Types of Stage Lights

Flood lights, scoop lights, strip lights, PARcans, and border lights are types of stage lights that can be positioned on a lighting grid according to a light plot blueprint. A light plot shows where each type of light is hung and how it should be aimed, as well as any gels or gobos used. Fresnel lights and ellipsoidal reflector spotlights (ERS) are additional types of stage lights, with fresnels providing a soft-edged spotlight beam and ERS lights offering a hard-edged focused beam.

Fresnel:  Named after the French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel who
contributed to the field of wave optics, the fresnel (pronounced fruh-nel) is
a soft-edged spotlight that allows for a variable beam spread.  The layered
concentric rings on the lens reduce the amount of glass needed to spread
the light.
