SECTION 12 - INSULATION
                                          Section 12
                                       INSULATION
12.1 General
The purpose of these stipulations is to define the general requirements for insulation
of mechanical auxiliary components, tanks and pipelines. Deviations from the
stipulation are allowed only by agreement between the Purchaser and the Vendor.
This standard is based on SFS standards and is applicable to equipment suppliers from
Scandinavia. Equipment suppliers from other areas may propose equivalents to what is
specified herein if what is specified is not available in their countries. The important
aspect is that the heat losses are efficiently controlled and surface temperatures are
within acceptable limits. Sufficient clearance has to be left between flange bolts and
insulation so the insulation is not damaged when servicing the equipment insulated.
The requirements for insulation materials and work are based on SFS standards, SFS
         3976E, SFS 3978E, SFS 3979E, and SFS 4967E.
12.2 Piping Insulation
The dimensioning is based on Standard SFS 3977E (see APPENDIX I). Insulating
materials have to meet the requirements presented in Standard SFS J3976E.
12.21 Economical Thermal Insulation Pipelines Indoors and outdoors
         (Insulation Class "IN")
Insulation materials shall be chosen according to APPENDIX I and insulation
thicknesses according to the table given in APPENDIX II.
Bends, shapes and small pipe repairs shall be insulated with net reinforced
         insulation matting, density 70 kg/m^ (SFS 3976E, Table 1.)
Under very corrosive conditions, covering is austenitic steel sheet AISI 316 P7 (SFS
         39676E, Table 2).
The seams of the covering shall be of beading type "A" (SFS 3968E, Figure 9). Use
of beading type "B" shall be agreed upon with the Purchaser case by case.
12.22 Pipelines, Insulation Against Condensation
         (Insulation Class "CO")
Insulation against condensation shall be used if the temperature of the surface is lower
than the ambient temperature (e.g. cold water pipelines). The aim of the insulation
against condensation is to avoid problems caused by condensation.

SECTION 12 - INSULATION
The materials of insulation against condensation are presented in APPENDIX I. The
thickness of insulation against condensation shall be 25 mm.
12.23 Pipelines Protective Insulation
        (Insulation Class "SI")
For surfaces where operation temperature is higher than 70°C insulation class "SI"
shall be used where needed for personnel protection purposes.
The insulation thicknesses for different temperatures shall be chosen from the
        table in APPENDIX III.
Insulation and covering materials are normally the same as in insulation class
        "IN".
12.24 Cold Insulation
        (Insulation Class "CI")
The design, insulation material selection and insulation work shall be carried out
based on the standard SFS 4967E. Special care must be paid to the correct vapor
barrier. The insulation thickness shall be dimensioned also against condensation
        (see APPENDIX V, Table 2).
12.25 In valve and flange insulation boxes the insulation material is rock wool lamella
mat, density 100 kg/m3. The coating material to be selected according to insulation
        class.
For the scope of the insulation see Item 4.1.1
12.3 Insulation of Tanks and Equipment
The insulation materials of tanks and equipment are presented in Appendix I and
        insulation thicknesses in Appendix IV.
In the equipment which will be walked on, rock wool slab with a loading capacity of at
least 12 kN/m2 shall be used.
The roofs of the unpressurized tanks are not required to be insulated.
12.4 Scope of Pipeline Insulation
12.41 Economical Thermal Insulation
        12.41.1 Pipelines Indoors and Outdoors
Insulation of pipes, bends, T-pieces and reducers shall be separately
defined. Valves, instruments and flanges shall not be insulated when
the temperature of the flow substance is under 140 °C( see Item 4.3.).

SECTION 12 - INSULATION
Magnetic flow meters shall not be insulated.
Valves and flanges are to be equipped with boxes with latches. The
latches to be of stainless steel.
12.42 Insulation Against Condensation
Valves and flanges shall be insulated where necessary.
12.43 Protective Insulation
All parts that can be touched shall be insulated.
12.5 Insulation Work
Insulation work shall be performed according to SFS 3978E and SFS 4967E. In
cases where the roofs of the tanks are to be insulated, Item 3 shall be followed.
12.6 Control, Measurement and Acceptance of Insulation Work
The control, measurement and acceptance shall be performed according to
         Standard SFS 3979E.
The measurements shall be recorded on a form defined by the Purchaser in
Section 6. One copy of the form shall be given to the Purchaser and another to the
         Vendor.
12.7 Guarantee
Insulation materials and thicknesses shall correspond to the given instructions and
standards. The insulation work shall be performed so that the pipelines are tight
outwards against dropping and flowing liquid, thermal expansions have been taken
into consideration, insulation and covering materials are tightly fastened and there
are no heat losses which deviate from the normal ones.
The guarantee period is two years.
Please refer to technical stipulation for thermal insulation for all further
         information on insulation.
