data transmission”. The project demonstrates how to protect the distribution
Transformer or any other Transformer burning due to overload over temperature and
input high voltage. Normally Transformers are burning because of these three reasons
and by incorporating this type of monitoring and control circuit, life of the Transformer
can be increased. In this project work in addition to monitoring and control circuit
information about above three parameters can be transmitted using FM Transmitter. For
this purpose three different low frequency oscillators are designed using 555 timer IC’s
for three different parameters.
India is one of the few countries in the world whose tradition for scientific investigation
is very ancient. The need today is to revive her ancient spirit and organized scientific
research on modern lines so that the benefits of knowledge in technology can be applied
to the well being of the common man. If the country is to catch up with the rest of the
world the scientific attitude must replace her traditional mood of thought and action.
India’s needs of technical personnel are not only quantitative but qualitative also. To
help her achieve these goals and to provide her with a quality engineer, I would like to
study further and learn the latest in computer technologies. This would all be fulfilled by
a degree course in Middlesex University.
The days in my undergraduate school have helped me to get sound knowledge and a
firm grasp over principles underlying the course of even network technologies. I think I
have the necessary prerequisites for a graduate course in the same field. Going through
the brochure and website of “Middlesex University” I found that your MSc program in
Computer Network suited my needs perfectly. This decision was taken carefully as I
found that a plethora of opportunities exist at “Middlesex University”. The ongoing
research at your university has drawn me towards it and I have been honestly
impressed by the facilities available. I want to become a part of your university and
hope to have a long and fruitful association with it. The rapid pace of advancement,
which the world has embarked upon, can only be sustained if we have efficient and
professional engineers. I would also love to contribute my bit towards it and hope that
your esteemed university would provide me an opportunity to do so.
