GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. What is the significance of the research article you have chosen to your Related
Learning Experience?
According to the Philippine Statistics Authority or the PSA, the number of
maternal deaths in the country for that past few years increased and the major
causes of it are complications during pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum
period. It means that maternal deaths occur not only during pregnancy but also
after delivery or postpartum period. According to this study, it is possible that a
low number of healthcare service utilization in postpartum women may
contribute to high frequency of having complications or even maternal deaths
during the postpartum period.
I believe that the role of nurses in a situation like this is very important. The
nurses should guide the postpartum mothers in the best approach as possible in
respect to the reasons why they choose to give birth at home or any other
reasons like culture practices, traditions, and financial status.
2. What are the implications of the findings to your patient care?
Low ratio of healthcare service utilization in postpartum women who deliver at
home might have higher risk of having complication
The main reason why most of postpartum women don’t utilize healthcare
services is because of financial and environmental barriers
Women who delivered at home had more abnormal symptoms related to
postpartum hypertension and infection than women who delivered at healthcare
facilities.

3. What intervention/innovation was used or implemented in the reviewed study?
As mentioned above, the main reasons why most of the mothers do not utilize
healthcare services is because of financial and environmental hindrance. As a
response, the Barangay Health Workers who are registered as volunteers at the
Health Center in the Philippines provide support to the mothers by visiting the
mothers at their home and evaluating their physical and mental conditions. They
also conducted health education about danger signs for them to be aware of any
complications that might happen to them during postpartum period.
4. Would this practice change/improve process of patient care? How about patient
outcomes?
The home visit of the Barangay Health Workers might improve the patient outcomes
because the mothers were informed about the danger signs and also the proper way
to take for their children after delivery. In addition, the home visit enabled the
Barangay Health Workers to detect for early signs of complication by doing physical
and mental evaluation.
5. Identify a nursing theory related to the article findings and discuss/describe how these
findings support/contradict your identified nursing theory.
It is important that the environment of a pregnant mother can assist the her to
deliver the baby successfully without any complications and also favorable to the
baby. Florence Nightingale’s Environmental theory supports the idea of a having a
favorable environment for the patient. Nightingale defined Nursing as “the act of
utilizing the environment of the patient to assist him/her in his/her recovery.”
Nightingale stated that nursing “ought to signify the proper use of fresh air, light,
warmth, cleanliness, quiet, and the proper selection and administration of diet – all
at the least expense of vital power to the patient”.
In relation to the article findings, it somewhat contradicts the environmental theory
because most of the mother chooses to deliver their baby at home and the
environment at home is somewhat not favorable for delivery because it is not
designed for delivering a baby. But with the help of a nurse, the environment at
home can be utilize.
