I. COURSE TITLE: Called to Meet Christ in Scripture, Church, and Sacraments

II. COURSE DESCRIPTION


T
his course will lead the students to learn the incredible richness of the mysteries of Christ,
the Church, and the Sacraments. It continues the story of God’s work of salvation in the
Old Testament by focusing on the New Testament which narrates the fulfillment of God’s
promise of a Savior in the person of Jesus. It invites us to gain greater maturity as Filipino
Catholics by learning and discovering new things about the person of Christ- his life,
mission and Paschal Mystery as presented in the Gospels and the teachings of the Church.
It challenges us to open our minds and hearts and relate to Jesus as a friend and
personal Savior. Personal faith and relationship in Christ is sustained in and by the
Church, through its teaching and celebration of the Sacraments, particularly Baptism,
Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist.

III. COURSE TOPICS

A. FIRST TRIMESTER

UNIT 1: Jesus in the New Testament


Content Standards: The students demonstrate understanding of life, teaching
and public ministry of Jesus revealing His identity and mission.
Performance Standards: The learner should be able to assume responsibility for
opening their mind and heart to the Jesus presented in the Gospels so they
can live out and celebrate their personal relationship with Him expressed
through their attentive listening to God’s word and having a personal
prayer life.

Competencies: The learner…


a. knows Jesus more clearly in the Gospels and other writings of the New Testament;
b. identifies the key concepts on the formation of the Gospels;
c. differentiates how the Gospel portrays Jesus;
d. identifies the Gospel symbols;
e. identifies and explains the meaning of the temptation of Jesus;
f. understands that the life of Jesus sets the moral standards and values in our life
today;
g. relates to the Jesus presented in the Gospels and live out one’s personal
relationship with Him;
h. discusses why the Gospels were not written at once and why the early Church
finally decided to write them;
i. realizes the truth of Jesus’ humanity by familiarizing oneself with His Jewish
background;
j. pays more attention to the proclamation of the Word of God in the Gospels, seen in
one’s attentive listening to its proclamation at Mass and reading the Bible for
personal reflection and prayer ;
k. inculcates in themselves the virtue of reading the Gospels;
l. values obedience to God to become an authentic follower of Jesus and a committed
Christian;

m. renews one’s understanding of Baptism as a sacrament of new life in Christ and as
an anointing for one’s own mission in the Church;
n. understands the dynamics of temptation to avoid sin;
o. interprets doing good to others as they become conscious that God calls them
through their parents, teachers, and other people;
p. becomes motivated to live better Christian lives, following Jesus’ example of faithful
obedience to the Father;
q. reflects their own experience in the lens of the mystery of Jesus’ life;
r. prays for commitment to grow on Christian faith in the midst of difficulties and
sufferings; and
s. explains the difference and connection between Jesus’ Baptism and Christian
Baptism.

B. SECOND TRIMESTER

UNIT 2: Jesus’ Ministry


Content Standards: The students demonstrate understanding of the relevance of
the Old Testament teachings about God’s Kingdom to the life and ministry
of Jesus
Performance Standards: The learner should respond to the call and challenge of
God’s Kingdom by living out Christ’s values on Unconditional love and
Forgiveness in their life of faith.

Competencies: The learner…


a. describes one’s particular responses to the call and task of the Kingdom through
words and deeds;
b. appreciates the value of Confirmation as it strengthens and empowers us through
the Holy Spirit to witness to God’s Kingdom;
c. nourishes their faith through constant celebration of the Liturgy by actively
participating in the celebration of the Eucharist;
d. deepens one’s understanding of the Kingdom by drawing out its meaning from
Jesus’ parables and miracles;
e. accepts and live up to the challenge of Jesus’ parables and miracles- a genuine
change of heart;
f. strengthens their resolve to genuinely become part of God’s Kingdom by cultivating
a constant attitude of conversion;
g. realizes God’s continued presence and intervention in their life in spectacular as
well as ordinary ways;
h. prays for the coming of God’s Kingdom in one’s life and society;
i. examines and understand the meaning of each Beatitude as taught and lived by
Jesus Himself in their daily life;
j. reads the events of “the last days of Jesus” and reflect on how these events reveal
more vividly and dramatically his person and mission;
k. accepts one’s “crosses” in life as definitive core of Christian discipleship;
l. becomes sorry for one’s sins and unite with Jesus’ own passion to experience
redemption;
m. knows the connection between the Sunday Eucharist and Christ’s Death and
Resurrection;
n. renews one’s appreciation of the Holy Week where Jesus’ Passion and Death and
commemorated;
o. believes the truth of the Resurrection of Jesus as the core of our Christian Faith;
p. expresses with conviction that the Jesus we relate to today is the Risen Lord;
q. justifies the evidences for the Resurrection of Jesus;
r. becomes mindful of the pattern of “death to life” in the everyday life and nature as
way of entering more deeply into the Paschal Mystery of Christ;

s. lives the virtues of hope and joy as a consequence of our Faith in the Resurrection;
and
t. explains the meaning of the Ascension: in Jesus’ life as well as in the life of
Christians today.

C. THIRD TRIMESTER

UNIT 3: Church and Sacraments


Content Standards: The students demonstrate understanding of how the
Apostle’s Creed affirms three truths about Jesus: that He is the Son of God,
that He is absolutely and completely human, and that He is One Person, the
God-Man; and know the scriptural and ecclesial images of the Church to
obtain a holistic concept of it and be able to link its mission with that of
Jesus.
Performance Standards: The learner should be able to evaluate the difference
their Christian faith has made in their life personally and collectively;
affirm their faith in God and what He did for humanity in Jesus as they pray
the Nicene Creed; accept with conviction the need for Church today in
guiding us towards a committed faith in Jesus and celebrate the
Sacraments of the Church as spiritual encounters of the Risen Christ.

Competencies: The learner…


a. knows that the Liturgical year helps them develop their relationship with Christ;
b. sees the various ways and methods the Church has proclaimed the Good News of
Jesus Christ throughout its history and be awed by the mystery of its rapid growth
and development in spite of many problems;
c. describes the problems faced by the Church in proclaiming the Good News in
various parts of its history;
d. defines the role of the Holy Spirit in the Church;
e. shows appreciation and gratitude for men and women who proclaimed the Good
News and defended the Faith even at the cost of their own lives;
f. analyzes what the Church is officially teaching about Jesus in its principal Creeds;
g. determines how the different titles and images of Jesus represent aspects of Jesus;
h. examines critically the Scriptural and ecclesial images of the Church to obtain a
holistic concept of Church;
i. links the mission of the Church with that of Jesus;
j. defines the role of the youth in the Church today;
k. becomes witness to Christ in his three-fold mission of priest, prophet, and king;
l. clarifies the basis of the mission of the Church today and name ways they can
participate in its triple mission, particularly in parish youth organizations;
m. cultivates a prayer life that is both personal and communal as a way of sustaining a
life of Christian witnessing;
n. explains what it means to be: a baptized Christian, a confirmed Catholic, Mass as
Catholic worship;
o. realizes that the Sacraments constitute the public prayer of the Church and not
merely an individual devotion or a personal act of piety; and
p. recognizes that the Sacraments of Initiation fully integrate a person into the life of
Christ and the Church.
