TITLE : PROTECTOR CALIBRATION PROCEDURE

1.0 PURPOSE
1.1 The purpose of this work instruction is to ensure that standard practices / methods of
Calibration are followed to obtain reproducible and comparable results and this
document shall be revised as and when required to meet specific requirements of the
project to become a project specific work instruction.

2.0 SCOPE
2.1 This work instruction is applicable for Calibration Laboratory to carryout calibration of
Angle Protector at Lab. temperature as per applicable international
standards/methods.

3.0 REFERENCE
3.1 Documents used:
 BS 1685 - Bevel Protractors (Mechanical & optical) - Requirements and
Test Methods
3.2 Angle Gauge
3.3 Protractor Digital
3.4 Surface Plate

4.0 DEFINITIONS
4.1 UUT: Unit Under Test
4.2 BS: British Standard

5.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
5.1 All the Operators/Technicians perfoming the Calibration shall be trained by.

7.0 GENERAL GUIDELINES

Document No. Rev. No. Issue No. Date of Issue Page No.
0 1 01-Jan-2019 3 of 6
TITLE : PROTECTOR CALIBRATION PROCEDURE

7.1 The calibration should be performed in the controlled environment only. Both the
UUT and Reference Standard equipment should be placed in controlled
environmental condition as mentioned above for at least 30 min warm up.
7.2 UUT should be inspected visually before starting the calibration. Visual inspection is
done for
 Any physical damage.
 Proper Display (in Digital Bevel Protractor)
 Proper functioning of push buttons (in Digital Bevel Protractor)
 Clarity in Magnifying Glass (For Vernier type bevel protractor)
 Rusting in the blades.
 If there is any rusting, it should be removed properly in such a fashion that
flatness of the surface should not be affected.
7.3 If it is not satisfactory, it is to be recorded in the Data Sheet.

TITLE : PROTECTOR CALIBRATION PROCEDURE

8.3 For Bevel protractors, place the angle gauge between the measuring face of the
blade and the base of the protractor and note down the reading of the protractor in
datasheet.
8.4 For Digital Angle Protractor place the angle gauge on the surface plate and put the
measuring face of the protractor on the angle gauge to get the reading.
8.5 For Mechanical type Angle Protractor place the angle gauge between the measuring
faces of the protractor and note the reading.
8.6 Similarly take the reading for other sizes of the angle gauge.
8.7 Take the reading one by one in such a fashion that it covers the whole range of the
UUT.
8.8 Compare the maximum error found with the instrument accuracy as per BS 1685 (for
Bevel Protractor) and as per manufacturer’s specification (for angle protractor) and
the accuracy statement is made accordingly in the calibration certificate.

9.0 RECORDS
9.1 Measurement/reading shall be recorded in the appropriate Check List/Formats given
the Attachment.
9.2 The test report should contain the following information as minimum.
 Client/Customer Name
 Instrument Manufacturer, Make, Model, Range, Serial No & Accuracy
 Test results
