Universidad Autónoma de Nayarit Cucsh - Lingüística Aplicada Academic Writing BOOK: THE DOGS OF BABEL. By: Carolyne Parkhurst

The book follows linguist Paul Iverson who finds his wife Lexy dead at the base of an apple tree. His dog Lorelei was the only witness. Paul is determined to teach Lorelei to speak so she can reveal what happened. The flashbacks to Paul and Lexy's life together are interesting but sometimes confusing. While the mystery of Lexy's death keeps the reader engaged, some more scenes showing Lorelei's perspective could have added to the story. Overall the writing style is clear and allows the reader to theorize along with the characters.

BOOK REPORT
BOOK: THE DOGS OF BABEL. By: Carolyne Parkhurst.

Part 1

 SYNOPSIS.

Paul Iverson is a linguist that tries to teach his dog to speak. One day, Paul was coming
home and then he finds Lexy, his wife, dead fallen from an apple tree. Paul’s dog,
Lorelei, was the only witness and Paul will do anything to know everything about his
wife dead.

 MAIN CHARACTERS.
 Paul Iverson is a linguist who tries to know what really happened the day his wife
died.
 Lorelei is a Rhodesian ridgeback dog and the only witness of Paul’s wife.
 Alexandra “Lexy” is a mask maker and Paul’s wife. She is found dead below an
apple tree.

The book was written by Carolyn Parkhust and it was national bestseller. The book has
good reviews and good critiques.

Part 2

 What did I like?

What I like about the book is how the author started the story. The mystery about Lexy’s
death is very interesting and makes you create some theories about it. I also like the
flashbacks; some of them were sad and pretty. I like the way the book gives you some
clues of the death, they are very surprising.

 What didn’t I like?

I really liked the book, but even when the flashbacks were interesting, sometimes they
got me confused because one page was on the “present day” and then the flashbacks
appeared, there weren’t like an introduction of the flashbacks.

 How did the book and/or certain events make me feel?

The whole book was very satisfying and while you are reading makes you want more
and more and find more clues. The mystery of the Lexy’s death is very interesting and
the love Paul feels for Lexy is very cute.

 What did you learn from the book?

ACADEMIC WRITING
BOOK REPORT
I learned from the book that if you really wish something you have to fight to get it,
just like Paul teaching his dog to speak to know more about the tragedy his wife
suffered. Also that if you really love your couple you would do anything for them.

 What else would you have liked the author to do?

I would’ve liked reading a part where Lorelei was trying to help Lexy or Lorelei running
desperate around the city looking for Paul and trying to tell him (by barking or
something) what was happening on his house.

 Give your opinion on the writing style and genre as well.

The vocabulary was understandable. The writing was clear and I think this book makes
you create your own theories and you would feel like a part of the story.
