Emotion Theories and Components

There are three components to emotion - physical, cognitive, and behavioral. Physiological refers to autonomic nervous system stimulation. Cognitive is the subjective interpretation of feelings. Behavioral is the expressed behavior in response to feelings. There are seven universal emotions - happiness, sadness, contempt, surprise, fear, disgust, and anger. The James-Lange Theory proposes stimulus causes physiological arousal leading to emotion labeling. The Cannon-Bard Theory says physiological arousal and emotion feeling occur simultaneously. The Schachter-Singer Theory requires both arousal and labeling based on environment for emotion experience. The Lazarus Theory is that appraisal precedes cognitive labeling, stimulating arousal and emotion simultaneously.

Stimulation of the autonomic nervous system
Cognitive
The subjective interpretation of the feeling being experienced
Behavioral
The behavior that is expressed in response to a feeling
Universal Emotions
Happiness, sadness, contempt, surprise, fear, disgust, and anger
James-Lange Theory
A stimulus results first in physiological arousal, which leads to a secondary response in which the
emotion is labeled
Cannon-Bard Theory
Physiological arousal and feeling of emotion occur at the same time
Schachter-Singer Theory
Both arousal and the labeling of arousal based on environment must occur in order for an emotion to be
experienced
Lazarus Theory
Appraisal precedes cognitive labeling, simultaneously stimulating both the physiological arousal and the
emotional experience itself
